Computer-based test (CBT) and paper-based test (PBT) are two test modes to the test takers that have been widely adopted in the field of language testing or assessment over the last few decades. Due to the rapid development of science and technology, it is a trend for universities and educational institutions striving rather hard to deliver the test on a computer. Therefore, research on the comparison between these two test modes has attracted much attention to investigate whether the PBT could be completely replaced. At the same time, task difficulty is always a key element to reflect test takers’ performances. Numerous studies have laid a solid foundation and guidance about the comparative study of test takers’ performance on CBT and PBT, but there still remains a scarcity from the perspective of task difficulties with different Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) task levels in particular. This study, therefore, compared the test takers’ performance on both CBT and PBT across tasks with different CEFR levels. A total of 289 principal recommended high school test takers from Macau took the pilot Test of Academic English (TAE) at a local university. The results indicated that there was a difference between test takers’ performance on different test modes across different CEFR levels, but only CEFR A2 level showed a statistically difference between CBT and PBT. And since science and technology are continuously developing, it is essential for the university to consider switching the test mode from PBT to CBT.

Internet is a versatile tool used by the students that draws attention of many researchers. But little research has been found regarding the comparative study of internet usage among university students. For this reason, the study surveyed the internet usage among university students coming from Business Studies, Science & Arts disciplines at University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and the overall perceptions towards the internet usage. So we developed a survey questionnaire and collected data on students’ demographics, internet usage behavior and purposes of internet use. Therefore, we distributed 50 questionnaires to each discipline and a total of 150 questionnaires were returned and all were usable. Then we analyzed the obtained data using SPSS. The results show that the percentage of internet usage among the students coming from Business Studies, Science and Arts disciplines is 100%, 92% and 90% respectively. The study recommends that the students coming from Science and Arts background should enhance the internet usage. And the students from all backgrounds should enhance the frequency of internet access per day and invest more on internet usage. The study also recommends that the universities should provide adequate internet facilities and enabling environment for student. This study provides a theoretical and empirical basis for further studies on internet usage of university students.

Space science and Geomatics education in Nepal is recently started on some of the training institution and university of Nepal. Preliminary subjects required for space science and technology have been introduced into science curricula at the higher secondary level of the Nepalese’s school, however the benefit of space science and technology have not been appreciated enough. Facilities and resources of teaching science and technology at educational institutions are not yet developed. Attempts have been made to incorporate the elements of space science and technology into undergraduate level of education of the university. This paper starts with the discussion on the space science education in Nepal at the school and college level and mainly focus on initiation taken by the training institution and university of Nepal to introduce the subjects of space science and technology at their curriculum on geomatics engineering and other engineering education. Some recommendation have been made to introduce the different type of educational courses and/or training on space science and technology, which will meet the needs of development to built a general capability in space science as a necessary support for infrastructure development of Nepal and consequently will help to promote the educational activities on space science education in the country.

AbstractInformation and communications technologies (ICT) have greatly impacted the education sector over the years leading to electronic service delivery. Universities all over the world are embracing ICTs especially the Internet, making use of web 2.0 applications, that is, social networks and moving their services from manual based to electronic platforms. The comparative study was done to find out to what extent the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) (Zimbabwe) and the University of Venda (RSA) have embraced ICTs in the conduct of business and how this has impacted on their service delivery. A combination of web content analysis and a comparative study of the web presence of the two universities was done which revealed that the universities are present on some web 2.0 applications though not fully exploiting all the functions. It is recommended that these universities adopt online service delivery to enhance and develop lives of the university community. Keywords: Information and communications technology, information society, global village, universities, e-learning.

The article comprises a communication by Dr. Dyya Nafi, the professor at the University of Baghdad, (at present of the city of Vladimir, Russia) given at the XII Conference of Arabists of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (November 27–29, 2017, Moscow) on the first Russian-Arabic dictionary of proverbs and sayings, which was published by the publishing house “Nowar” (Baghdad) in 2017. The communication stresses that the comparative paremiological studies of the Russian and Arab sources were conducted both in Iraq (the Russian Department of the Baghdad University) and in Russia. As an example the speaker did refer to the book “The Comparative Study of Russian and Arab Proverbs” (Baghdad, 1978) as well as the Russian-Arabic Phraseological Dictionary (Moscow, 1989). In addition to these groundbreaking works were prepared a number of relevant MA and PhD thesis. The speaker has stressed the fact that his own research with regard to its volume and structure is offers sufficiently more information in comparison to the already published works and is the first dictionary of this kind published in Arabic.

A prerequisite to evolving the concept of computerized assessment method requires a comparable test scores data based on the comparative study scores of both paper-based test (PBT) and computer-based test (CBT) methods. Previous research studies reported that even though both testing types show significant commonalities in many areas of technical and academic concerns, still there are substantial variances found in test scores. Consequently, in various educational assessment systems this significant inconsistency raises serious question on the rationale of substituting PBT with CBT. This is imperative to compare the both testing modes and to provide a concrete base for this replacement. This research study was aimed at implementing an achievement test and a motivation level checking questionnaire in order to test the effectiveness and validity of the CBT and to measure the level of student motivation that directly controls the performance and results. Researcher aims to get some valid data to provide a solid base for the effective use of CBT in academic and placement modes. Results showed that (a) the pretests improved the results by providing experience for the tests themselves (b) participants in CBT group showed better test performance. In fact, CBT is known to be an efficient tool for assessment.

The South African government has mandated national universities to emancipate and capacitate the teachers of the selected schools in science and technology through an Open Distance Learning (ODL) mode of which the University of South Africa form part of such as Higher Educational Institutions cohort. This chapter reports on the observations, field notes and interviews that were conducted with a group of four teachers and eight learners as a case study at Lovemore Primary School. This Community Engagement chapter focuses on teaching science and technology. In this chapter, researchers argue that focus group participants were able to give enough ideas, thoughts and points to enable the team to design an intervention programme through an Action Research approach. A developmental theory was used to underpin the study while the researcher and participants were engaged in a Community of Practice paradigm. More sessions will be planned to jointly structure the way forward and cultivate the nature of the intervention strategies.

Banten Jaya University (UNBAJA) is one of the educational institutions engaged in technology and information, which part of the system has been computerized. But in development there is still a work system that is done manually. Data processing from information that is done manually can be said to be far from the goal, given the importance of effectiveness and efficiency of employee performance. Therefore, Banten Jaya University must be able to improve the quality and quality of employee performance by holding a Decision Support System using the simple addinue weight (SAW) method, which is a computer-based information system and also includes a system with a knowledge management basis, used to support decision making in an organization or company. The decision support system for selecting exemplary employees at the University of Banten Jaya (UNBAJA) can be run well. The development model used is Waterfall. The stage of the process of making a decision support system for selecting exemplary employees at the University of Banten Jaya (UNBAJA) begins with making a design, determining the flow of the work system, making a coding program, making a design view. The decision support system for selecting exemplary employees at the University of Banten Jaya (UNBAJA) uses a PHP MySQL database server. From the test results using the Black Box, the results show that the system testing decision support system for selecting exemplary employees at the University of Banten Jaya (UNBAJA) is successful and can be used and operated well.
