To evaluate the effect of Ipomea batatas tuber extract (IBTE) on blood lipid profile and atherogenic index in plasma (AIP) of dyslipidemia rats. First, IBTE was extracted by methanol. Fat-rich diets was given for 30 days to induce dyslipidemia in rats. Then, IBTE was given to dyslipidemia rats for 21 days. Lipid profiles in the form of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and AIP in rats were measured and analyzed. The results showed that administration of IBTE 150, 300 and 600mg/kg BW was able to improve the blood lipid profile of dyslipidemia rats, where there was a decrease in levels of TC, TG and LDL-C, and an increase in HDL-C levels. In line with this, the AIP value has also decreased. The conclusion was IBTE have affect to improve the blood lipid profile of dyslipidemia rats and the AIP.

Aim.To study the associations between blood lipid profile and blood glucose levels in men with coronary heart disease (CHD), stable effort angina (SEA), metabolic syndrome (MS), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2).Material and methods.The study included 82 men (mean age 50,5±0,9 years) with CHD, Functional Class I–III SEA, MS, and DM-2. The following lipid profile parameters were assessed: total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL–CH), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL–CH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–CH), atherogenic index (AI), and triglyceride index (TGI), together with fasting blood glucose.Results.There were positive (direct) associations between higher levels (>90th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose, as well as between lower levels (≤10th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose. At the same time, there were negative (inverse) associations between lower lipid levels (≤10th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and higher glucose levels (>90th percentile), as well as between higher lipid levels (>90th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and lower glucose levels (≤10th percentile).Conclusion.Dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia demonstrate synergetic proatherogenic effects in patients with CHD, SEA, MS, and DM-2, as suggested by significant heterogeneous (direct and inverse) associations between lipid profile parameters and fasting blood glucose. The results obtained provide an opportunity for the assessment of risk levels, prognosis, and need for pharmacological prevention and treatment in patients with combined cardiovascular pathology.

Objectives A long-term abnormal blood lipid profile increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A probable protective role may be played by the Mediterranean diet. The aim of this study was to assess prevalence of dyslipidaemia, assess blood lipid status and treatment and examine the association between blood lipids, dyslipidaemia and Mediterranean diet. Methods Data were from the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS). Data from 3775 adults (40.8% males) were obtained by trained personnel and disease status was categorized according to the International Classification of Diseases codes (10th version). Blood lipid measurements were obtained from a subsample ( N = 1080, mean age 40.1 years; 37.8% male). The Mediterranean diet score (MedDiet score) was calculated from 24-h recalls. The relationships between higher MedDiet score (>23), lipid levels and status were examined using linearized multiple linear and logistic regressions, respectively. Results In total, 20.7% of the population was dyslipidaemic, with 59.0% (no sex differences) receiving treatment, and 46.6% of the treated having a normal lipid profile. Lipid status awareness was 35.5% (64.5% unaware). Males aged 19–39 had higher total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels than females (in mg/dl; p for all <0.05); these were significantly higher in overweight and obese individuals in all age groups, except high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ( p for all <0.001). Higher MedDiet score was associated with significantly lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the pooled sample (−6.39 mg/dl; 95% confidence interval (CI): −12.60, 0.17), in all males (−10.61 mg/dl; 95% CI: −19.89, −1.34) and in overweight and obese males (−15.6 mg/dl; 95% CI: −29.25, –1.94). Conclusion This study underlines the abnormal lipid profile in the young, mostly male, population who are highly unaware and under-treated.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of virgin coconut oil (VCO) and hydrolyzed VCO (HVCO) on lipid profile and liver enzymes in dyslipidemic rats.Methods: VCO was hydrolyzed using lipase from Rhizomucor miehei (active on sn-1,3 position). Thirty male rats (150–200 g) were induced with 2 ml/kg body weight (BW) egg yolk and lard oil twice a day for 30 days. Rats were divided into six groups which were given with sodium carboxymethylcellulose 0.5%, atorvastatin, VCO (4 and 6 ml/kg BW), and HVCO (4 and 6 ml/kg BW). Lipid profile including total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), and liver enzymes including serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) were measured after 14 days of treatment.Results: The results of this study show that VCO and HVCO improve lipid profile (decrease in TC, TG, LDL-C, and VLDL-C, but increase in HDL-C). VCO and HVCO also lower atherogenic index, TC/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, SGOT, and SGPT. Result shows that HVCO improves lipid profile and liver enzymes better than VCO does.Conclusion: VCO and HVCO improve lipid profile in dyslipidemic rats, not atherogenic, and not toxic to the liver. HVCO causes better lipid profile improvement, especially with 6 ml/kg BW dosage.

Abstract Background Exposure to arsenic orchestrates a myriad of noxious health effects, including cancer. Different parts of Irvingia gabonensis are used as herbal remedies in traditional medicine. In this study, the comparative effects of the ethanol leaf (ELEIG) and stem bark extracts (ESEIG) of Irvingia gabonensis on sodium arsenite (SA)-induced lipid profile disturbances in Wistar rats were investigated. Methods Fifty five Wistar rats weighing between 100 g and 179 g were distributed into eleven groups (n=5). Group 1 (control) received feed and water ad libitum. Group 2 received SA at a dose of 4.1 mg/kg body weight (kgbw) for 14 days. Groups 3–11 were treated with the extracts with or without SA. Treatment was done by oral intubation for 14 days. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TAG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), total lipids (TL) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were used to determine the lipid profile effects of the extracts. Results Exposure to SA caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in all assayed parameters, relative to control. Post-treatment and simultaneous treatment with ELEIG and ESEIG mitigated the effects of SA. In addition, ELEIG alone at various doses produced results comparable with control values. However, ESEIG alone caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in all assayed parameters, relative to control. Conclusion These results show that ELEIG and ESEIG ameliorate SA-induced lipid profile disturbances in Wistar rats. However, long-term administration of ESEIG alone may be discouraged.

Objective.Many studies have highlighted the hypolipidemic action of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). We investigated the effect of HCQ on the lipid profile of patients with Sjögren syndrome (SS).Methods.The present retrospective observational study included 71 female patients with SS treated with HCQ. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), and atherogenic index (TC/HDL) were measured at baseline, after 6 months, and 1, 3, and 5 years after initiation of HCQ treatment. Analysis to investigate changes over time was performed in the entire patient group and in the separate subgroups: those receiving (21 patients) and those not receiving (50 patients) hypolipidemic treatment.Results.For the entire group of patients a statistically significant decrease in TC was noted (levels before treatment 220 ± 41 mg/dl, and at 5 yrs 206 ± 32 mg/dl, p = 0.006). A statistically significant difference was observed in the levels of HDL (57 ± 14 mg/dl vs 67 ± 17 mg/dl, p < 0.001) and in atherogenic index (4.0 ± 1.3 vs 3.3 ± 0.9, p < 0.001). Patients not receiving a hypolipidemic agent during the same period demonstrated a decrease in TC (214 ± 40 mg/dl vs 208 ± 34 mg/dl, p = 0.049), an increase in HDL levels (55 ± 15 mg/dl vs 67 ± 18 mg/dl, p < 0.001), and a decrease in atherogenic index (4.0 ± 1.4 vs 3.3 ± 0.9, p < 0.001). In the subgroup of patients receiving hypolipidemic treatment, the respective changes in their lipid profile were not significant in the first years but became significant in the long term.Conclusion.Use of HCQ in patients with SS was related to a statistically significant decrease in TC, an increase in HDL, and improvement in the atherogenic index.

Statin side effects are not a rare occurrence, in particular dyspeptic disorders, insomnia, headache, skin erythema, rash are often noted. All of this determines scientists to find new effective and low-toxic hypolipidemic agents. Various natural and synthetic xanthine derivatives have been recognized as therapeutically potential compounds and reported to control various diseases. Therefore, the study of new xanthine derivatives and their hypolipidemic effects, which would have a significant therapeutic effect with minimal side effects, is relevant. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of 7-β-hydroxy-γ-aryloxypropylxanthinyl-8-thioalkanic acid derivatives on lipidogram parameters in experimental laboratory rats. Materials and methods. The objects of the study were 7-β-hydroxy-γ-aryloxypropylxanthinyl-8-thioalkanic acid derivatives. The experiments were performed in white laboratory Wistar rats weighing 180–220 g. Experimental modeling of hyperlipidemia – tween model: intraperitoneal administration of tween-80 at a dose of 200 mg/100 g body weight. The test compounds were administered orally, simultaneously with tween, at a dose of 1/10 of LD50 (previously calculated by Prozorovsky express method) for 6 days. The following indicators of lipidogram were determined: total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), triglycerides (TG) and atherogenic index of plasma: TC – HDL cholesterol / HDL cholesterol. The experiments were carried out with respect to Bioethical rules and norms. Results. The studies have shown data on the hypolipidemic activity of 7-β-hydroxy-γ-aryloxypropylxanthinyl-8-thioalkane acid derivatives. According to the conditional efficiency index Ʃ, which included the overall percentage of the following indicators – total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, the leading compounds were 2439 (87.47 %), 6047 (82.30 %). The reference drug atorvastatin had a value of 82.98 %. Conclusions. The major compound was 2439 identified among all compared to the control group. The prospect of further research is a more detailed study on the ability of xanthine derivatives to exhibit hypolipidemic effects and to influence oxidative stress in various hyperlipidemic models.

Background: Gallbladder disease is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases. Various studies have shown association between gallstone and alteration in serum lipids. The objective of this study was to evaluate histological patterns of cholecystectomy specimens and compare serum lipid profile of gallstone patients with controls.Methods: This study was conducted over a period of two years (April 2016 to April 2018). Records of 287 specimens who underwent cholecystectomy were analysed in which gallstones were found only in 186 patients. Out of 186 patients with gallstones, records of serum lipid profile were available in 32 patients which were compared with 32 control of similar age. Independent t- test was used to compare the data between cases and control.Results: Out of 287 cases, 68 were male and 219 were female with male to female ratio of 1:3.2. The predominant histopathological lesion was chronic cholecystitis (73.17%). Malignancy was observed in 0.7% cases. Serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were found to be higher and statistically significant in patients with gallstone compared to controls (p value 0.024, <0.001and 0.016 respectively). Serum High density lipoprotein cholesterol was lower in gallstone patient than in control but not statistically significant (p value 0.23).Conclusions: Chronic cholecystitis was the most common histopathological lesion. Serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol level were elevated and statistically significant in patients with gallstone.

Two lactobacilli strains; Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 20079 and Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 20179 and two bifidobacteria strains; Bifidobacterium bifidum GSGG 5286 and Bifidobacterium longum ATCC 15707 were studied their abilities to reduce the cholesterol content in vitro. It was investigated that the in vivo cholesterol-lowering effect of L. plantarum ATCC 20179, B. bifidum GSGG 5286 and mixture of both probiotics (L. plantarum ATCC20179 and B. bifidum GSGG5286) on hyperlipidaemic rats for 8 weeks. All lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains assimilate the cholesterol content in laboratory media. It was observed the highest assimilation of cholesterol was in L. plantarum ATCC 20179 and B. bifidum GSGG 5286 strains. In vivo, L. plantarum ATCC 20179  group was more effective in improving serum lipid profile levels [total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein – cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein – cholesterol                   (HDL-C), very low density lipoprotein – cholesterol (VLDL-C) and Atherogenic Index (AI)],                      liver enzyme activities (ALT, AST and ALP),  malonaldehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and total antioxidants capacity (TAC) levels than mixed-organisms and B. bifidum groups, respectively of hyperlipidaemic rats. It was concluded that L. plantarum ATCC 20179 showed more                     favourable results than B. bifidum GSGG 5286 in relation to cardiovascular risk factors in hyperlipidaemic rats.

This study was conducted with 180 female Swiss albino mice to examine the effects of supplementing broiler fat in the diets of mice on blood lipid profile. Twenty one days old mice were collected from ICDDRB, Mohakhali, Dhaka. They were randomly distributed in four groups having three replications each. Each replicate group had 15 mice. Results revealed that supplementation of broiler fat in mice diet significantly changed (p<0.05) triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) among groups. The control group (T0) had the highest level of cholesterol and LDL. Cholesterol, TG and LDL markedly increased (p<0.05) in all dietary treatment groups, while high density lipoprotein (HDL) significantly (p<0.01) decreased after supplementation of experimental diets. It was concluded that all the dietary treatments in general increased blood cholesterol, TG and LDL in mice fed broiler fat with different oil supplements. However, the soybean and palm oil group was comparatively better than other groups in respect of cholesterol, HDL and LDL at the blood lipid profile of mice. AbstractEvaluation of lipid profile in children and adolescents is important for early diagnosis of dyslipidemias. Physiological changes might be observed in the concentration of the lipid profile components, according to the stage of sexual maturation.To evaluate the variation in lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in boys during puberty.The sample consisted of 570 male adolescents with ages between 10 and 17 years. Weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) were assessed. Total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) were determined by the enzymatic method, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was calculated. Puberty was classified according to Tanner references. The percentile criterion was adopted for the distribution and identification of lipoprotein levels. The analysis of variance and description tests with p<0.05 was applied.Participants had similar BMILipid and lipoprotein concentrations tend to undergo changes during puberty in boys. The use of percentile values can be very useful to track variations in lipid and lipoprotein levels during the maturation process.
