This study evaluated the modulation of the ventilatory frequency of Nile tilapia sedated with essential oil of Ocimum basilicum and eugenol. The fish were exposed to the following treatments: control (water only); ethanol 200 µl L-1 (concentration used to dilute the anesthetic); eugenol 10 µl L-1 and 20 µl L-1; essential oil of O. basilicum at the concentration of 10 µl L-1 and 20 µl L-1. After 90 minutes of exposure to the treatments, water quality, mortality and respiratory rate were determined. The concentration of 20 µl L-1 of the essential oil of O. basilicum and eugenol showed a sedative effect and reduced the excretion of metabolic ammonia in Nile tilapia. There was no mortality in fish exposed to the treatments. The respiratory rate did not differ between the different treatments. It is concluded that the concentration of 20 µl L-1 of the essential oil of O. basilicum and eugenol shows the best result in the inducing sedative effect for Nile tilapia, and that the essential oil of O. basilicum and eugenol in the concentrations of 10 µl L-1 and 20 µl L-1 in an exposure period up to 90 minutes do not alter the ventilatory frequency of Nile tilapia.

Abstract The objective of current study was to determine the chemical constituents and fumigant toxicity of essential oil isolated by hydro-distillation from dry fruit of bitter fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Miller). The chemical composition of the essential oil was assessed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Constituents of the oil were determined as α-pinene (1.6%) and limonene (3.3%), fenchone (27.3%), estragol (3.9%), and (E)-anethole (61.1%). The fumigant toxicity of the essential oil was tested on larvae of the stored product insect Trogoderma granarium Everts. The mortality of larvae was tested at different concentrations ranging from 31.2 to 531.2 μl/l air and at different exposure times (24 and 48 h). Probit analysis showed that LC50 and LC90 following a 48 h-exposure period for essential oil were 38.4 and 84.6 μl/l, respectively. These results showed that the essential oil from F. vulgare may be applicable to the management of populations of stored-product insects.

The present work aimed at determining the effects of the association between the periphyton-based system with the bioflocs-based system in the intensive culture of juvenile Nile tilapia (1.56 ± 0.07 g; 72 fish m-3), on variables of water quality, growth performance and effluent quality after 10 weeks. The experiment was arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial randomized block design with four treatments and five repetitions each. The factors tested were the following: ‘underwater structure’ (absence and presence) and ‘adjustment of the C: N ratio of water’ (no and yes). The final fish body weight, specific growth rate and yield were higher (p < 0.05) in the C: N-adjusted tanks. The presence of submerged structures in the tanks had no significant influence on those same variables. It was concluded that the periphyton-based system is not indicated for intensive farming of Nile tilapia, in which there is a high allowance of artificial feed to fish.
