This paper is devoted to designing a fractional order Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) type sliding mode control method (FO-PIDSMC) for a non-linear liquid level coupled tank process system. By considering the individual advantages of the FO calculus and PID type SMC method, this proposed FO-PIDSMC technique is designed to integrate the FO calculus method with PID type SMC scheme to obtain an accurate and robust liquid level tracking in terms of the predefined reference trajectory. The real-time experimental results of the proposed controller suggest a dramatic improvement over the traditional process system controller methods in both trajectory tracking and required control action.

Abstract In this study, we examine the stabilization of fractional-order chaotic nonlinear dynamical systems with model uncertainties and external disturbances. We used the sliding mode controller by a new approach for controlling and stabilization of these systems. In this research, we replaced a continuous function with the sign function in the controller design and the sliding surface to suppress chattering and undesirable vibration effects. The advantages of the proposed control method are rapid convergence to the equilibrium point, the absence of chattering and unwanted oscillations, high resistance to uncertainties, and the possibility of applying this method to most fractional order chaotic systems. We applied the direct method of Lyapunov stability theory and the frequency distributed model to prove the stability of the slip surface and closed loop system. Finally, we simulated this method on two commonly used and practical chaotic systems and presented the results.

Single-stage voltage step-up inverters, such as the Dual Boost Inverter (DBI), have a large operating range imposed by the high step-up voltage ratio, which together with the converter of non-linearities, makes them a challenge to control. This is particularly the case for grid-connected applications, where several cascaded and independent control loops are necessary for each converter of the DBI. This paper presents a global current control method based on a combination of a linear proportional resonant controller and a non-linear sliding mode controller that simplifies the controller design and implementation. The proposed control method is validated using a grid-connected laboratory prototype. Experimental results show the correct performance of the controller and compliance with power quality standards.

A novel method of disturbance observer-based integral backstepping control is proposed for the two-tank liquid level system with external disturbances. The problem of external disturbances can be settled in this paper. Firstly, the mathematical model of the two-tank liquid level system is established based on fluid mechanics and principle of mass conservation. Secondly, an integral backstepping control strategy is designed in order to ensure liquid level tracking performance by making the tracking errors converge to zero in finite time. Thirdly, a disturbance observer is designed for the two-tank liquid level system with external disturbances. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment. By doing so, the simulation and experimental results prove that the scheme of disturbance observer-based integral backstepping control strategy can suppress external disturbances more effective than the disturbance observer-based sliding mode control method and has better dynamic and steady performance of the two-tank liquid level system.

In this study, a fractional-order sliding mode controller is effectively proposed to stabilize a nonlinear power system in a fixed time. State trajectories of a nonlinear power system show nonlinear behaviors on the angle and frequency of the generator, phase angle, and magnitude of the load voltage, which would seriously affect the safe and stable operation of the power grid. Therefore, fractional calculus is applied to design a fractional-order sliding mode controller which can effectively suppress the inherent chattering phenomenon in sliding mode control to make the nonlinear power system converge to the equilibrium point in a fixed time based on the fixed-time stability theory. Compared with the finite-time control method, the convergence time of the proposed fixed-time fractional-order sliding mode controller is not dependent on the initial conditions and can be exactly evaluated, thus overcoming the shortcomings of the finite-time control method. Finally, superior performances of the fractional-order sliding mode controller are effectively verified by comparing with the existing finite-time control methods and integral order sliding mode control through numerical simulations.

A second-order sliding mode (SOSM) controller is proposed to synchronize a class of incommensurate fractional-order chaotic systems with model uncertainties and external disturbances. Based on the chattering free SOSM control scheme, it can be rigorously proved that the dynamics of the synchronization error is globally asymptotically stable by using the Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller design approach.
