Background Over 600 RCTs have demonstrated the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for children and young people’s mental health, but little is known about the long-term outcomes. This systematic review sought to establish whether the effects of selective and indicated interventions were sustained at 12 months. Method We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis focusing on studies reporting medium term outcomes (12 months after end of intervention). Findings We identified 138 trials with 12-month follow-up data, yielding 165 comparisons, 99 of which also reported outcomes at end of intervention, yielding 117 comparisons. We found evidence of effect relative to control at end of intervention (K = 115, g = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.30–0.47 I2 = 84.19%, N = 13,982) which was maintained at 12 months (K = 165, g = 0.31, CI: 0.25–0.37, I2 = 77.35%, N = 25,652) across a range of diagnostic groups. We explored the impact of potential moderators on outcome, including modality, format and intensity of intervention, selective or indicated intervention, site of delivery, professional/para-professional and fidelity of delivery. We assessed both risk of study bias and publication bias. Conclusions Psychosocial interventions provided in a range of settings by professionals and paraprofessionals can deliver lasting benefits. High levels of heterogeneity, moderate to high risk of bias for most studies and evidence of publication bias require caution in interpreting the results. Lack of studies in diagnostic groups such as ADHD and self-harm limit the conclusions that can be drawn. Programmes that increase such interventions’ availability are justified by the benefits to children and young people and the decreased likelihood of disorder in adulthood.

Objectives: This study aims to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature on the long-term effects of interventions addressing children’s and adolescents’ mental health literacy and/or stigmatizing attitudes.Methods: Articles in English or German published between January 1997 and May 2020 were retrieved from five databases, leading to a total of 4,375 original articles identified.Results: 25 studies were included after applying exclusion criteria, 13 of which were eligible for meta-analysis. The overall average of the follow-up period was about 5 months. Long-term improvements were sustained for mental health literacy, d = 0.48, 95% CI = (0.34, 0.62), as well as for stigmatizing attitudes, d = 0.30, 95% CI = (0.24, 0.36), and social distance, d = 0.16, 95% CI = (0.03, 0.29). The combination of educational and contact components within interventions led to worse results for mental health literacy, but not stigmatizing attitudes or social distance.Conclusion: Interventions targeting children and adolescents generally have a brief follow-up period of an average of 5 months. They show a stable improvement in mental health literacy, but are to a lesser degree able to destigmatize mental illness or improve social distance.

Background: The COVID‑19 pandemic and associated public health measures have disrupted the lives of people around the world. It is already evident that the direct and indirect psychological and social effects of the COVID‑19 pandemic are insidious and affect the mental health of young children and adolescents now and will in the future. The aim and objectives of this knowledge-synthesis study were to identify the impact of the pandemic on children’s and adolescent’s mental health and to evaluate the effectiveness of different interventions employed during previous and the current pandemic to promote children’s and adolescents’ mental health. Methodology: We conducted the systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and included experimental randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials, observational studies, and qualitative studies. Results: Of the 5828 articles that we retrieved, 18 articles met the inclusion criteria. We thematically analyzed them and put the major findings under the thematic areas of impact of the pandemic on children’s and adolescents’ mental health. These studies reported that pandemics cause stress, worry, helplessness, and social and risky behavioral problems among children and adolescents (e.g., substance abuse, suicide, relationship problems, academic issues, and absenteeism from work). Interventions such as art-based programs, support services, and clinician-led mental health and psychosocial services effectively decrease mental health issues among children and adolescents. Conclusion: Children and adolescents are more likely to experience high rates of depression and anxiety during and after a pandemic. It is critical that future researchers explore effective mental health strategies that are tailored to the needs of children and adolescents. Explorations of effective channels regarding the development and delivery of evidenced-based, age-appropriate services are vital to lessen the effects and improve long-term capacities for mental health services for children and adolescents. Key Practitioner Message: The COVID-19 pandemic’s physical restrictions and social distancing measures have affected each and every domain of life. Although the number of children and adolescents affected by the disease is small, the disease and the containment measures such as social distancing, school closure, and isolation have negatively impacted the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents. The impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of children and adolescents is of great concern. Anxiety, depression, disturbances in sleep and appetite, as well as impairment in social interactions are the most common presentations. It has been indicated that compared to adults, this pandemic may continue to have increased long term adverse consequences on children’s and adolescents’ mental health. As the pandemic continues, it is important to monitor the impact on children’s and adolescents’ mental health status and how to help them to improve their mental health outcomes in the time of the current or future pandemics.

Bullying was a type of action which performed repeatedly, from time to time which involved particular group or individual who had more power than the victim. This systematic review was aimed to identify the impacts of bullying to the mental health of adolescent. This systematic review was initiated from identifying scientific articles that have been published between 2015-2019 on five databases as PubMed, Clinical Key, Science Direct, ProQuest, and Springer Link. The search involved use of terms as effects, bullying, adolescent and mental health. Overall, from the result of searching, this research collected 26 articles which fitted to the inclusion criteria. The result of 26 articles were overall in quantitative research design. The long-term impact of bullying for the victim was a problem of mental health. The mental health problem which found on the victim of bullying as stress, depression and anxiety, idea of suicide, low self-esteem, withdrawal from social contact, loneliness and decrease of self-confidence. The findings showed that bullying could affect a long-term effect since the adolescent up to adult period.

AbstractIntroductionThe objective of this systematic review was to identify, report and critically appraise studies that have reported health outcomes from use of ENDS.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review of all published literature on the health impact of ENDS products from 1st January 2015 until February 1, 2020, following the PRISMA protocol, including across the databases, PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Google Scholar. Medical subject headings were used in the execution of PubMed searches.A category for the level of evidence was assigned blindly using the Centres for Evidence Based Medicine framework. A similar approach was adopted to evaluate methodological quality of each study utilizing the National Institutes for Health (NIH) Quality Assessment Tools.ResultsThe database search identified 755 studies and a further 265 were identified from other sources and reference reviews of which 37 studies met the eligibility criteria.The majority of studies were of low strength for levels of evidence including 24 (65%) cross-sectional, 1(2.7%) case-control and six (16%) case studies. There were four (11%) cohort studies and only one (2.7%) RCT. There was only one (2.7%) meta-analysis or pooled study of observational study designs; there were no pooled results of randomized controlled trials. Of 37 studies, eight (22%) studies reported on benefits, two (2%) studies were neutral, reporting on both harm and benefits, the remaining 27 (73%) reported only on harms. The quality ratings were poor (20, 54%), fair (9, 24%) and good (8, 22%).In our review ENDS use has not been shown to be causative for any CVD outcomes and has been shown to be beneficial for hypertensive patients. Switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes resulted in reduced exacerbations of COPD, with no evidence of long-term deterioration in lung function. There was a suggestion of short-term reductions in respiratory function in asthmatics, but no increased risk of asthma in ENDS users who were never smokers. Mental Health, cancer and mortality have not been adequately studied to form any consensus with regards to health outcomes from ENDS use.ConclusionOur review suggests that the majority of studies on the use of ENDS products reported on negative health impacts with few reporting on health outcomes from switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. The strength of evidence and quality of the published studies overall is poor.Our review has demonstrated that ENDS use is not causative for any harmful CVD outcomes and may be beneficial for hypertensive patients. Switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes resulted in reduced exacerbations of COPD, with no evidence of increased risk of asthma, long-term respiratory harm or deterioration in lung function. Other health outcomes such as mental health, cancer and mortality have not been adequately studied to form a consensus. However, the findings of our review did not negate the consensus held by many that ENDS use is safer than the risks posed from smoking cigarettes.Overall, our review found the research on ENDS use is not yet adequate to provide quantitative estimates about health risks. Consequently, the current body of evidence is inadequate for informing policy around tobacco harm reduction.

BackgroundTeenage mothers are at increased risk for adverse social outcomes and short-term health problems, but long-term impacts on mental health are poorly understood. The aims of our systematic review were to determine the association between teenage pregnancy and mental health beyond the postpartum period, critically appraise the literature’s quality and guide future research.MethodsWe systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science from inception to June 2017 for peer-reviewed articles written in English or French. Data were collected using a modified Cochrane Data Extraction Form. Study quality was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project critical appraisal tool. Heterogeneity of studies permitted only a qualitative synthesis.ResultsNine quantitative studies comprising the results from analyses of 11 cohorts met our criteria and were rated as strong (n=5), moderate (n=2) or weak (n=2). Three cohorts found a statistically significant association between teenage pregnancy and poor long-term mental health after adjustment, three found a statistically significant association before but not after adjustment and five did not find a statistically significant association. Studies observed varying degrees of attenuation after considering social context. Studies with statistically significant findings tended to comprise earlier cohorts, with outcomes measured at older ages.ConclusionsThe association between teenage pregnancy and mental health beyond the postpartum period remains unclear. Future studies should employ age–period–cohort frameworks to disentangle effects of normative patterns and stress accumulation. Social factors are important in determining long-term mental health of teenage mothers and should be prioritised in prevention and intervention strategies.
