Embryo-larval toxicity test of selected anti-fungus chemicals used as prophylactic agents on the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) was conducted to assess the comparative efficacy as well as the toxicity of the different chemicals. Measured endpoints included hatching, embryo and larval survival, and larval growth. Iodine (100 mg L-1), hydrogen peroxide (250 mg L-1), malachite green (5 mg L-1) and formalin (250 mg L-1) were used as prophylactic agents. The eggs were spread on an incubating raft and continuously dipped in the treatment chemical for 15 minutes. After 48 hours, the mean hatch rate was highest in formalin-treated embryos (70%). Iodine treatment resulted in a hatch rate of 36.7%, which was slightly less than half that of the formalin treatment. Both hydrogen peroxide and malachite green resulted in 60.0% hatch rates. The results indicate that formalin-treated embryos performed significantly better than all the other chemicals. The highest percentage survival rate of 63.3% was observed in formalin at 72hph and 56.7% after 168hph. The lowest survival rate (10%) was observed in the iodine treatment group and closely followed by the group treated with malachite green (16.7%). Except for malachite green, which inhibited growth, the prophylactic treatments did not affect the growth performance of fry. This study presents evidence that can be used to support the use of formalin and hydrogen peroxide as prophylactic treatments in the early stages of C. gariepinus, although caution should be exercised due to the possibility of toxicity at higher concentrations and for longer periods of exposure.

Summary The optimum distance and duration of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for the complete inactivation of African catfish Clarias gariepinus egg nucleus was investigated in this study. The UV light was suspended above the unfertilized eggs at four distances (5, 10, 20 and 30 cm) and for five durations (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 min). Then, the irradiated eggs were activated with sperm from diploid C. gariepinus and cold shocked at 5°C for 5 min just moments before cell cleavage. Ploidy analysis was performed using karyotype chromosome counting. The results obtained suggested that the further the distance, the better the hatchability rate, however prolonged duration seemed to significantly reduced hatchability. All treatments with surviving progenies at the end of the study showed evidence of successfully diploid gynogen (2n = 56) induction at different percentages. However, the optimal protocol that gave a moderately high hatchability/survival rate and completely induced gynogens was exposure of the eggs to UV irradiation at 20 cm for 1 min. It was concluded that the distance and duration of UV irradiation affects gynogenetic induction in African catfish C. gariepinus.

AbstractThe feed as a source of energy for the growth of fish is a component of the most important costs 40-89% and the quality should be good. The solution is through research. Research in the form of meal cassava leaves (Monihot utilissima) parents as a source of alternative protein substitute for fish meal in feed formulation catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The design used Complete Random Design with 4 treatments and 3 repetitions. The results showed that for the growth and the survival between treatments were not significant (P <0.5), meaning that all treatments were no differences can be categorized and feed ingredients of flour cassava leaves can replace most of the presence of meal fish  in fish feed formulas African catfish. Growth of the best catfish are on treatment A (55% meal cassava leaf: 00% fish meal) with daily growth of 8.27 grams was 2.61% and the B (40%% meal cassava leaves: 15% meal fish) 5.28 gram with daily growth is 1.86%, followed by C (15%%  meal cassava leaves: 15% meal fish ) 1:51% and D (0% meal cassava leaves : 55% meal fish ) 1:33%. Catfish survival rate was not significant (P <0.5), and relatively equally well A (96.17%), B (94.77) and C (95.92) and the best in treatment for D (96.37 ). As users are advised to wear formulations in treatment B (40% meal fish and 15%  meal cassava leaves old). Keywords: Catfish, Ffeed, Meal fish, Meal cassava leaves AbstrakPakan sebagai sumber energi bagi pertumbuhan ikan  merupakan komponen biaya yang paling besar 40-89%  dan kualitasnya harus baik. Solusinya melalui penelitian. Penelitian berupa tepung daun  singkong (Monihot utilissima) tua sebagai sumber protein alternatif penganti tepung ikan dalam formulasi pakan ikan lele (Clarias gariepinus). Rancangan digunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap dengan 4 perlakuan dan 3 kali ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa untuk pertumbuhan dan kelulusan hidup antar perlakuan tidak signifikan (P < 0,5), artinya semua perlakuan  tidak ada perbedaan dan dapat dikatagorikan bahan pakan dari tepung daun singkong dapat mengantikan sebagian keberadaan tepung ikan dalam formula pakan ikan lele dumbo. Pertumbuhan ikan lele terbaik terdapat pada perlakuan A (55% tepung daun singkong : 00% tepung ikan) 8,27 gram dengan pertumbuhan harian adalah 2.61% dan  pada B (40%  % tepung daun singkong : 15% tepung ikan) 5,28 gram dengan pertumbuhan harian adalah 1.86%, diikuti C (15% % tepung daun singkong :15% tepung ikan) 1.51% dan D (0 % tepung daun singkong : 55% tepung ikan) 1.33%. Tingkat kelangsungan hidup ikan lele tidak signifikan (P < 0,5), dan  relatif sama baiknya A (96,17%), B (94,77) dan C (95,92) dan terbaik pada perlakuan untuk D (96,37). Sebagai pengguna disarankan memakai formulasi pada perlakuan B (40% Tepung ikan dan 15% tepung daun singkong tua). Kata kunci: Ikan lele, Pakan, Tepung ikan, Tepung  Daun Singkong Tua

Aims: To examine the dietary effects of Prunus amygdalus dulcis seed meal on the sperm quality of male African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Place and Duration of Study: The experiment was carried out at the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology Teaching and Research Farm, The Federal University of Technology, Akure for a period of 70 days. Methodology: Five diets with crude protein of 40% were formulated with different inclusion levels of P. amygdalus dulcis seed powder. D1 (control) has 0 g of the powder, while D2, D3, D4 and D5 has 5, 10, 15 and 20 g of the P. amygdalus dulcis seed powder in 100 g of feed respectively. A total of 45 C. gariepinus were randomly distributed into 15 concrete tanks (2×2×1.5 m) at stocking density of 3 fish per tank and constant water level of 1 m was maintained in the experimental tanks. The fish were fed at 3% of body weight twice a day between 08.00-09.00 and 16.00-17.00 hours for a period of 70 days. At the end of the 70-day experiment, gonadosomatic index and reproductive indices such as milt volume, motility duration, spermatozoa count, percentage motility, percentage fertilization, percentage hatchability and percentage survival of fry were determined. The qualities of the milt were assessed by aid of microscope and by fertility tests. Histological examination of the testes of fish fed each of the diets was also carried out. Results: Fish fed experimental diets showed significantly improved gonado-somatic index and reproductive indices over the control treatment. Higher gonado-somatic index and reproductive indices were recorded for the fish fed diet of 20 g/kg P. amygdalus dulcis seed powder compared to other experimental diets. Conclusion: The results indicated that supplementing diets with P. amygdalus dulcis seed powder enhanced growth and improved gonadosomatic index, and reproductive indices of male C. gariepinus broodstocks which can be exploited in fish seeds production.

Background The objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth performance and feed utilization of African catfish Clarias gariepinus fed a commercial diet and reared in the biofloc system enhanced with probiotic. Methods The treatment was the frequency of probiotic application into the cultured system, namely, 5-day interval, 10-day interval, and 15-day interval for 60 days of experiment. Biofloc culture was grown in an experiment tank (vol. 2000 L) by mixing the probiotic (Bacillus sp.) 10 mL and molasses 200 mL per liter of water.  The fish was stocked into the biofloc system 7 days after cultured at stocking density of 1000 fish tank-1.  The fish was fed a commercial diet that contains 38% crude protein, twice a day at satiation. The application of probiotic was reperformed after 5 days, 10 days, and 15 days after stocking. Results The study showed that the growth performance, survival, and feed utilization of African catfish were higher in the treatment at 5-day intervals over 60 days. The ANOVA test showed that the application frequency of probiotic into biofloc system of cultured media had the significant effect on the growth performance, survival rate, and feed utilization of African catfish. Conclusion The best growth performance and feed utilization were  found at the application of probiotic into biofloc system at 5-day intervals over 60 days.

Aquaponics is a technology that combines the cultivation of vegetable production and fish farming. The aquaponics technology also to fertilization to give nutrients to the plant to support of survival. In facts, fertilization done to plants is located on land. Fertilizing the plants that live in the waters are still very rare, because the waters as a growing medium that is considered to always provide sufficient nutrients for plant growth. In this research, using biofertilizer Euchema cottonii of seaweed. The advantages of biofertilizer seaweed is to have the content of macro and micro nutrients are complete. It also contains substances hyper Grow (PGR) plant (auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, abisat acid and ethylene).In this research to determine the effect of biofertilizer products of seaweed (E. cottonii) commercial on the growth of dumbo catfish (C. gariepinus) and pakcoy mustard (B. rapa L) on aquaponics system. The design of experiments in this research using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment used is fertilizer "AB mix®" 1% (A), without fertilizer (B) and the provision of products biofertilizer seaweed (E. cottonii) commercial 0,16% (C), 0,18% (D) and 0,20% (E). The main parameters measured were heavy growth of biomass, plant height pakcoy mustard (B. rapa L), growth SGR, length and survival rate of fish of dumbo catfish (C. gariepinus).The results showed that the dose of different commercial product biofertilizer seaweed (E. cottonii) gives a significantly different effect on the height growth of pakcoy mustard (B. rapa L) and the survival rate of dumbo catfish (C. gariepinus). The optimal dosage of commercial seaweed (E. cottonii) biofertilizer product in increasing the growth of pakcoy mustard (B. rapa L.) and African catfish (C. gariepinus) in the aquaponic system, namely treatment E at a dose of 0.20%.

This study aimed to determine the effect of the use of EM-4 probiotics (effective microorganisms-4) in feed on different stockings in increasing the survival rate and growth of African catfish. This research was conducted by the Faculty of Fisheries Laboratory of the Dharmawangsa University Medan from September to October 2019. The design used in this study was a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments 3 replications. The treatment consists of the different amount of stocking density (P1: 50 fish / 48 liters of water), (P2: 65 fish / 48 liters of water), (P3: 80 fish / 48 liters of water) and (P4: 95 fish / 48 liters of water). The observation result Data is analyzed by variance analysis (ANAVA) after meeting the requirements, Subsequently conducted a variety of error test homogenized and use a chi-squared spread with the formula Steel and Torries (2003). The results showed that the different amount of stocking density affected the growth and graduation of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) seeds. The optimal density of stocking on the growth and graduation of live African catfish is the density of 50 fish/ 48 liters of water, with an average survival rate of 90.66%, the average growth of absolute weight  19.10 grams and average average growth length 9 cm
