From Where Do We Speak? Enacting Justice with a Wound of Knowledge

In this article, the authors articulate the question “From where do we speak?” They explain the status of this question and then discuss the question “From where do the authors of the document Justice in the World speak?” They identify four reference points: a pneumatologic commitment, a perception of injustice, a belief in the Gospel basis of action on behalf of justice, and a recognition of self-involvement. This part of the text has been written by Clemens Sedmak. In the second part, they ask the question: “From where do we speak now?” After a few remarks on the climate crisis and the sexual abuse crisis, they focus on “the wounded sociality” of the present day. They explore the relationship between justice and this wounded sociality, taking the categories of social friendship and fraternity as points of reference (from Pope Francis’s encyclicals Laudato si’ and Fratelli tutti), and enter a conversation with three authors: Michael Sandel, Teresa Godwin Phelps, and Paul Ricoeur. This section has been authored by Mathias Nebel.

RESUMENEl trabajo examina críticamente la afirmación central de la hermenéutica de Paul Ricoeur, a saber, que el soporte material de la escritura es el rasgo determinante para que una secuencia discursiva sea considerada como un texto. La escritura cancela las condiciones fácticas de la enunciación y crea, de este modo, un ámbito de sentido estable en el que se puede validar una concepción de la subjetividad que está implicada en las dos estrategias de lecturas (el análisis estructural y la apropiación), esto es, un sujeto pasivo que se constituye por la idealidad del significado. In this paper we argue that to understand the difference Posthumanism makes to the relationship between archaeology, agency and ontology, several misconceptions need to be corrected. First, we emphasize that Posthumanism is multiple, with different elements, meaning any critique needs to be carefully targeted. The approach we advocate is a specifically Deleuzian and explicitly feminist approach to Posthumanism. Second, we examine the status of agency within Posthumanism and suggest that we may be better off thinking about affect. Third, we explore how the approach we advocate treats difference in new ways, not as a question of lack, or as difference ‘from’, but rather as a productive force in the world. Finally, we explore how Posthumanism allows us to re-position the role of the human in archaeology,

ABSTRACT: Jihad has been an integral part of Islamic discourse from its early days until today. This research was conducted to determine variations in the meaning of jihad that developed in Mulawarman University students. I use Paul Ricoeur's theory of Social Hermeneutics to explain how the process of interpreting meaning from a text. Ricoeur views that text has a life of its own regardless of the author's intention or intent (text autonomy). In interpreting the text, Ricoeur also argues that understanding and explanation are not two contradictory methods of interpreting the text. The workings of Paul Ricoeur's social hermeneutics include three factors, namely the world of text, the world of presenters, and the world of readers, whereas in this paper there are only two factors, namely the world of text and the world of readers. Jihad in al-Qur'an is repeated 41 times in 23 verses and by Ibn Al-Qayyim it is divided into four meanings, namely jihad against lust, jihad against Satan, jihad against infidels, and hypocrites, and jihad against injustice and wickedness. Meanwhile, readers only divide jihad into two meanings, namely jihad against lust and war jihad. In the process of interpreting, readers are greatly influenced by the trajectories of life that they have been through. This can be seen from the many meanings of jihad they express, namely war, defending, doing good, effort/strength, being serious, preaching, and enthusiasm. ABSTRAK: Jihad merupakan bagian integral wacana Islam sejak masa awal kedatangannya hingga sampai saat ini. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui variasi makna jihad yang berkembang pada Mahasiswa Universitas Mulawarman. Teori Paul Ricouer tentang Hermenutika Sosial saya gunakan untuk menjelaskan tentang bagaimana proses menafsir sebuah makna dari sebuah teks. Ricouer berpandangan bahwa teks memiliki kehidupannya sendiri terlepas dari intensi atau maksud pengarang (otonomi teks). Dalam menginterpretasi teks, Ricoeur juga berpendapat bahwa pemahaman dan penjelasan bukanlah dua metode yang bertentangan dalam menafsirkan teks. Cara kerja hermenutika sosial Paul Ricoeur mencakup tiga faktor yaitu dunia teks, dunia pemateri dan dunia pembaca sedangkan dalam tulisan ini hanya ada dua faktor yaitu dunia teks dan dunia pembaca. Jihad dalam al-Qur’an terulang 41 kali dalam 23 ayat dan oleh Ibn Al-Qayyim dibagi menjadi empat makna, yakni jihad melawan hawa nafsu, jihad melawan setan, jihad memerangi kaum kafir dan kaum munafik serta jihad melawan kezaliman dan kefasikan. Sedangkan pembaca hanya membagi jihad dalam dua makna yakni jihad melawan hawa nafsu dan jihad perang. Dalam proses penafsirannya, pembaca sangat dipengaruhi oleh trajektori kehidupan yang mereka pernah lalui. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari banyaknya makna jihad yang mereka ungkapkan, yaitu perang, membela, melakukan kebaikan, usaha/kekuatan, bersungguh-sungguh, dakwah serta semangat.

The past 20 years have seen a shift in Icelandic photography from postmodern aesthetics towards a more phenomenological perspective that explores the relationship between subjective and affective truth on the one hand, and the outside world on the other hand. Rather than telling a story about the world as it is or as the photographer wants it to appear, the focus is on communicating with the world, and with the viewer. The photograph is seen as a creative medium that can be used to reflect how we experience and make sense of the world, or how we are and dwell in the world. In this paper, I introduce the theme of poetic storytelling in the context of contemporary photography in Iceland and other Nordic Countries. Poetic storytelling is a term I have been developing to describe a certain lyrical way to use a photograph as a narrative medium in reaction to the climate crisis and to a general lack of relation to oneself and to the world in times of increased acceleration in the society. In my article I analyze works by a few leading Icelandic photographers (Katrín Elvarsdóttir, Heiða Helgadóttir and Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir) and put them in context with works by artists from Denmark (Joakim Eskildsen, Christina Capetillo and Astrid Kruse Jensen), Sweden (Helene Schmitz) and Finland (Hertta Kiiski) artists within the frame of poetic storytelling. Poetic storytelling is about a way to use a photograph as a narrative medium in an attempt to grasp a reality which is neither fully objective nor subjective, but rather a bit of both.

It is without doubt that the 21st century is marked by ever-present 24-hour media. Mobile phones, iPads, and Wi-Fi networks mean that many people in many different parts of the world are “connected” to each other and to global events as they happen in ways not really imagined less than a century ago. Of course the nature of this connectivity is variable. It dominates more in some parts of the world than others, in urban areas more than rural, among wealthier communities more than poorer ones, and perhaps among younger people more than older people. Such variations notwithstanding, it is the case that the minute-by-minute live reporting of events, as they happen, exposes the nature of those events to people not necessarily close to them or impacted by them, albeit vicariously. Such exposure means that people are potentially witnesses to events and images they would not otherwise have experience of. It is within this context this article considers the concepts of victim, witness, and the linkages between them. The concept of the witness has a varied history, from its presence in the law, to its connections with religious affiliation, to its legacy in experiences of atrocity. These different historical legacies are suggestive of different claims to victimhood. Simultaneously, these different claims to the status of victim (who constitutes a victim and under what conditions) have become conflated. In mapping the trajectories of each of these concepts, it is possible to discern considerable fuzziness in the relationship between victim and witness, suggestive of a continuum from the victim as witness to the witness as victim. Moreover, when these two concepts are put in such a relationship with each other, it is possible to observe how transgressive capacity takes its toll on people, how to make sense of the issues that concern them, and how best to respond to those concerns. This article considers the questions posed by the relationship between being a victim and being a witness, paying particular attention to who is and who is not considered to have a legitimate claim to victim status, and the role of ever-present media coverage in contributing to such claims and/or even creating them.

O artigo propõe situar a teoria do reconhecimento no pensamento de Paul Ricoeur. Com este objetivo o dividimos em duas partes. Na primeira seguimos o percurso do filósofo francês em seu projeto de construção de uma Antropologia Filosófica a partir da Filosofia da Reflexão de procedência cartesiana da Fenomenologia husserliana. Os impasses que daí decorrem o levam ao distanciamento da tentação solipsista das filosofias da consciência e à proposição de uma longa mediação pelo mundo do símbolo, dos textos e da ação. Por conseguinte, a ideia de reconhecimento está inscrita no próprio desenvolvimento do pensamento do filósofo. Na segunda parte reconstruímos o argumento do livro Percurso do reconhecimento por meio de seis temas fundamentais: os impasses da recognição; a saída da representação; a provação do desconhecimento; a reconstrução da identidade; o desafio da alteridade; a exigência da paz.Abstract: The article aims at presenting the theory of recognition in the thought of Paul Ricoeur. In order to do so, it is divided in two parts. The first follows the French philosopher in his project to construct a philosophical anthropology based on the Cartesian philosophy of Reflection as well as on the Husserlian phenomenology. However, both led him to an impasse that made him detach himself from the solipsist temptation of the philosophies of consciousness. Instead, he proposed an extended mediation that encompassed the world of symbols, texts and action. The idea of recognition is therefore embedded in the development of his thinking. The second part of this paper reconstructs the argument of Ricoeur’s book The course of recognition, through six fundamental themes: the obstacles of recognition; forsaking representation; “the test of the unrecognizable”; the reconstruction of identity; the challenge of otherness; the demand for peace.

Este trabalho ressalta a relação entre a razão e a experiência no campo de estudo da religião, mostrando suas transformações no contexto do desenvolvimento da filosofia da religião e dos paradigmas da razão. Aponta para a atual crítica à hegemonia da razão e o interesse crescente pelas demais dimensões do psiquismo, em particular através do desenvolvimento do método fenomenológico e de sua abordagem da experiência. Apresenta a renovação da atual fenomenologia francesa, que permite não apenas a revisão crítica do  racionalismo e do positivismo, como também a possibilidade de repensar a relação entre ciência, filosofia e religião. Focaliza os avanços da filosofia reflexiva de Jean Nabert e a contribuição da fenomenologia hermenêutica de Paul Ricoeur para uma nova concepção da filosofia da religião e da alteridade religiosa.Abstract: This work underlines the relationship between reason and experience in the field of religion studies, showing its transformations within the development of the philosophy of religion and the paradigms of reason. It points towards the current criticism concerning the hegemony of reason and towards the growing interest for other psychical dimensions, particularly through the development of the phenomenological method and its approach to experience This article also presents the current renewal of French phenomenology that allows not only the critical revision of rationalism and positivism, but also the possibility to rethink the relationship between philosophy, science and religion. It focuses on the advancements of Jean Nabert’s philosophy and on the contributions of Ricoeur’s hermeneutical phenomenology, leading to a new conception of the philosophy of religion and of religious otherness.

AbstractThis article by an Islamic scholar describes the principles governing international law and international relations from an Islamic viewpoint. After presenting the rules and principles governing international relations in the Islamic system, the author emphasizes the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States and the aspiration of Islam to peace and harmony. He goes on to explain the relationship between Muslims and others in peacetime or in the event of war and the classical jurisprudential division of the world into the abode of Islam (dar al-islam) and that of war (dar al-harb). Lastly he outlines the restrictions imposed upon warfare by Islamic Shari'a law which have attained the status of legal rules.

Resumo: O ensino da disciplina de Filosofia constitui no exercício/atividade filosófica na sala de aula, pois através desta atividade buscar-se-á criar, inventar, reinventar e produzir novos saberes e ações que se configurem como uma experiência filosófica. A experiência do filosofar proporciona uma maior flexibilidade entre o pensar e o agir, tendo como finalidade a constituição do si do alunado. Como praticamente a aula de Filosofia no Ensino Médio consiste numa aula expositiva, a relação entre professor e o aluno, entre aquele que “explica” e aquele que “compreende” sugere a busca de algo em comum: interpretar o texto. Por certo, o primeiro e mais elementar trabalho de interpretação é captar aquilo que o autor se propôs ao escrever determinado texto. Por esta razão buscamos investigar quais são as contribuições de uma hermenêutica no Ensino Médio, tendo como finalidade a busca de uma “ferramenta” (hermenêutica) que o professor possa oferecer para seu alunado, proporcionando-lhes um meio de compreender a eles mesmos e o mundo em que estão inseridos, o papel da hermenêutica e sua contribuição para a vida dos alunos é a de auxiliá-los na compreensão da realidade que eles vivenciam, para que possam desenvolver uma melhor vivência em sociedade. Abstract: The teaching of the discipline of Philosophy constitutes in the exercise/philosophical activity in the classroom, because through this activity will seek to create, invent, reinvent and produce new knowledge and actions that are configured as a philosophical experience. The experience of philosophizing provides a greater flexibility between thinking and acting, having as purpose the constitution of the student's self. As practically the Philosophy class in High School is an expositive class, the relationship between teacher and student, between the one who "explains" and the one who "understands" suggests the search for something in common: to interpret the text. Of course, the first and most elementary work of interpretation is to capture what the author proposed in writing a particular text. For this reason we seek to investigate the contributions of a hermeneutics in High School, aiming at the search for a "tool" (hermeneutics) that the teacher can offer to his / her student, providing them with a way to understand themselves and the the role of hermeneutics and their contribution to students' lives is to help them understand the reality they experience, so that they can develop a better experience in society. Paul Ricœur shared Emmanuel Mounier’s personalist and communitarian ideal of a universal community, which ensures that every human being has access to the conditions for self-development as a person. Whereas Mounier talks about communication as the structure of personhood that summons us towards the gradual enlargement of the community, Ricœur’s reflections on translation provide a missing link by referring, not just to the human capacity to communicate, but more specifically, to our capacity to translate and the implied ethics of linguistic hospitality. This allowed him to show that what enables us to enlarge the circle of brotherhood is the capacity to gradually settle in the world of the other and to welcome the other into one’s own world.
