In the present era, the global need for food is increasing rapidly; nanomaterials are a useful tool for improving crop production and yield. The application of nanomaterials can improve plant growth parameters. Biotic stress is induced by many microbes in crops and causes disease and high yield loss. Every year, approximately 20–40% of crop yield is lost due to plant diseases caused by various pests and pathogens. Current plant disease or biotic stress management mainly relies on toxic fungicides and pesticides that are potentially harmful to the environment. Nanotechnology emerged as an alternative for the sustainable and eco-friendly management of biotic stress induced by pests and pathogens on crops. In this review article, we assess the role and impact of different nanoparticles in plant disease management, and this review explores the direction in which nanoparticles can be utilized for improving plant growth and crop yield.

Currently, the expansion of research to find new efficient and environmentally friendly plant growth regulators is an urgent task of agricultural biotechnology. One of the main requirements of the modern development of crop production using technologies for the use of new plant growth regulators is, along with the environmental friendliness of new drugs, both at the application stage for foliar feeding of plants and improving the quality of the final product. One of the new drugs that meet these requirements is a complex preparation of 1-ethoxysilatrane with crezacin. The work shows the high efficiency of the use of the new apple growth regulator in the processing of apple leaves. As a result of the studies, a synergism of the joint action of 1-ethoxysilatrane and crezacin as part of a complex preparation was revealed during foliar treatment of apple leaves of 3-4 phases and the beginning of flowering by spraying the drug in doses of 15 g/ha. The total increase in apple harvest during foliar treatment of tree leaves was 8.1% or 7.0 t/ha compared with the control. An increase in the quality indicators of gardening products was revealed when using the drug 1-ethoxysilatran with krezacin in terms of the content of dry substances, total sugar, vitamin C and pectin in the fruits. The content in the fruits of nitrates during foliar treatment with a new preparation of tree leaves is reduced by 17.9% compared with the control. The content in the fruits of apples of nitrates during foliar treatment with a new preparation of tree leaves decreases by 17.9%, the lead content by 44% compared with the control.

Plant growth regulators are the naturally extracted or synthesised compounds which are used in smaller quantity to modify the hormonal activity in agricultural and horticultural crops. Though there effect was not totally revealed there was some significant works carried out to know the effect of growth regulators on agronomic crops they are now using in wide range of crops to alter different parameters such as plant height, canopy development, effective branching, flower imitation and improving yield. They also play a key role in dryland farming as some of the plant growth regulators are used in stress tolerance of the crops. Few research works are carried to know the effect of major plant growth regulators on cereals and pulses. The plant growth regulators like auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins and ethephon are the majorly used plant growth regulators in cereals and pulses to obtain optimum plant growth and to improve the yields.

Salinity is one of the most serious factors limiting plant growth which can provoke significant losses in agricultural crop production, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas. This study aimed to investigate whether melatonin (MT; 0.05 and 0.1 mM), which has pleiotropic roles, has a better effect than glycine betaine (GB; 10 and 50 mM) on providing salt tolerance in a woody plant Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen. Also, the alternative oxidase activity (AOX) in plant subjected to MT or GB under salinity (150 and 250 mM) was evaluated given that the effect of exogenous MT or GB on AOX has not been reported yet. The results showed that the exogenous application of GB on the seedlings of D. odorifera increased the plant growth parameters, relative water content, total of chlorophyll content, and carotenoid content compared with well-watered and MT treatments. Under severe salinity, the seedlings subjected to GB showed, a significant enhancement in water use efficiency, transpiration, and net photosynthetic rate regardless to MT-treated seedlings. The levels of proline and soluble sugar in the seedlings treated with MT or GB decreased significantly under mild and severe salinity correlated with those in salt-stressed seedlings. Furthermore, GB-treated plants exhibited a significant inhibition of malondialdehyde content compared with MT-treated plants. The concentration of thiols and phenolic compounds were significantly enhanced in the leaves of seedlings treated with MT compared with those treated with GB. Under salt stress condition, GB scavenged significantly higher levels of hydrogen peroxide than MT; while under severe salinity, plants subjected to MT showed better scavenging ability for hydroxyl radicals compared with GB-treated seedlings. The results demonstrated also an enhancement of the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase, and AOX activities in seedlings treated with GB or MT compared with salt-stressed plants. The catalase activity (CAT) was increased by 0.05 mM MT and 0.1 mM GB under mild salinity. Meanwhile, the AOX activity under severe salinity was enhanced only by GB 50 mM. The findings of this study suggested that GB-treated seedlings possessed a better salt tolerance in comparison with MT-treated seedlings.

Plant growth stimulators (growth regulators + biostimulants; PGS) are chemical substances (organic/inorganic), helpful in plant growth and development. These are not considered as the replacement of fertilizers but can help in improved crop and soil quality. Both compounds can amplify the root biomass, nutrients translocation, enzymatic activities, crop yield, physiology, and nutrient uptake. Biostimulants are rich in minerals, vitamins, plant hormones, oligosaccharides, and amino acids. These compounds have a serious role to improve soil health, fertility, sorption, and desorption of nutrients. Hence, have a vital character in nutrients cycling, abiotic stress control, heavy metals bioavailability, and greenhouse gaseous emission. This chapter focuses on the discussions about the influence of plant growth regulators and biostimulants in crop production, soil health, heavy metal cycling, greenhouse gases emission with environmental sustainability. Whereas, the impact of biostimulants on greenhouse gases is a research gap.

The experiments of vacuum-asisted seed invigoration was conducted in Bogor, Indonesia, in order to increase crop production of iles-iles (Amorphophallus muelleri). This research was conducted in two series of experiments. The first experiment was conducted to determine the level of vacuum. The research was using 5 treatments i.e., control 1 (soaked in the water), control 2 (soaked in a solution of 2% N), control 3 (vacuum in water media), vacuum in solution containing 2% N, 4% N, 2% NPK (2:1:1), 4% NPK, vacuum in solution of supplementary liquid fertilizer (PPC) 2% and 4% PPC. The results of of the first experiment showed that the vacuum treatment increased the germination of iles-iles, the best vacuum pressure was -250mmHg. In the second experiment, the vacuum in a solution 4% PPC generated the highest growth followed by vacuum in 2% solution of NPK and 4% of PPC. In addition, the vacuum in the nutrient solution over 4% lead to inhibition of growth. The implication of this study is that the provision of nutrients in the seeds can increase plant growth of iles-iles. Vacuum treatment can enhance the effectiveness of invigoration. Keywords : NPK, PPC, seed treatment, starter solution, vacuum
