Iraqis experience interruptions of the public electricity supply of up to 18 hours a day. In response, private entrepreneurs and the Local Provincial Councils (LPCs) have installed an estimated 55,000–80,000 diesel generators, each rated typically between 100 and 500 kVA. The generators supply neighbourhoods through small, isolated distribution networks to operate lighting, fans and small appliances when power is not available from the public supply. A single radial live conductor connects each customer to the generator and payment for the electricity is based on a monthly charge per ampere. The operation and regulation of the neighbourhood diesel generator networks was reviewed through a comprehensive literature survey, site visits and interviews conducted with local operators and assemblers of the generator sets. The electricity is expensive, the generators can only supply small loads, have considerable environmental impact and the unusual single wire distribution practice is potentially hazardous. However, the use of the generators is likely to continue in the absence of any alternative electricity supply. The diesels and networks are poorly regulated and there is scope to enforce existing standards and develop a new standard to address the hazards of the connection practice. The chapter goes on to assess the possibilities of using small photovoltaic systems for power generation in Iraq.

Discourse is a series of sentences that relate and connect one proposition with the other propositions to from a unity. The main function of the news is not to warn, instruct, and make the public stunned, the main function of the news is to inform and then it is upto the public to utilize the news. There are two ways for the news to be useful to the public, the first to effort news as general knowledge and the second to effort the news a tool of social control. E-Ktp corruption cases are one of the biggest corruption cases that occurered in Indonesia. Therefore, many mass media reported heavilly on E-Ktp corruption cases, one of which was the kompas.com. furthermore, to find out how the writer gets the source the writer gets the source of data and information the writer uses the criminology visual method and then analyzes it using criminology newsmaking theory. However, the results of this study illustrate that the aspect highlighted are those of actors suspected of being involved in E-Ktp corruption cases. Where the media only emphasizes one institution, namely the people’s representative council, even though in this case the involved parties are not only the legislature but case the involved parties are not only the legislature but also from various institutions such as the interior ministry, state-owned enterprises, and private entrepreneurs. In the aspect of media projection Kompas.com make the bulk of the news about E- Ktp corruption cases as news headline and a tranding topic.

In 2004, a decision was made to perform a modernization and a new power uprate of unit 2 at Oskarshamn nuclear power plant in Sweden. Among the most important reasons for this decision were new safety regulations from Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and ageing of important components. A project was established and became the largest nuclear power modernization in the world. The modernization led to the need of analysing the auxiliary power system to ensure that it could supply the unit after the uprate, given tolerances on current, voltage and frequency. During the process of developing models for the diesel generator sets, it turned out that the suppliers could not deliver enough satisfactory material for modelling the diesel engines, the speed controllers and the magnetization systems. Therefore, Oskarshamn nuclear power plant with the help of the manufacturers of the diesel generator sets carried out additional measurements in order to collect data for modelling. Based on electric circuit diagrams provided by the manufacturers, block diagrams of the magnetization systems were made. For the speed controllers, no information was available at all so it was assumed that the controller was of PI-type. The parameters of the magnetization systems and the speed controllers were then tuned using the measurement results. Finally, a comparison between simulated results and the measurement results were made, showing good agreement. This is especially true in the most commonly used operating interval of the diesel generator sets.


Many times, Armed Forces are deployed in bases in remote areas on the borders or Islands, which are far flung areas away from mainland. In many such cases, these areas do not have their power requirements through the main grid supply and entire power requirement of the deployment is supplied by diesel generators. These diesel generators have high environmental impact due to emission of greenhouse gases and are highly uneconomical as logistic sustenance of remote bases for supply of fuel is very challenging, Fossil fuel has to be supplied by vehicles, helicopters, boats or manually carried to hill tops. This increases the overall cost of deploying armed forces in remote areas. In recent years with the advancements in power electronic components and renewable energy, development in Microgrids (MGs) have shown a way to reduce dependency on main power grids. Hence, with the help of MGs, renewable energy can be used to fulfill power requirements of the armed forces deployed in remote places. In this work, a MG with capacity of 1MW has been designed keeping the special needs of armed forces as a major consideration. Solar power has been used as a primary renewable energy source in the proposed design. In order to mitigate the adverse effects of meteorological and extreme conditions on the solar power generation capacity, energy storage system in the form of batteries has also been provided. Batteries store power when excess power is generated from the photo voltaic (PV) system and discharge the power when power demand is higher than the PV generated power. Diesel generator sets have also been used to run critical loads, provide reliability and as backup to critical operations catering for outages, night time needs and un-expected meteorological conditions. MATLAB has been used to design and simulate the proposed MG. Working of the MG has also been demonstrated for varying meteorological and varying load conditions as well. The proposed design works satisfactory in all cases.

In recent years, bisphenol analogues such as bisphenol S (BPS) have come to replace bisphenol A in food packaging and food containers, since bisphenol A (BPA) has been shown to leach into food and water, causing numerous negative health effects. Unfortunately, little or no research was done to determine the safety of these BPA-free products before they were marketed to the public as a healthier alternative. The latest studies have shown that some of these bisphenol analogues may be even more harmful than the original BPA in some situations. This article used a literature survey to investigate the bisphenol analogue BPS and compare it to BPA and other analogues with regards to increased obesity, metabolic disorders, cancer, and reproductive defects; among others. It was found that BPS works via different pathways than does BPA while causing equivalent obesogenic effects, such as activating preadipocytes, and that BPS was correlated with metabolic disorders, such as gestational diabetes, that BPA was not correlated with. BPS was also shown to be more toxic to the reproductive system than BPA and was shown to hormonally promote certain breast cancers at the same rate as BPA. Therefore, a strong argument may be made to regulate BPS in exactly the same manner as BPA.

Abstract Electric distribution utilities have an obligation to inform the public and government regulators about when they expect to complete service restoration after a major storm. In this study, we explore methods for calculating the estimated time of restoration (ETR) from weather impacts, defined as the time it will take for 99.5% of customers to be restored. Actual data from Storm Irene (2011), the October Nor’easter (2011) and Hurricane Sandy (2012) within the Eversource Energy-Connecticut service territory were used to calibrate and test the methods; data used included predicted outages, the peak number of customers affected, a ratio of how many outages a restoration crew can repair per day, and the count of crews working per day. Data known before a storm strikes (such as predicted outages and available crews) can be used to calculate ETR and support pre-storm allocation of crews and resources, while data available immediately after the storm passes (such as customers affected) can be used as motivation for securing or releasing crews to complete the restoration in a timely manner. Used together, the methods presented in this paper will help utilities provide a reasonable, data-driven ETR without relying solely on qualitative past experiences or instinct.

The power sector is a key target for reducing CO2 emissions. However, little attention has been paid to the sector’s vulnerability to climate change. This paper investigates the impacts of severe weather events and changes in climate variables on the power sector in developing countries, focusing on Indonesia as a country with growing electricity infrastructure, yet being vulnerable to natural hazards. We obtain empirical evidence concerning weather and climate impacts through interviews and focus group discussions with electric utilities along the electricity supply chain. These data are supplemented with reviews of utilities’ reports and published energy sector information. Our results indicate that severe weather events often cause disruptions in electricity supply—in the worst cases, even power outages. Weather-related power outages mainly occur due to failures in distribution networks. While severe weather events infrequently cause shutdowns of power plants, their impact magnitude is significant if it does occur. Meanwhile, transmission networks are susceptible to lightning strikes, which are the leading cause of the networks’ weather-related failures. We also present estimates of financial losses suffered by utilities due to weather-related power disruptions and highlights their adaptation responses to those disruptions.

Isolated power systems (IPSs) worldwide are traditionally powered by diesel generators that are very expensive to run and produce harmful emissions. In order to mitigate these problems, wind turbines are being introduced into existing IPSs. Although this integration has been reasonably effective at reducing running costs and emissions, high levels of wind penetration cause large system frequency variations, resulting in a prolonged synchronization process for newly dispatched diesel generators. Long synchronization can compromise the stability of a small IPS. This paper examines the diesel synchronization problem using a real IPS as a case study and offers a solution by introducing the concept of predictive synchronization based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy systems. Simulation results demonstrate a significant reduction in diesel generator synchronization times.

The diesel generator sets digital control system based on DSP is studied in this paper. The principles of voltage and speed control are analyzed. The main DSP chip is 16-bit fixed-point TMS320LF2407A. The hardware design, the former channels, the after channels and the CAN controller are accomplished in this paper. The simulation results indicate the controller has high-performance processing capabilities and it can meet the need of Generator Sets' real-time control and performance requirements.
