The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of commercial soybean seeds submitted to different concentrations of salicylic acid (SA), directly on germination paper and gerboxes for 24 hours. Seeds of cultivars NA 5909 RG and Tec Irga 6070 RR were soaked in salicylic acid solutions with concentrations of zero, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 μM. Seed imbibition occurred in two ways: (1) germination paper moistened with salicylic acid solutions; (2) imbibition of the seeds in salicylic acid solutions in gerbox boxes for 24 hours and subsequent sowing on germinated paper moistened with distilled water. On the fifth day after sowing, the number of normal seedlings (first count), length, fresh and dry mass of root and shoot were determined. It was concluded that the concentrations of SA between 250 and 750 μM can be used in soybean seeds, however, above 1000 μM may impair the parameters of physiological quality. The gerbox method for 24 hours provided the best results without the drastic reduction of the parameters in the lowest concentrations of SA.

Salicylic acid acts on several plant physiological processes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if salicylic acid interferes on the physiological quality of common bean seeds soaked with different concentrations by testing two seed imbibition methodologies. Common bean seeds of the cultivars Fepagro 26 and Predileto were utilized. The seeds were soaked in solutions of salicylic acid with concentrations of zero, 250, 500, 750, 1,000, 3,000 and 5,000 μM. Seed imbibition occurred in two ways: (1) germination paper moistened with salicylic acid solutions, and (2) seed imbibition in salicylic acid solutions in plastic boxes for 24 hours and subsequent sowing on germination paper moistened with distilled water. The experiment was maintained in a germination incubator under 25 °C temperature and with constant light. The number of normal seedlings (first count), length, fresh and dry matter of seedlings were determined on the fifth day after sowing. Germination percentage was assessed nine days after sowing. The study was performed in a completely randomized design with four replicates and 50 seeds were used for each treatment. Regression analysis was performed for salicylic acid concentrations, with no comparison of cultivars and seed imbibition methods. Salicylic acid in concentrations up to 1,000 μM does not negatively affect the common bean seed germination of the cultivars Fepagro 26 and Predileto, using seed soaking for 24 hours and imbibition in the germination paper. Concentrations of salicylic acid up to 1,000 μM and seed imbibition for 24 hours do not affect the vigor (first count) of the two common bean cultivars.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the sowing periods in production, productivity component and physiological quality of seeds of three soybean cultivars (TMG133RR, P98Y70RR and NS7670RR) in Orthic Quartzarenic Neosoil in the cerrado region. The design used was a randomized block a factorial scheme design with four repetitions, and each plot with useful space consisted of three rows of four meters length, spaced at 0.45 meters. Field evaluations were the final stand, the height of the plants, height of the first pod insertion, the mass of 100 seeds and productivity. Already in the lab seeds were evaluated for germination and vigor (first germination count, emergency, emergence speed index, length and dry mass of the aerial part of the plant and roots, electrical conductivity, accelerated aging and tetrazolium test). It concludes that it is possible to use Orthic Quartzarenic Neosoils, located in the Cerrado region at altitudes higher than 600 m, in years and places with good water distribution in the spring-summer seasons, for grain and soybeans production, but as a first goal, the crop should be sown in the first 20 days of November otherwise it should take place in early December.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of timbó seed coat on the physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds. Timbó seeds were collected from mature fruits in the Cerrado. The external layer of the seed coat was removed and crushed in a mill and used in the treatment of soybean seeds. Three lots of soybean seeds were used, from high, medium and low vigor seeds. The treatments were: powder; gel; hydroalcoholic extract; synthetic fungicide (Vitavax® - Thiram 200 sc), and untreated seeds. The physiological quality of the soybean seeds was determined by standard germination, accelerated aging, length, fresh and dry mass of seedlings. Blotter test was used to determine the sanitary quality. The statistical analyze used was a completely randomized 3 × 5 factorial design, considering three seed lots and five treatments. Treatment with the coat seed extract and gel improves the physiological quality of soybean seeds from low vigor lots. The treatment of seeds with gel decreases the incidence of Fusarium and Penicillium genus; and treatment with the powder reduced the incidence of the Cercospora genus.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to assess the variations in the parameters of the exudate pH and flooding tests to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds. We subjected the lots of soybean seeds to germination, emergence, exudate pH, and flooding tests. Further, water content of the seeds, first count of germination, and emergence speed index were also determined. The exudate pH test studied the variations in the soaking period and temperature, while the flooding test assessed the variations in the amount of water and temperature at different periods of immersion. The experiment design was completely randomized. The results were presented as means and were compared using the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient between the exudate pH and emergence of seedlings, and also between the flooding test result and emergence of seedlings were calculated. The results of the study indicated that the exudate pH test can be used to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds after 30 min of imbibition at 20 °C. Further, the flooding test was efficient in evaluating the vigor of soybean seeds after 4 h of immersion either in 50 mL of distilled water at 25 °C or in 75 mL of distilled water at 30 °C.

ABSTRACT Delayed harvesting may affect the physiological quality of soybean seeds, due to adverse conditions in the field. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds (BRS 820 RR® cultivar) harvested at eight periods (0; 5; 10; 15; 20; 25; 30; and 35 days after the R8 phenological stage - full maturity) and stored for two periods (0 and 8 months). The following evaluations were carried out: moisture content, germination and emergence rate, emergence speed index, total plant dry mass, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, mechanical damage, vigor and viability (tetrazolium) and sanitary quality of the seeds. The delayed harvesting of soybean seeds from 10 days after R8 impairs seed vigor and germination, in addition to increase the incidence of pathogens. Regardless of the harvesting period, the soybean seeds stored for eight months showed a reduction in their physiological quality, with an increase in the incidence of Phomopsis spp.

The electrical conductivity test is a quick, practical and objective test force; however, its effectiveness varies according to the species, quantity of seed, water volumes, soaking temperature, among other factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of P.moniliformis seeds lots by means of the electrical conductivity test, testing different methodologies. For this, two lots were tested in three quantities of time (25, 50 and 75 seeds) and nine soaking times (2, 4, 6 , 12, 24 , 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours) in three volumes of water (50, 75 and 100 mL) at 25 °C. To evaluate the initial quality of the lots, germination percentage, germination speed index, average time of germination, length and dry mass of seedlings were determined. The use of the electrical conductivity test of P. moniliformis seeds is recommended using 75 seeds in 75 mL of water for 2 hours at 25 °C or seeds in 50 mL distilled water with 50 seeds per 6 hours at 25 °C.

ABSTRACT Salinity is one of the problems that limit plant development, with the germination, growth, and initial establishment stages being the most sensitive to saline stress. Erythrina velutina, popularly known as “mulungu” in Brazil, is a species native to the Caatinga biome, which grows in conditions of soil rich in salts. The damage caused by salinity to the quality of its seeds and the use of techniques that mitigate such effects are little known. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate salicylic acid as a mitigator of saline stress in the physiological quality of mulungu seeds. The quality of two seed lots from two Brazilian states (L1: Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, and L2: Pentencostes, Ceará) was evaluated. A completely randomized design in a 2 (seed soaking with salicylic acid (SA) - distilled water and 1.0 mM SA) × 4 (electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw - 0.0, 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 dS m-1) factorial scheme with four replications of 50 seeds each was used. Saline stress reduces the quality of mulungu seeds and seedlings. SA increases the vigor of the seeds, promoting improvements in germination under saline conditions.

The use and incorporation of basalt powder in the soil have grown every year, and there are still no studies showing its effects on the physiological quality of soybean seeds. Thus, considering the importance of this response in the production system, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological condition of soybean seeds after applying different doses of basalt powder in the soil. The experimental design used was completely randomized in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, with three replications. The treatments consisted of three soybean cultivars, and four doses of basalt powder (0, 1, 3, and 5 t ha-1) produced in the 2018/2019 harvest in the region of Chapadão do Sul, MS. The tests carried out were: first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, dry mass of the upper plant and roots, and tetrazolium test (vigor, viability, mechanical damage, moisture, and bed bug damage). The results were submitted to the normality test and analysis of variance, followed by comparisons of means by the Tukey test at the level of 5% probability. The results showed for the first time the combined effects of both factors tested only on the variables: electrical conductivity, root length, vigor, viability, and mechanical damage. The response obtained was dependent on the cultivars evaluated, which differed for all measured characteristics.

To treat seed lots during the beneficiation process industrial seed treatment (TIS) has been used on seedlings. However, the actual TIS influence on the physiological quality of soybeans throughout storage is not yet known. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of TIS on the physiological quality of seeds of soybean cultivars during storage. Three soybean cultivars (M7110 IPRO, RR-8473RSF, M7739 IPRO) were subjected to four chemical treatment combinations (TIC-treated fungicide / insecticide): T1 - control; T2 - fungicide (Derosal Plus® - 200mL); T3 - insecticide (Cruiser ® - 500mL); T4 - a mixture of fungicide and insecticide products metalaxyl + thiabendazole + fludioxonil (MaximAdvanced - 200 mL) and thiamethoxam insecticide (Cruiser 350 FS - 500 mL). The samples were stored for a total of six months, with evaluation before storage and monthly throughout the storage period (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days). The seeds were stored in a cold chamber regulated at 12 ± 2 ºC and a relative humidity of 45± 2%. In addition to determining the water content, the following germination and vigor tests were performed: first count, seedling length, seedling dry mass and accelerated aging. A completely randomized design was used, in a 3 x 4 x 7 factorial scheme, with four replications. The data were initiallysubjected to analysis of variance, and later discriminated by the Tukey test (p < 0.05) (cultivars and chemical products) and regression (storage period). The work concludes that the use of insecticide favored the length of seedlings in cultivar RR-8473 RSF. Chemicals affected the quality and vigor of seeds in all studied cultivars. Soybean seeds can be stored with chemical treatment for commercial purposes for up to 60 days.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to assess the manner in which the presence of green soybean seeds affects their physiological quality. In this study, six lots of soybean seeds of cultivar 5958RSF IPRO with 0, 0, 7, 8, 16 and 18% of green seeds were examined. The tests done included the first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, field emergence, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, Tetrazolium, length, dry mass and seedling growth curve. Results were tested employing the normality test and analysis of variance, and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability level, employing the Rbio statistical program. Growth data were analyzed by the nonlinear regression analytical method, using the SigmaPlot 12.0 software. The viability and vigor of the greenish seeds were confirmed to reveal higher deterioration, proportional to the percentage of seeds in which the cotyledons had green pigmentation, indicating that the presence of chlorophyll caused the physiological quality of the soybean seeds to decrease.
