In this study we evaluated the protective effects of jamun Syzygium cumini seed and orange Citrus sinensis peel extracts on renotoxicity of microcystin LR in male rats. Groups A-F were given daily treatments for 30 days. Group A (Control): No treatment was given; Group B: microcystin (10 µg/kg body wt); Group C: microcystin (10 µg/kg body wt) and jamun seed extract (200 mg/kg body wt); Group D: microcystin (10 µg/kg body wt) and orange peel extract (200 mg/kg body wt; Group E: orange peel extract (200 mg/kg body wt); Group F: jamun seed extract (200 mg/kg body wt). Kidney were fixed at 15th and 30th day after the treatments. In 15 day MCLR (group B) treated rats shrunken glomeruli, hypertrophy of epithelial cells of tubules. vacuolation of cytoplasm and obliterated tubular lumina were noticed. In MCLR+JSE (group C) and MCLR+OPE (group D) treated rats almost similar changes were noticed as seen in MCLR treated rats. In OPE (group E) and JSE (group F) treated rats no visible morphological alterations were nojticed. Following 30 day MCLR treatment (group B), increased cellularity of glomeruli, no space between the Bowman's capsule and glomerulus, glomerular degeneration, dilated tubules, separation of tubular epithelial cells from underlying basement membrane, tubular vacuolization and degeneration with necrotic nuclei in lumina and deposition of eosin-positive material in the tubules were observed. In MCLR+JSE (group C) and MCLR+OPE (group D) treated rats the glomeruli were swollen showing increased cellularity. No degeneration was noticed in glomeruli. Tubules were dilated, however, at few places few epithelial cells were degenerating. Necrotic nuclei were not seen in tubular lumina. In OPE (group E) and JSE (group F) treated rats the kidney exhibited no histological changes.

Abstract Aim Onion is one of the commonly cultivated and consumed vegetables rich in nutrients and phytochemicals. Various nutraceuticals are found in the outer fleshy layers and dry peel of onion which usually is treated as a common biowaste. Diabetes mellitus is a leading non communicable disease causing hyperglycemia and increased production of free radicals that potentially disrupts antioxidant enzymatic activity. Considering global consumption of wheat, the present study was designed to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of wheat bread supplemented with onion peel extract (OPE) or onion powder (OP) on diabetic rats. Methods In this study, ethanolic extract of onion peel and onion bulb were prepared separately. Male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups (n = 7). Different regimens of supplemented wheat bread (OPE (1% and 3%) and OP (5% and 7%)) were given to diabetic rats for eight weeks, plain bread was used as the control. Blood glucose level, body weight and activities of SOD, CAT, GPx, GR, GSH and MDA in the liver and kidney tissues were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Version (25) and Dunnett’s multiple comparison test. Results Bread supplemented with 1% and 3% onion peel extract and 7% onion powder significantly reduced blood glucose levels and MDA in the treated rats compared with the control group diabetic rats. Body weight of diabetic rats was reduced for control group, while onion supplemented diet improved the body weight of treated rats. Onion supplementation also brought significant improvement in antioxidant enzyme activities among the treated diabetic rats. Conclusion These findings suggested that onion supplementation is effective in lowering blood glucose and could potentially aid in protecting organs from oxidative stress.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) have attracted huge importance due to their distinctive chemical, biological and physical properties. Silver nanoparticles are widely synthesized by the chemical method, which involves the use of toxic chemicals which affects its applications. The bio-reduction method, in comparison with chemical method is more economic and eco-friendly. In the present work, the bio-based production of Ag-NPs was done by using peel extract of orange (citrus sinensis), which played a role of reducing and stabilizing agent. The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles was optimized by one factor at a time (OFAT) with respect to peel extract concentration, silver nitrate concentration and reaction temperature. The green synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Disk diffusion method was used for the study of antibacterial activity of the bio-synthesized silver nanoparticles against the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that at a peel extract concentration of 6%, the temperature of 60oC and silver nitrate concentration of 0.1M, the synthesis of Ag-NPs was effective. The orange peel synthesized Ag-NPs showed effective antibacterial activity against both bacteria. However better activity was observed against bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The results confirmed the synthesis of Ag-NPs using peel extract of citrus sinensis and its role as antibacterial agent.
