Traditionally, large businesses and multinational corporations dominated the internationalization process of the European tourism industry. Recent research evidence, however, indicates that a substantial proportion of smaller, growth-oriented businesses in this sector are engaged in, and actively pursue, a variety of innovative and collaborative internationalization strategies. Using longitudinal data from a pan-European survey of SMEs operating in the tourism industry, the authors examine the extent to which entrepreneurs innovate, cooperate and become involved in virtual teams of e-entrepreneurs. The competitive advantage of virtual teams is evaluated and an agenda for further research is suggested.

This paper aims at exploring the link between internationalization strategies and local identity. More precisely, this study analyzes how firms manage this relationship, understanding if a firm can express the local identity and to what extent this latter can be extended through without jeopardizing the essential soul of its products/services.
The analysis is developed according to a double level that includes the recognition of both distinctive resources and competences and the specific relational capabilities necessary in the internationalization process. Furthermore, the strength of this paper is represented by the examination of different types of firms (single location full-service restaurants, chain restaurants and fast food restaurants) operating in the food service sector.

This paper attempts to discover the role that virtual teams play in increasing the number of innovations in the research and development (R&D) department in global companies, and the extent to which this affects achieving a competitive advantage for the organizations under study (SAMSUNG, LG, IBM, and Toyota). The research was based on the method of exploratory analysis of data as the method of the study, and to achieve this goal, the researcher collected data on the number of hypothetical employees assigned to the research and development department in those companies compared to investments and sales and related to the number of innovations during the period between 2009- 2016. The research was based on the method of exploratory data analysis as a method for the study and analysis of the data used. The results of the research concluded that there is a positive direct relationship between the previous variables. Virtual teams are also one of the most important modern methods used in modern business enterprises and their necessity as a result of increasing response and shifting from serial work to simultaneous and parallel work to increase innovation, which leads to an increase in the competitive advantage of these organizations. The study recommends the need to pay attention to building effective virtual teams within organizations because of their essential advantages and to overcome the most important challenges that hinder the effectiveness and success of these teams. By increasing collaboration, interaction and efficiency leadership.

The main purpose of this chapter is to analyze why some firms fail in their international operation either right after their exposure or after a certain period of time. Resource-Based View (RBV), which deals with firms' competitive advantage and their superior performance, is used to predict the underlying reasons of firms' failure of internationalization process. In international marketing, RBV basically states that the firm internationally expands its territory when it decides to exploit its resources and capabilities in other markets. This chapter extends RBV literature by applying it to de-internationalization process of the firm. It also provides a framework that shows the actions that need to be taken when firms are faced with a failure in their international operation.

The objective of this chapter is to offer an approach to the generation of competitive advantage in the tourism industry based on the definition of intellectual capital and its relationship with professional competences in tourism, which is why the topic of educational competences in higher education is described, since professional skills are achieved through these. Subsequently, the exploration of the intellectual capital concept and the conception of tourism is presented. Finally, the relation of the thematic axes of this chapter is presented to incorporate the conclusion that describes that the educational competences in higher education applied by professionals in the tourism industry will result in the productivity and profitability of the organizations known as intellectual capital.

This chapter focuses on the collaborative use of computing resources to support decision making in industry. Through the use of middleware for desktop grid computing, the idle CPU cycles available on existing computing resources can be harvested and used for speeding-up the execution of applications that have “non-trivial” processing requirements. This chapter focuses on the desktop grid middleware BOINC and Condor, and discusses the integration of commercial simulation software together with free-to-download grid middleware so as to offer competitive advantage to organizations that opt for this technology. It is expected that the low-intervention integration approach presented in this chapter (meaning no changes to source code required) will appeal to both simulation practitioners (as simulations can be executed faster, which in turn would mean that more replications and optimization are possible in the same amount of time) and management (as it can potentially increase the return on investment on existing resources).

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the internationalization strategies of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the interaction between network ties and “soft” internal resources at the foundation of knowledge management (KM). Specifically, it identifies the firms’ internal capabilities that affect KM strategies, and their collective influence on the degree of internationalization; verifies the influence of network ties on the internationalization process itself; and develops a conceptual “preliminary theoretical framework of SME internationalization capabilities and networks.” Design/methodology/approach The primary research and analysis are based on a proportional stratified sample of Sicilian wineries; while the conceptual and implicative developments of the paper rest on the combination of the theoretical with the primary findings of the research, and, it has been designed and tested through eight experts’ interviews/reviews. Findings Findings underline a strong influence of the internal capabilities of firms on the internationalization process. In addition, an important role in the export process emerges from the acquisition of information and knowledge through the establishment of networks. Research limitations/implications The results need to be interpreted within the context for which this study was designed and cannot be applied generally to all businesses. However, results allow cellars’ managers to better understand the relationships among the influencing factors of SMEs internationalization. Originality/value The originality of the paper lies not only in its above-stated explicit theoretical objectives and findings but also in its comprehensive conceptual framework that theoretically incorporates the “strategic” with the “internal” and “networking” aspects; purposefully also arming the industry with a practicable tool toward managerial implementation.

Rapid new product developments (NPDs) have drastically changed the competitive landscape in the global economy. Because the time-to-market dimension of product introduction has become a crucial determinant of multinational corporations’ (MNCs’) competitive advantage, the ability of MNCs to exploit their knowledge globally across subsidiaries using cross-teams has become an important source of competitive advantage. Recognizing the crucial role of MNCs’ knowledge management in NPD, the authors develop a conceptual framework to investigate the antecedents and outcomes of international knowledge acquisition at the cross-team level. The framework suggests that though it is important to acquire necessary knowledge resources for NPD, managers must nurture an NPD project team's realized absorptive capacity to transform the acquired knowledge resources into NPD capabilities, which in turn affect new product market performance.
