The current ‘fake news’ phenomenon is a modern manifestation of something that has existed throughout history. The difference between what happens now and what has happened before is driven by the nature of the internet and social media – and Facebook in particular. Three key strands of Facebook’s business model – invading privacy to profile individuals, analysing mass data to profile groups, then algorithmically curating content and targeting individuals and groups for advertising – create a perfect environment for fake news. Proposals to ‘deal’ with fake news either focus on symptoms or embed us further in the algorithms that create the problem. Whilst we embrace social media, particularly as a route to news, there is little that can be done to reduce the impact of fake news and misinformation. The question is whether the benefits to freedom of expression that social media brings mean that this is a price worth paying.

Internet y las redes sociales se han convertido en las tecnologías estrella entre los estudiantes actuales. En cambio, todavía hay pocos estudios sobre el uso y percepción que el alumnado hace de ellas. Incluso, es difícil encontrar comparaciones entre las percepciones sobre el uso que realizan los estudiantes desde el punto de vista del profesorado y del mismo alumnado. El objetivo de este trabajo es profundizar en las diferencias entre las percepciones del profesorado y los estudiantes respecto a los usos de internet y redes sociales que estos últimos realizan. La muestra está conformada por 17 600 alumnos y 1 498 docentes de la Ciudad de México. Se realizó un estudio exploratorio y ex post-facto, mediante el instrumento de recogida de datos “Social Media Addiction Scale-Studen Form”. Entre los resultados destaca la diferencia entre la percepción de uso que presenta el alumnado y la que tiene el profesorado. Además, son los estudiantes que cursan sus estudios a distancia los que más utilizan las redes para su proceso de aprendizaje. Estos resultados sugieren la necesidad de tomar medidas educativas para intensificar el uso formativo de internet y las redes sociales entre el alumnado. Internet and social media have become so trend tech activity among the current students. On the other hand, there are still few studies about the usage and the perceptions students have about them. It is even harder to find some comparisons between the perception of the students and the professors in this topic. The purpose of this work is to deepen into the existent differences between the students and teachers perceptions referred to the Internet and social media usage. The sample gathered 17600 students and 1498 teachers within Mexico City. The study was made to explore and post-facto as well, using data form from "Social Media Addiction Scale-Student Form". The results emphasized the difference between the perception of usage for students and for teachers. Students who work their curricula on line, use the internet for their learning process. These results suggest the need to apply educative dictations to intensify the formative use of internet and social media in the student´s environment.

In the past US election cycle, and mirrored by similar events in Europe, two trends have come to dominate social discourse: truthiness (the validity of something based on how it feels) and post-fact (taking a position that ignores facts). Human discourse has always contained elements of these, but the nature of the Internet and social media has pushed truthiness and post-facts to new levels. The purpose of this paper is to explore the complicated relationship brands have with fake news and discuss the implications for brand management of a post-truth world. We explore the complicated relationship brands have with fake news: Brands both fuel fake news and are burned by it. Next, we turn to the intellectual and instrumental roots of the post-truth world: postmodernism and its technological enablers, show how marketing became a purveyor of the postmodern worldview, and how brands have increasingly adopted truthiness and post-fact positions. We offer managers a way out of the postmodern cul-de-sac, discussing ways brands can be rethought and managed in a post-rational world.

As Web 2.0 technologies have turned the Internet into an interactive medium, users dominate the field. With the spread of social media, the Internet has become much more user-oriented. In contrast to traditional media, social media's lack of control mechanisms makes the accuracy of spreading news questionable. This brings us to the significance of fact-checking platforms. This study investigates the antecedents of spreading false news in Turkey. The purpose of the study is to determine the features of fake news. For this purpose, teyit.org, the biggest fact-checking platform in Turkey, has been chosen for analysis. The current study shows fake news to be detectable based on four features: Propagation, User Type, Social Media Type, and Formatting. According to the logistic regression analysis, the study's model obtained 86.7% accuracy. The study demonstrates that Facebook increases the likelihood of news being fake compared to Twitter or Instagram. Emoji usage is also statistically significant in terms of increasing the probability of fake news. Unexpectedly, the impact of photos or videos was found statistically insignificant.

Although juror misconduct has always been a concern, the prevalence of technology available to jurors has increased the ease with which jurors can improperly communicate with others, publish information regarding the trial, and conduct outside research on the case. This chapter discusses the role of the Internet and social media in the courtroom and how access to this information in the form of midtrial publicity might impact juror decision-making. Additionally, it discusses steps that have been taken by courts around the United States to address the issue of Internet use by jurors as well as recommendations to limit the impact of the Internet and social media on juror decision-making.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is an organization against the background of Islamic jihad which was founded in Syria in 2014 and then brought the terror movement into war against those who disagreed with their movements including fighting Muslims in Syria. The advancement of Information Technology which gave birth to the internet and social media turned out to benefit ISIS, by spreading, recruiting, and raising funds through the internet and social media. ISIS distribution and propaganda can enter Indonesia through the internet and social media through the emergence of ISIS sites, Facebook ISIS and online bulletins and e-books online. The impact is that not a few Indonesian citizens are interested and join ISIS and even go to Syria and fight with ISIS.

Purpose Peer-reviewed research is the typical pathway for research to be implemented into clinical practice. However, the Internet, digital technology, and social media have introduced significant changes for how this information is shared, publicized, evaluated, and utilized. Some of these changes are positive, such as rapid distribution of needed information, whereas others are negative, such as widespread dissemination and influence of fake news and misinformation. The purpose of this editorial is to provide a brief look at how these negative changes have affected the helping professions. Conclusion In view of the wide-ranging challenges and influences described here, this editorial is a call for action to our researchers, educators, and clinicians to examine how social media has impacted the scientific practice of communication sciences and disorders. It concludes with a series of questions and examples for how this examination might unfold.

Abstract Background: In recent years, Internet and social media technology use have emerged as an integral tool of human society, and the evolution of technological integration, cyberspace, and web-technology has become a common practice in educational institutions. Internet usage among students has played an indispensable role in learning behavior; however, the excessive usage of the internet and social media leads to internet addiction. This original study has performed a focalized scrutiny on revealing relationships between internet addiction and associated factors among the students of medicine, dentistry, and pharmaceutical departments.Methods: This descriptive and analytical study recruited medical students from the Self-governing Education Incubator of Kermanshah. This survey distributed 753 questionnaires among the respondents’ three departments, and this statistical data reported on 420 valid responses of the respondents. They represent first and second-semester medical students of the academic year 2017-2018. The study selected medical students by applying Cochran's Sample Size Formula through Stratified Random Sampling and cross-sectional research design. The survey has utilized a demographic questionnaire of Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) for the data collection. The study analyzed received data by using SPSS version 24 and performed the descriptive statistics, and analytical statistics (t-test and ANOVA).Results: The results of the present study established that the majority of subjects were female students (53.3%), and the average age was 23.84±2.14, including the students of all departments. Besides, findings specified that the overall mean and standard deviation scores were 3.34 and ±0.88. Internet addiction revealed mean and the standard deviation score measured for all students 3.29±0.73, 3.17±0.92, and 3.57±0.64 correspondingly. The survey results illustrated that medical students’ internet addiction substantially correlated with demographic variables, such as age, marital status, the field of study, academic term, significant time of consuming the internet, the key reason of utilizing the internet, and daily usage of the internet (p<0.05).Conclusions: The results of the study specified that 25% of medical students showed internet addiction. The students are increasingly using the internet, and it has penetrated among students. The design and implementation of adequate educational programs and the application of internet-based efficiency interventions are essential for both knowledge acquisition and medical students’ healthy behavior.

<p><em>The internet’s influence on the production and consumption of news has brought about revolutionary changes in the field of journalism. The people previously known as the </em><em>“</em><em>audiences</em><em>”</em><em> are now actively involved in creating and disseminating news via online news sites and websites. This increase in players has both positive and negative consequences for democracy. </em><em></em><em></em></p><p><em>This paper provides an overview of the positive and negative changes that have come about due to convergence. Through an observation of what is happening on various online sites and journalists’ everyday experiences, the paper offers an analysis of the impact globally. On a positive side, for example, citizens are engaging in conversations online with journalists and also with each other on various social platforms on issues that matter to them. The internet is applauded for promoting the number of voices online and freedom of expression. On a negative side, citizens bemoan the rise in fake news and disinformation which is harmful for democracy and is discrediting journalism. Journalism is fundamental as it influences society’s worldview. It thus becomes paramount for media houses and society to be more digital literate so as to distinguish between “real” and “fake” news in order to make more informed decisions.</em></p>
