In recent years, wooden structures have been being gradually replaced by reinforced concrete and brick buildings. Although a conservation system has been established in Indonesia, specific conservation and repair guidelines for traditional wooden buildings have not been well-regulated. This paper takes the omo sebua as a research subject, aims to clarify the deterioration, deformation and their causes, and to propose guidelines for its conservation.

The results of the deterioration and deformation investigation are as following: the maximum inclination of the short pillars is 5/100, and the most common inclination is 2/100. The significant sinkage of the foundation stones reaches 56 cm and the average sinkage is 20~30 cm. The maximum inclination of side pillars is 4/100, and the most common inclination is 2/100. Besides, the corruptions of the roof frame concentrate on the gable wall and termite damages can be seen in the whole building.

Basing on the investigation result, our proposals are as following: 1) conduct a dismantling restoration; 2) recycle the used materials as much as possible to maintain the authenticity of the building; 3) use new materials that are the same as the original ones; 4) rethatch the roofing by sago palm leaf; 5) conduct a structural diagnose, reinforce the structure against an earthquake; 6) include electrical equipment and disaster management in a restoration.

Concrete as the most used material, is known as an integral part of construction. So far, many studies have been done in the field of improving the quality of concrete that most of them have examined change in concrete mix which is called concrete mix plan. However, the use of additives and also replacing commonly used materials in concrete with new materials always has been noteworthy. In this study, description of tests that have been done on fiber reinforced concrete will be discussed. Also, the condition of concrete mix plan will be discussed. Comparison between results of the tests showed that Forta reinforced concretes have more compressive, flexural and tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than normal and ordinary concretes.Journal of the Institute of Engineering, 2018, 14(1): 126-135

From the environmental perspective, wooden structures are favorable insulators that are suitable for carbon fixation and wooden-related products are considered the most sustainable material. Research has indicated that wooden structures have superior energy-saving performance compared to reinforced concrete (RC) structures. In this study, a CLT-based hybrid structure system that potentially improves the efficiency of energy consumption is proposed. The proposed hybrid structure system, which preserved original RC beams, columns and replaced CLT floors and walls, has less building weight compared to the original RC building. Additionally, less energy required for the manufacturing of building materials in the renovation of the aged building is achieved, compared to building a new CLT building. The energy consumptions for buildings with heights of 10 stories were compared. CLT and RC were selected as benchmark building materials to compare the energy-saving efficiencies with the proposed hybrid structure system. In addition, to examine the energy consumption differences at different latitudes, the energy consumptions in Taipei, Tokyo, Harbin, and Singapore were compared as well. The simulation results indicate the proposed hybrid structure system, which comprises RC beams and columns and CLT floors and walls, and has an energy-saving efficiency close to that of a CLT structure, by approximately 3–5% higher, however, had a superior energy consumption performance to the RC structure. In general, the proposed hybrid structure system can be effectively used for old building renewal in the selected Asian cities.

It took until the first half of the 20th century for architects’ ideas to mature, in conjunction with the new materials of steel, reinforced concrete, and electric light, into the distinctive imagery now recognized as modern architecture. But that imagery was only the outward sign of new ways of organizing structure, space, and surface. The Conclusion clarifies that, for much of the 20th century, modern architecture stood for the place of the future—as related to the past—in the present. But the associations of those ideas about future, present, and past always remained complex, changing, and contested. For all its global effects, modernity was never a unified phenomenon.

Abstract in the article the main types of building structures are considered, which are distinguished by the type of material. For the purpose of studying, each type has brief information including its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with others. In the section reinforced concrete structures, the authors characterize this material from three sides - this is the method of manufacture, the type of concrete and its stressed state. As a result, it was found that when choosing a foundation, special attention is paid to: bearing capacity, type of building being built, soil characteristics. In addition to the above, it can be added that weight reduction, cost reduction and material consumption in reinforced concrete structures are possible through the use of high-strength concrete and reinforcement. Metal structures are the most popular building material. The possibilities of this material are very diverse: building designs, designs specifically for certain seismic and climatic conditions, and high decorative properties. Due to its strength and rigidity, buildings can withstand hurricane gusts of wind and earthquakes. In the manufacture of structures in the factory and during installation, steel is subjected to various technological operations: welding, cutting, machining. It was found that in this case the steel does not collapse, it retains the microstructure and mechanical properties. Finally, steel should not have a significant cost of manufacturing structures from it. Turning to the section of wooden structures, the authors list the main advantages - it is comfortable and environmentally friendly and material.

In the normal practice in the reinforced concrete design, the main reinforcement steel bar and links was used to fabricate the concrete structure. However new materials such as steel fiber has been introduced as the reinforcement to the reinforced concrete structure [1]. Nowadays, the application of fiber in concrete increase slightly as an engineering material demands. Fibers have distinctive of geometry, size and material. The characteristics and properties of fiber influence the properties concrete. Steel, glass and synthetic fibers were used in concrete in 1960s because of the difficulty to handle the asbestos fiber [2].

The purpose of this study is to analyze strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats faced by the Padang city BPBD in managing temporary evacuation sites. This type of research is qualitative with descriptive methods. The results of this study indicate that the strength of the Regional Disaster Management Agency in the City of Padang in managing this temporary evacuation site is to have a legal basis such as a Decree issued by the Padang BPBD Chief of Management in conducting management, law number 24 of 2007 concerning countermeasures disaster and lau number 28 of 2002 concerning building. As for the Weaknesses faced are human resources and the limited budges for managing temporary evacuation sites. Then what becomes an opportunity is that the existence of the legal basis provides an opportunity to collaboration with other organizations in evaluating the management of temporary evacuations sites. Furthermore, the threat faced is the presence of irresponsible people who take electrical equipment arround the temporary evacuations site

With coverage of municipal transport network, more and more pedestrian bridges appeared in traffic dense areas of the city, thus well solving the security problems of pedestrians crossing the street. Although at this stage, for the construction of pedestrian bridges in practical engineering, the traditional reinforced concrete structure still occupied dominant position, a variety of new materials have also been more widely used. This paper mainly discusses the development of materials used in pedestrian bridges.

After materials with superconducting temperatures higher than liquid nitrogen have been prepared, more emphasis has been on increasing the current densities (Jc) of high Tc superconductors than finding new materials with higher transition temperatures. Different processing techniques i.e thin films, shock wave processing, neutron radiation etc. have been applied in order to increase Jc. Microstructural studies of compounds thus prepared have shown either a decrease in gram boundaries that act as weak-links or increase in defect structure that act as flux-pinning centers. We have studied shock wave synthesized Tl-Ba-Cu-O and shock wave processed Y-123 superconductors with somewhat different properties compared to those prepared by solid-state reaction. Here we report the defect structures observed in the shock-processed Y-124 superconductors.
