The Indonesian government's efforts to eradicate illiteracy deserve appreciation, but this has not been accompanied by successful efforts in building a reading culture in the community. This is in accordance with various world surveys that note the low level of literacy in Indonesia. There are several studies through quantitative studies on interest and fondness for reading in various provinces in Indonesia, and this can be used as comparison material. One of the comprehensive studies conducted by the Center for Policy Research on Education and Culture, Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Education and Culture released the Reading Literacy Activity Index (Alibaca Index) in 34 provinces in Indonesia. Seeing this data, what becomes interesting to study later is whether the reading literacy level has a correlation with the student's academic achievement variable. This is important because in the end the school/madrasah literacy movement is aimed at achieving the highest level that goes beyond the level of habituation and development, namely the level of learning. This study aims to answer the questions, 1) Is there a significant positive correlation between students' reading literacy levels and academic achievement, in 34 provinces in Indonesia? and 2) What strategies should schools/madrasahs do to increase students' reading literacy levels and at the same time increase the achievement of academic achievement? This study uses a descriptive correlational approach by collecting data through the study of documentation and interviews. The results showed that the correlation between reading activity index and academic achievement (r) was 0.766. There are several innovation ideas also described qualitatively as a result of interviews.

Sports participation reported in a positive relationship with health and academic achievement. Sports participation may improve cognitive health leading to improved academic achievement. Some other factors may also be involved in this regard including parental support and self-esteem. In this study, we examined the relationship between sports participation, parental support, self-esteem and academic achievement due to concern about reduced education level of students and serious lack of research regarding this issue in Pakistan. We hypothesized that sports participation would influence students’ academic achievement. We further conceptualized a mediation model in which sports participation enhanced academic achievement through enhancing parental support and self-esteem. 248 students from three universities of Pakistan (male = 188; mean age = 17.5, SD = 1.15; female = 60; mean age =17.3, SD = 1.18) participated in the study, in which questionnaires were used to measure parental support, sports participation, and self-esteem. Two scales were used to measure parental support (school based parental support and sports participation based parental support). Sports participation level was measured using an adapted version of The Physical Activity Index (PAI) Scale consisting of 3 items. Rosenberg self-esteem scale assessed self-esteem. Data analysis was performed using the structural equation modelling. We found no direct relationship between sports participation and academic achievement. We found parental support and self-esteem as mediators in the relationship between sports participation and academic achievement. The mediational models suggested focus on vital role of parental support and self-esteem to have better academic performance.

Many empirical studies have been conducted to investigate self-regulated learning (SRL) in the Western countries. Less well investigated is the SRL in the Chinese Mainland students and how it affects their academic achievement. On the basis of PISA 2009, this paper is aimed at exploring the SRL of 15-year-old Shanghai students, as measured by cognitive strategy (elaboration and memorization), metacognition (metacognition in understanding and remembering, metacognition in summarizing, and control strategy), and motivational belief (enjoyment of reading). In the aspect of SRL nature, the results reveal that 15-year-old students in Shanghai use elaboration strategy frequently and seldom use memorization strategy, and that they have high metacognition in understanding, remembering, and summarizing but have low control strategy, and that their enjoyment of reading is relatively high. In the aspect of SRL’s consequence for reading literacy, findings from multilevel linear regression corroborate previous evidence from the Western countries about the effect of SRL on academic achievement. Specifically, elaboration strategy, metacognition in understanding and remembering, metacognition in summarizing, control strategy, and enjoyment of reading are conducive to students’ reading literacy, while memorization strategy exerts a significantly negative effect on reading literacy. The findings could be useful in helping us to gain a better understanding of Shanghai students’ SRL.

Reading literacy in PISA 2018 – psychological insight and interpretation of the results of Slovene students The paper presents an interweaving and analysis of the already published results of the PISA 2018 reading literacy study with our own secondary analysis of the relations between certain factors and achievement in reading literacy in more than 6,000 Slovenian students. The content of the article is divided into three parts. In the first part, we highlight the general achievement in reading literacy amongst Slovenian 15-year-olds in terms of the efforts of the school system (Ministry of Education, Science and Sport) and the National Education Institute Slovenia for the development of this literacy in the last two decades. We also highlight some systemic changes for enhancing the development of reading literacy (e.g., Council Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning; the National Strategy for the Development of Reading Literacy for the period 2019-2030). In the second part of the article, we try to explain the substantial differences in reading achievement and motivation in Slovenian students with regard to gender. Using a biopsychosocial model (Halpern, 2012) and research pointing to the origins of gender differences, we point to some critical areas in the development of reading literacy and to possible ways to reduce these differences. Finally, we emphasize some characteristics of a stimulating learning environment in the Slovenian language course for the development of reading literacy, as perceived by students (teacher enthusiasm, perceived learning and emotional support of teachers and providing feedback to students) and compare them with the perceived learning environment of students in other OECD countries. We draw attention to caution in the interpretation of the results, especially in the (direct and causal) relationships between some teacher characteristics and students’ individual variables - reading motivation and achievement in reading literacy. Keywords: reading literacy, Slovenian students, gender differences, reading motivation, stimulating learning environment

The study investigated the pedagogical competence of teachers and its influence on student’s academic achievement. The descriptive survey research design was adopted and the census (all) sampling technique was used to sample 250 Junior High School (JHS) teachers in Ashaiman Municipality. The collected data from the close-ended questionnaire was analysed with mean and standard deviation on the scale of 1-4 and the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that as a pedagogical competence, the teachers provided appropriate feedback, adapted to changing conditions, explained content to students and communicated learning goals effectively. It was also found that there was a weak positive relationship between the classroom management competence of teachers and student’s academic achievement. The study, therefore, concluded that the pedagogical competence of teachers could help promote deep knowledge, understanding and expectation among students if teacher’s pedagogical competencies are effective. Also, when teachers increase their knowledge and competence to manage the classroom, they could provide high expectations for student’s social support, guidance and independent thought in learning. Recommendations were made to the municipal education directorate, Ghana Education Service and Ministry of Education, Ghana based on the findings.

This article describes the model of metadisciplinary methodical system on the problems of maintenance of language culture, include speech culture, reading culture, and culture of communication on the Russian language. Such model serves as the foundation for reorganization of education for the purpose of increasing language culture of the students based in the use of metadisciplinary methodical system that allows translating the necessary content not as a set of information for memorization, but as a set of knowledge for sensible usage. The author underlines the need for creating a model based on the principle that reflect the mechanisms of maintenance of language culture of students at the stage of public education, as well as describes the technology and conditions for implementation of the model. This model is development in terms of the project Joint Venture "Concord" LLC supported by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The scientific novelty consists in structural-algorithmic representation of the sequence, nature, and specificity of the model of metadisciplinary methodical system on the problems of maintenance of language culture of the students. The main conclusion consists in the observation that the creation of such model would improve the quality of public education overall, and with regards to formation of language culture of the students in particular.

There is great interest in the effect of school resources on academic achievement, but it is seldom that an opportunity arises in which this relationship may be examined in an international milieu. This paper presents the types of resources available in the 27 countries participating in the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievements (IEA) Reading Literacy Study, and explores the relationship of the most pertinent variables to achievement. More particularly, the focus is on school and classroom libraries, their description and use, and on classroom teacher's practices as they relate to library use
