PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to find out whether a more specific stimulus, such as training which stimulates the production of power above 90% of Pmax (Pmax = maximal average concentric power output), is effective in enhancing the countermovement jump (CMJ) performance using the method of complex pairs or separate execution of the exercises in the complex pair (separate complex pair).METHODSThirty male students of the Faculty of Sports Studies were divided into 2 experimental (EX1, EX2) and 1 control group (CNTR). The experimental groups trained for 8 weeks using the complex training (CT) method twice a week with the same amount of repetitions for each exercise. The complex pair consisted of half-squat jumps with the intensity over 90% of Pmax and plyometric depth-jumps. EX1 trained using the complex pair method with the intracomplex rest interval of up to 15 seconds. EX2 trained all sets of the half-squat jumps first and then all sets of the plyometric exercise. We used non-parametric statistics and linear regression analysis to evaluate the effect on increasing the CMJ performance after the intervention program.RESULTSThere were no significant differences between the pre-test and post-test in any of the experimental groups (p > 0.05), although there were significant differences between the weeks in EX1 and EX2 (p < 0.05). The CMJ performance increased insignificantly (p > 0.05) each week by 0.14 cm in EX1 and by 0.07 cm in EX2.  CONCLUSIONThese results did not clearly show the application of the CT methods to be useful in enhancing the CMJ. In practice we recommend using the complex pairs to save training time and increase training intensity. However, an additional longer-term intervention experiment with a bigger sample size and groups randomized by the CMJ parameter (not by Pmax) is needed.

AbstractThe goal of this study was to assess the effects of a supervised slackline training program in a group of soccer players. Thirty-four male division I under-19 players (16.64 ± 0.81 years) agreed to participate in the study. They were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG). The first group (EG) followed a 6-week supervised slackline training program (3 sessions/week; 5-9 min/session), while the CG performed only regular soccer training. Several variables were assessed in all participants: acceleration (20-m sprint test), agility (90º turns test), jump performance (squat jump, countermovement jump), and postural control (Center of Pressure ( CoP) testing: length, area, speed, Xmean, Ymean, Xspeed, Yspeed, Xdeviation, Ydeviation). Ratings of perceived exertion and local muscle ratings of perceived exertions were also recorded after each slackline training session. At post-tests, there was a significant increase only in the EG in acceleration, agility, squat jump and countermovement jump performance, as well as several CoP variables: area in the bipedal support on a firm surface, and length, area and speed in the left leg on a firm surface. The program was rated as “somewhat hard” by the players, while quadriceps, gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior were the most exerted muscles while slacklining. In conclusion, slackline training can be an effective training tool for young, high-level soccer players.

Purpose: To describe and identify individual trends and changes in training load, neuromuscular readiness, and perceptual fatigue measures in 2 youth elite long jumpers, finalists at the European Athletics U18 (Under 18) Championships (athlete A, female, age 16.5 y, long-jump record 6.25 m; athlete B, male, age 16.0 y, long-jump record 7.28 m). Methods: Data were collected from both training sessions and athletics competitions during a 16-week period, divided into a preparation (weeks 1–8) and a competitive phase (weeks 9–16). Training load was computed through training diaries (training time, sprint, jumping, and weights volume). The countermovement jump and the 10-to-5 repeated-jump test were executed on a weekly basis to assess neuromuscular readiness, and perceptual fatigue measures were collected through a wellness questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted using a magnitude-based decisions approach. Results: The results highlighted a decrease in training load during the competitive period with moderate to large differences for training time, sprint, and jump volume. Moreover, data showed an upward trend and very likely higher scores in vertical-jump performance across the competitive phase together with a very likely lower perceptual fatigue. Conclusions: This scenario seemed to be favorable to achieve competition performance very close to the personal record during the competitive season. This study provided an example of application of a comprehensive monitoring system with young athletes involved in track-and-field jumping events.

Purpose: To examine the effect of a 10-week plyometric training (PT) on the kinematic and kinetic properties of prepubescent girls during squat jump, countermovement jump, and drop jumps. Methods: Twenty-four untrained girls (aged 9–11 y) were assigned to a training group (TG) and a control group. The TG followed twice a week PT for 10 weeks. Squat jump, countermovement jump, and drop jumps performed from heights of 20, 35, and 50 cm were tested before and after PT. Jump height, kinematic, and kinetic parameters were evaluated using a motion analysis system and a force plate. Results: Jumping height in all jump types increased significantly after PT for the TG (P < .001). After training, the TG presented increased power (P < .001) and knee angular velocity (P < .001), higher knee flexion at the deepest point during the braking phase (P < .001), longer contact time (P < .001), and unchanged stiffness and reaction strength index (P > .05). No differences were observed in the control group (P > .05). Conclusion: These findings indicate that a 10-week PT positively affected jumping performance in prepubescent girls who improved their drop jump performance after training not by adopting a stiff/bouncing jumping style of short contact time and increased stiffness, but a compliant/absorbing style of prolonged contact time.

Purpose. To compare the acute effects of two post activation potentiation (PAP) protocols using traditional or cluster-set configurations on countermovement jump (CMJ) performance. Methods. Twenty-six male basketball players were evaluated on three occasions separated by 72 hours. On the first session, athletes performed barbell squat jumps with progressively heavier loads to determine their individual optimum power loads. On the second and third sessions, athletes completed two PAP protocols in a randomized, counterbalanced order: 3 sets of 6 repetitions of squat jumps using optimum power loads performed with either a traditional (no inter-repetition rest) or a cluster-set (20 s rest every 2 repetitions) configurations. After a comprehensive warm-up, CMJ height was measured using a force platform before, 30 s, 4 min, and 8 min after completing the PAP protocols. Results. While at post-30 s athletes jumped lower compared to baseline in both conditions, jump heights were 0.71 cm higher following the cluster-set compared to the traditional condition (95% CI: 0.37, 1.05 cm). While athletes jumped higher compared to baseline at post-4 and post-8 min in both conditioning, jump heights were higher following the cluster-set compared to the traditional condition in post-4 min by 1.33 cm (95% CI: 1.02, 1.65 cm) and in post-8 min by 1.64 cm (95% CI: 1.41, 1.88 cm). Conclusions. Both traditional and cluster-set configurations induced a PAP response in vertical jump performance using optimum power loaded squat jumps, but the cluster-set configuration led to superior performance likely due to the reduced accumulation of muscular fatigue.

Objetivo. El propósito de la presente investigación fue determinar y comparar el efecto de un entrenamiento combinado de fuerza y pliometría en el rendimiento del salto vertical y en los parámetros de aplicación de fuerza, velocidad y desplazamiento del centro de gravedad durante el salto vertical. Material y método. Veinticinco jugadoras de baloncesto participaron en éste estudio y fueron asignadas de forma aleatoria a dos grupos: grupo entrenamiento y grupo control. El grupo de entrenamiento añadió a sus sesiones en pista 2 sesiones por semana de entrenamiento combinado: sentadilla profunda (50-65% de 1 repetición máxima de 3-6 repeticiones) y saltos repetidos (5-7 series de 5 saltos repetidos). El salto con contra-movimiento fue medido antes y después de las 6 semanas de entrenamiento. Resultados. Mejoras substanciales y probables fueron encontradas en la altura del salto vertical (12.2%). También se hallaron incrementos en la velocidad máxima durante el contramovimiento (14.0%), en la posición de máxima profundidad del centro de gravedad en la fase de bajada (10.9%). Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias en la fuerza máxima durante la fase de subida. Conclusión. Los resultados de este estudio muestran que el entrenamiento combinado mejora el rendimiento en el salto vertical en jugadoras de baloncesto y modifica el desplazamiento y las velocidades del centro de gravedad. Abstract. Purpose. The purpose of this investigation was determine and compare de effects of a combined plyometric and resistance training in the jump performance and the variables of force applied, velocity and displacement of the center of mass during the countermovement jump. Material and Method. Twenty five woman basketball players participated in this study and they were randomized assigned in two groups: a training group (n = 13) and a control group (n = 12). The training group performed 2 sessions per week of a combined plyometric and resistance training: deep squat (55-75% of 1RM of 3-6 repetitions) and jumps (5-7 series of 5 jumps). The countermovement jump was measured before and after 6 weeks of training. Results. The jump height showed a substantial increase after the training intervention (12.2%). In addition, the maximum velocity of the center of mass during the downward movement phase showed an increase (14.0). The crouch position was a 10.9% deeper after the training intervention. No differences were found in the force application variables of the countermovement when the training intervention ended. Conclusion. The outcomes of this investigation show that the combined training improve the jumping performance in women basketball players and modify the velocity and displacement of the center of mas during the countermovement jump.

Complex training is an exercise method that combines plyometrics with strength training. This exercise is an exercise used to increase muscle power. This study aims to determine the effect of training of complex training methods towards leg muscle power and arm muscle power for adolescent volleyball athletes. The method used in this study is an experiment with a control group pretest - post test design. Subjects in this study are 23 adolescent volleyball athletes (14-17 years old) with 12 males and 11 females, who are divided into two groups of experimental groups (n = 12) and control groups (n = 11) with randomized matched pair design based on the ranking of the vertical jump ability. Instrument used in this study is vertical jump test (leg power) and the medicine ball throw test (arm power). The data analysis technique uses the paired t-test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results show that training using a complex training method provides a good benefit in improving leg and arm muscle power. Therefore, this method is appropriate for used by adolescent volleyball athletes that have had experience of weight training in improving muscle power towards adolescent volleyball athletes

AbstractStrength training in hypoxia has been shown to enhance hypertrophy and function of skeletal muscle, however, the effects of plyometric training in hypoxia is relatively unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of plyometric training in hypoxia compared to normoxia on body composition, sprint and jump parameters. Twenty-three male physical education students (20.4±2.0 years, mean±SD) participated in the study and were divided into a plyometric training in hypoxia (PTH, n=8), plyometric training in normoxia (PTN, n=7) or control group (C, n=8). The PTH group trained in normobaric hypoxia (approximately 3536 m) 3 days/week for 8 weeks, while the PTN trained in normoxia. PTH induced significant improvements from baseline to post-testing in countermovement-jump (37.8±6.7 cm, 43.4±5.0 cm, p<0.05), squat-jump (35.4±6.2 cm, 41.1±5.7 cm, p<0.05), drop-jump height (32.8±6 cm, 38.1±6 cm, p<0.05) and 20-m sprint performance (3257.1±109.5 ms, 3145.8±83.6 ms, p<0.05); whereas PTN produced significant improvement only in countermovement-jump (37.3±4.8 cm, 40.5±4.5 cm, p<0.05) and 20-m sprint performance (3209.3±76.1 ms, 3126.6±100.4 ms, p<0.05). Plyometric training under hypoxic conditions induces greater improvement in some jump measures (drop-jump and squat-jump) compared to similar training in normoxia.

AbstractCompetitive cricket demands a high level of performance from fast bowlers. Ground reaction forces during the landing phase pose a risk for lower limb and lumbar spine injury. Good dynamic knee strength allows the knee to flex to absorb these forces and extend prior to ball release for maximum efficiency. Plyometric training has been shown to improve dynamic strength. There is a lack of literature on this subject for cricket. This study evaluated the effect of a combined plyometric and strength training program on isokinetic knee strength of fast bowlers. Forty-two professional fast bowlers were randomly assigned to a training group (n=21) and a control group (n=21). Both groups underwent isokinetic knee strength and vertical and standing broad-jump testing. Quadriceps and hamstring concentric and eccentric peak torques, bilateral strength asymmetries (BSAs), and dynamic control ratios (DCRs) were evaluated by isokinetic testing. The study group underwent 12 weeks of plyometric training, whereas the control group continued with their own training methods. The study group showed a significant improvement (p<0.05) in jump performance and eccentric strength. There was a reduction in the proportion of bowlers with poor BSA and DCR. Improving dynamic knee strength through plyometric training reduces injury risk and improves performance in cricket fast bowlers.

The effectiveness of two training methods was investigated in the training of a complex perceptual-motor skill. Subjects learned how to play a computer controlled video-game. In adaptive training, pacing of the game elements was the adaptive variable. In the part training condition subjects received training in four subtasks which were designed to train specific elements of the skill necessary for the performance of the task. A comparison of training time as well as performance at fixed time points against a control group indicated that the training manipulations were effective. The part training method was clearly the best. The adaptive training method yielded mixed results. However, some support for the effectiveness of the method was observed. The results are discussed in terms of the principles for design of training devices and programs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate of the acute effects of isoinertial resistance application on sprint, vertical and horizontal jump performance. Material: Volunteered 32 male students were divided into randomized experimental group and control group. Before and after 4-repetition maximal back squat with (for experimental group) or without isoinertial resistance application (for control group), 30 m sprint, vertical squat and countermovement jump tests with both legs, dominant leg, and non-dominant leg, standing broad jump and standing broad countermovement jump tests with both legs were assessed. Wilcoxon t test for pre- and post-test differences within the group, and Mann Whitney U test for pre- and post-test differences between the groups were used. Results: There were no significant differences within the group and between the groups for 30m both legs sprint parameters except pre-test mean stride length between the groups (Z=-2.27; p<0.02). Control group had a significant difference between pre- and post-test dominant leg vertical force (Z=-2.07; p<0.05). There were significant group differences in pre-test non-dominant leg countermovement jump (Z=-2.13; p<0.05), pre- and post-test non-dominant leg stride length (Z=-1.99 and Z=-2.28; p˂0.05, respectively). Conclusions: As a result of the effect of acute isoinertial resistance application to stride length especially to non-dominant stride length it is concluded that long-term isoinertial resistance training can support sprint performance with tolerating stride length imbalance between dominant leg and non-dominant leg.
