Up to now, most researchers have been paying attention to the negative transfer of mother tongue to second language writing. Few studies, if any, have touched upon the positive transfer. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the positive transfer of Chinese to 26 first-year university students’ English writing holistically and segmentally in the use of words, grammar, coherence, and content and organization. The result of the Pearson correlation coefficient turned out to be 0.43 at the 5% significance level, indicating a positive relationship between the Chinese writing and the English writing. The questionnaires have also confirmed the result of the correlation analysis. In particular, the positive transfer of Chinese seems to be more apparent in the content and organization of the English writing, followed by coherence and use of words. Thus, it can be concluded that the positive transfer of mother tongue can facilitate English writing.

Coopersmith Self-esteem and Beck Hopelessness Scales were completed at the beginning and end of the summer camp by designed the university. The obtained data were analysed in the SPSS 18.0 program and the significance level was taken as 0.05. The descriptive statistics, independent simple t test, paired simple t test and Pearson correlation were used for analyse the data in the study. According to the results of the research, no significant difference was observed in the comparison of the hopelessness and self-esteem levels between pre and post-test. In addition, there was a significant difference in the hopelessness level of male and female students but any significant difference was not observed in terms of self-esteem. There was a significant relationship between hopelessness and self-esteem pre and post-test. These result shows that a 1-week summer camp cannot change the hopelessness or self-esteem level. However, as the self-esteem rises, the rate of despair decreases whereas as the despair rises, the selfesteem decreases.

This research attempts to discuss the validity of introducing the evaluation of students’ critical thinking skills (CTS) into the assessment system of college English writing through an empirical study. In this paper, 30 College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) writing samples were collected and analyzed. Students’ CTS and the final scores of collected writing samples were respectively regarded as two independent variables to make a correlation analysis through Pearson Correlation of SPSS17.0 software. In addition, Excel was also used as an instrument to analyze the research results. The findings suggest that the two variables are significantly and positively correlated with each other, that is, students’ CTS greatly influence their English writing proficiency. Thus, it is quite necessary to cultivate students’ CTS to improve their English writing competence.

Situated within a Systemic Functional Linguistics genre paradigm, this study adopted a function-based linguistic approach to examine the argument structures in English writing produced by Chinese university students of English as foreign language (EFL). Their English writing was contrasted with three other sets of argumentative essays in order to explore differences and similarities in the use of argument structures. The four sets of essays were produced by three groups of university students: native English- and Chinese-speaking university students and Chinese university EFL students. Participants’ interviews and questionnaire responses were also collected. The study found that most native English-speaking participants used an analytical arguing strategy, while most Chinese-speaking university participants preferred a hortatory argument structure both in their English and Chinese writing. It was also found that Chinese participants’ English writing was influenced by both English and Chinese.

This research paper investigates the extent to which Jordanian university students majoring in English are aware of the different phonetic forms or alternates of the English plural morpheme. The paper analyzes the results taken from 50 fourth-year female university students and 50 first-year female university students at Princess Alia University College at Al-Balqa Applied University in Amman. They were presented with randomized lists of 30 monosyllabic nonsense nouns selected to test their awareness of the various phonetic formsof the plural morpheme in English. The results showed that the fourth-year students outperformed the first-year students in producing the various phonetic productions of the plural morpheme. The groups used the same repair strategies. Analogy from the mother tongue was detected in the responses of both groups.

Communicative effectiveness in foreign language writing refers to the ability to dominate a multidimensional system that includes linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic knowledge. This work focuses on measuring the efficacy in Lebanese Spanish students’ writing throughout different stages. All students’ mother tongue is Arabic. For this purpose, a scale of measurement of communicative effectiveness has been applied in the texts written by 57 university students. The results attest an incidence of the level in the grammar domain, whereas this one does not seem to have an impact on the structure of the text, the recognition of the rhetorical situation or the selection of the ideas.

The main purpose of this study is to find out the obesity prevalence among university students. In addition to the main purpose, another aims of this study is to determine the individual features of participants related to obesity such as gender, age, being an obese in family and doing physical activity. This study was performed on university students from five different faculties of Çukurova University in 2015-2016 educational season. In this study, 894 volunteer students accepted for attending to the research. The mean age of female participants was 21.39±2.53 years. However, mean of males was 22.28±2.73 years. Descriptive study design and causal comparative methods were used. The individual information form created by the researcher was used to determine the demographic characteristics of the participants. BMI was analyzed both quantitative and categorical ways in this study. WHO’s classification method was used for categorizing of BMI. All findings in the study were summarized by descriptive statistical methods such as mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, etc. The independent sample T test, the ANOVA test, Pearson correlation test and chi-square test were used. In all analyzes, significance level was accepted as p <0.05.The mean of the BMI was calculated as 22.40±3.49 kg/m2. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean BMI of males (23.80±3.40 kg/m2) and female participants (21,01±2,99 kg/m2, t(-13,043)=892, p<0.05). Also, it was found statically significant difference among BMI classification groups for gender (obesity rate of male: 4.9% ; female:1.1%) , x2(df=3, n=894)=101.21, p<0.05. These results have indicated that the rate of obesity among university students is lower than normal population in Turkey. At the same time the findings of this study have shown similar characteristics with the university students’ of other countries reported by previous studies. In conclusion, it should be taken some measures for reducing overweightness and obesity such as increasing physical activity possibilities for people in all condition by local and central Governments, increasing the number of hours of physical education and sports lessons in schools as much as possible and the processing of these courses must be inspected strongly, more strict measures taken by the government to reduce obesity rates in society, informing and awareness of community on obesity, informing adequate and balanced nutrition by using the all media devices and facilities.

Danish university students are often criticised for a general lack of proficiency in orthography, punctuation and grammar in the academic register. However, there has been limited empirical substantiation to support the claim. In this paper, we present the results of a study of linguistic deviations in university assignments written by first-year Journalism and Danish students at the University of Southern Denmark (N = 100 students). The results show that the majority of both groups struggles with Danish orthography and punctuation when writing academically, which seems to confirm some of the assertions made by the critics. However, it is argued that the inherent conflict of orthographic and punctuation principles in Danish as well as the specific characteristics and challenges of academic writing are more probable causes than the claimed general decline in the writing proficiency of students.

The study aimed to know the skills of military training officers in dealing with the students of Al-Istiqlal University from the viewpoint of the students themselves. In order to achieve the aim of the study, a tool was developed to measure the extent of the availability of human and self-skills by the training officers. The tool is a questionnaire which included (33) items distributed on two axes and six domains. The study was conducted on a random sample consisting of (225) male and female students from Al-Istiqlal University students. After collecting the data of the study, they were statistically treated by using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences program (SPSS). The study reached a number of results the most important of which was that the degree of the availability of human and self-skills by the training officers from the viewpoint of the students themselves was medium. The results also showed that there are no statistically significant differences at the significance level of ( α≤ 0.05) in the degree of the availability of the self and human skills by the training officers in the security apparatuses in dealing with the students of Al-Istiqlal University from the viewpoint of the students themselves which are due to the variable of gender, whereas there were statistically significant differences in the variable of the faculty in the axis of the self-skills in favour of the medium community college as compared with the faculty of human sciences and the faculty of administrative sciences. Also there were statistically significant differences in the variable of the study year level in all the axes of the study and the total degree in favour of the first year as compared with the students of the third and fourth years, and in favour of the second year over the third year.
