The influence of the housing system on selected production features of chickens of Ross 308 parent stock

The aim of the research was to analyse the effect of the housing system on selected reproductive traits of parental stock of Ross 308 meat chickens. The study was conducted on two flocks, one of which was kept in a chicken house on a concrete floor entirely covered with litter, and the second in a chicken house in which one-third of the floor was a plastic slated floor and the other two-thirds was a concrete floor covered with litter. During the 38-week laying period, an average of 179.7 eggs were obtained from laying hens kept in the chicken house with a litter floor, including 168.2 hatching eggs, and 187,4 and 175.6 eggs, respectively, from hens kept in the chicken house with a slatted/litter floor (differences not statistically confirmed). The housing system non-significantly influenced feed intake and the number of eggs laid depending on where they were laid (inside or outside the nest). In the litter system, eggs outside the nest accounted for 3.1% and in litter/slatted floor system 9.8% of the total number of eggs laid; the differences were statistically non-significant.

Broiler parent stock of 7851 Cobb-500, 8388 Ross and 8745 Hubbard-Hi-Yield were reared in controlled (slated cum floor system) house to determine the egg production performance, fertility and hatchability. A total of 151200 hatching eggs of Cobb-500, Ross and Hubbard-Hi-Yield broiler strain were collected and set in the incubator in 10 batches having 15120 eggs in each batch and 5040 eggs in each strain to compare fertility and hatchability among the strains. From the above study, it was observed that the strains had significant effect (P<0.01) on egg production, fertility and hatchability of fertile, and set eggs, abnormal chicks, egg and chick weight but there was no significant effect (P>0.05) on normal chick production and chick weight as percentage of egg weight. Hubbard-Hi-Yield strain was the best while Ross was intermediate and Cobb-500 was the poorest in terms of egg production, fertility and hatchability. Therefore, Hubbard-Hi-Yield broiler parent stocks as well as its grand parent stock may be more profitable and suitable for broiler production in Bangladesh.

Twelve ram lambs of the West African Forest type of between 15.7 and 24.6 kg were divided into four groups of 3 animals each. A group was assigned to one of four diets consisting of the following concentrate: grass hay ratios - 20 : 80 (A), 40 : 60 (B), 60 : 40 (C) and 80 : 20 (D). Feed intake, nutrient digestibilities and efficiency of feed utilization were measured. As the level of concentrate increased, the contents of crude protein ether extract, nitrogen-free extract (NFE) and gross energy of the diets increased, while the crude fibre and ash contents decreased almost linearly. Voluntary feed intake increased with increasing levels of concentrate, with diet C having a significantly higher (P 0.01) Relative Intake (RI) value than the other diets. Both the Nutritive Value Index (NVI) and Digestible Energy (DE) intake values were significantly higher (P. 0.01) in diets C and D than the other diets. Generally, the digestion coefficients for the gross energy, crude protein, crude fibre and nitrogen free extract increased with increasing levels of concentrate, the values being significantly higher (P 0.01) in diets C and D, while diet A showed a significantly lower (P 0.05) dry matter digestion coefficient value when compared with either diets. Although a similar trend was observed in the digestion coefficient for ether extract, the differences were not significant (P 0.05). With the exception of animals on diet C which had the highest daily weight gains, average daily weight gains and efficiency of feed utilization increased with successive substitution of concentrate for grass hay.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of different Marshal breed broiler on hatching egg weights on hatching characteristics and post-hatch performances; and also to compare the cost of production of hatchlings to table size. A total of 900 hatching eggs (HE) from 40 weeks old parent stock were sorted, graded and purposively grouped on weight basis into small (<50g), medium (50-65g) and large (>65g) sizes (3 groups). Each group was allotted 300 eggs and replicated thrice, with each replicate having 100 eggs in a complete randomised design before incubation for 21 days. Candling of incubated eggs was done on day 18 on group basis and numbers of fertile eggs noted. The chicks were individually weighed and counted to determine hatchability, hatchling weight and cost of production. Thereafter, hatched chicks were allotted into the respective groups and replicated to determine the post-hatch performance. Each replicate has 45 chicks, intensively raised and were fed ad libitum with broiler starter mash for the first 4 weeks of life and broiler finisher mash from 4-8 weeks. Data generated include feed intake, final weight, mortality; weight gain, feed conversion ratio and unit cost of production of chicken were calculated. The data were analyzed by GLM of SAS and Duncan’s multiple-range test was used to separate significance of differences among treatment means at 5% significance level. The medium HE had the best fertility (93.00%), hatchability (95.67%) and cost of producing a chick (N 90.07) when compared with the small and large HEs. The large HE has the best results in terms of, final weight and weight gain, while medium HE has the best FCR, lowest mortality and least cost of production, which are significant at p< 0.05. It is therefore recommended poultry breeders and hatchery operators should consider the use of medium weight (50-65g) HEs in their operations, so as to cut down the production cost.

This article proposes a new type of discrete connected precast reinforced concrete diaphragm floor system that consists of precast flat slabs and slab joint connectors. An experimental investigation of discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm under a vertical distributed static load was conducted, and the effect of slab joint connectors on the load-bearing capacity was evaluated. Then, a finite element analysis of discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm, precast reinforced concrete floors without slab connectors, and cast-in-situ reinforced concrete floor were performed to understand their working mechanism and determine the differences in load-bearing behavior. The results indicate that the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm increase considerably as the hairpin and cover plate hybrid slab joint connectors can efficiently connect adjacent precast slabs and enable them to work together under a vertical load by transmitting the shear and moment forces in the orthogonal slab laying direction. The deflection of discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm in orthogonal slab laying direction is mainly caused by the opening deformation of the slab joint and the rotational deformation of the precast slabs. This flexural deformation feature can provide reference for establishing the bending stiffness analytical model of discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm in orthogonal slab laying direction, which is vitally important for foundation of the vertical bearing capacity and deformation calculation method. The deflection and crack distribution patterns infer that the discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm processes the deformation characteristic of two-way slab floor, which can provide a basis for the theoretical analysis of discrete connected new-type precast reinforced concrete diaphragm.

The aim of this study was to verify the motivation of rabbit does to social contact or seclusion. The results of two different research activities assessed in Italy (experiment 1) and Germany (experiment 2) through the use of motivational cages are reported. In experiment 1, only the average time of occupation of the group or seclusion zone was recorded of four nulliparous does, while, in experiment 2, the group-housing system provided space for does with kits and consisted of four single areas (nest boxes with individual electronic nest box recognition systems). Experiment 1 showed that does spent a similar amount of time in seclusion or in group (49.61% vs 50.39%, respectively). On the contrary, in experiment 2, does with kits appeared to prefer spending time alone (71.90%) rather than in groups. The presence of kits probably stimulates a hierarchical and aggressive response of the dominant does, with the low-ranking does staying secluded to avoid violent interactions. In fact, in each reproductive cycle, one doe did stay in the group area whereas the other three does used this area in different percentages of time. Further researches are needed to find a good combination of the cage with the does’ physiological phases.

The associations between 15 preweaning traits in pigs were studied to determine which had the most important effects on litter weights at birth and weaning. The traits were litter size at birth and weaning, number born alive, percentage survival to birth and weaning, pig and litter weights at birth and weaning, daily gain from birth to weaning, gestation length, number of teats, weights of dam at farrowing and at weaning, and the change in dam weight during lactation. Of the 105 correlations, 66 were statistically significant, though many were markedly low. Litter weights at birth and weaning were significantly and relatively highly correlated with most of the other traits, whereas number of teats was correlated only with survival rates at birth and weaning and pig birth weight. The results showed that the importance of litter size was almost twice that of pig weight in determining litter weights at birth and weaning. The results in general indicated that most of the economically important traits related to swine reproductivity are favorably associated.

AbstractGenetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for farmed red deer on eight farms distributed throughout the United Kingdom. Genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) analysis. Heritabilities for date of calving were low on seven of the eight farms (< 0–05), while repeatabilities were low to moderate (0·06 to 0·37). Heritabilities of all weights tended to be moderate to high on most farms (0·31 to 0·49; 0·22 to 0·89; 0·33 to 0·48; 0·37 to 0·45 and 0·37 to 0·90 for birth weight, weaning weight, mid-winter weight, turn-out weight and other weights respectively). The exception was farm 8 for which heritability estimates were very low (<0·08). This is attributed to inbreeding effects on this farm. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between post-weaning traits tended to be high, indicating selection at any stage of growth will be expected to lead to an increased growth at the other stages. Animals whose bloodlines originated in the forests of Eastern Europe (Yugoslavia, Hungary, Germany) were heavier at all stages indicating their usefulness as ‘terminal sire’ breeds. Hinds of mainland ‘European’ parentage also tended to calve earlier.

The objective of this study was to evaluate hen performance and eggshell quality response to genotype, housing system, and feed calcium (Ca) level. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted on 360 laying hens of ISA Brown, Bovans Brown (commercial hybrids), and Moravia BSL (traditional Czech hybrid). Laying hens were kept in enriched cages and on littered floor and fed similar feed mixtures with different Ca content (3.00% vs. 3.50%). In terms of hen performance, ISA Brown had the highest egg production (84.2%) compared to Moravia BSL (74.3%) and Bovans Brown (71.4%). Regarding eggshell quality, Bovans Brown showed the highest values of all eggshell quality parameters. Increasing feed Ca level augmented egg production (p ≤ 0.001) but had no effect on other performance parameters. Except eggshell thickness, all eggshell quality parameters were affected by the three-way interaction of genotype, housing, and Ca. Bovans Brown, which had the strongest eggshells (5089 g/cm2) when housed on a littered floor system and fed 3.00% Ca, while Moravia BSL housed on a littered floor had the weakest eggshells (4236 g/cm2) at 3.50% Ca. The study pointed out the importance of the interactions between studied factors on performance and eggshell quality compared to an individual factor effect.

A 56 - day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate pineapple crush waste (PCW) as dietary fibre source in broiler diets. Five straight diets were formulated to contain the PCWat dietary levels of 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10.0% as replacement for wheat offal. One hundred and fifty (150), day-old "Anak 2000" broiler chicks were randomly allotted to the 5 diets containing three replicates per treatment with 10 chicks per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The final body weight, daily weight, daily feed intake and daily protein intake were generally higher in the birds fed diet 2 (2.5% PCW). There were significant (P<0.05) differences in daily feed intake and daily protein intake between the group on diet l and the other groups, while daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio were statistically the same (P >0.05) across the treatments. Digestible crude fibre values significantly (P < 0.05) decreased with increasing levels of PCW in the diets while the other digestibility percentages were comparable (P >0.05) in all dietary treatments. Values for the hematological parameters and blood serum chemistry did not deviate (P >0.05) statistically from established normal values for chicken. However, liver weights significantly increased (P < 0.05) across the dietary treatments while other organs observed did not differ significantly (P >0.05) in weight across the treatments. Cost per kg feed decreased as the level of PCW inclusion in the diets increased while the cost per kg weight gain showed that birds sed on diet 4 (7.5% PCW) were the most economical to produce. The results suggest that PCW could replace wheat offal in broiler diet up to 10.0% as a dietary fibre source without any deleterious effect.
