A phenolic acid had been isolated from chloroform soluble fractions of a methanol extract of stem bark of Syzygium litorale, Fam. Myrtaceae. The structure of the isolated compound was elucidated and established as gallic acid through extensive spectroscopic studies (UV-Vis, FTIR, and NMR) and by comparison with literature data and authentic sample. This is the first report of the isolation of compound from this plant, although it has previously been found in Myrtaceae family such as S. aromaticum, S. cumini, S. polyanthum, S. cordatum, etc. The chloroform fraction, isolated compound, and vitamin C showed very strong antioxidant activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) with IC50 value of 23.2, 7.5, and 12.5 mg/mL, respectively.

Objectives: In sub-Saharan Africa, the therapeutic use of medicinal plants is of arousing interest. Reproductive disorders are a public health problem like everywhere else in the world. The population, especially in rural areas, uses medicinal plants for their beneficial effects. In Africa, the population uses these medicinal plants for their healthcare, including solving problems related to childbirth where there is an increase in the number of women known as “traditional birth attendants.” The effects of its medicinal plants relate to the various reproductive processes in women, from pregnancy to induction of labor, elimination of placental retention, and management of postpartum hemorrhage. To contribute to the enhancement of medicinal plants traditionally used in reproductive healthcare in Togo and to make information on their pharmacological effects available to the population, this work focused on the evaluation utero-relaxing and anti-free radical effects of extracts of Desmodium ramosissimum in the female rats of the Wistar strain. Material and Methods: The effects of hydro-ethanolic extracts of leaves, stem barks, and roots of D.ramosissimum were then tested on shreds Myometer of the female rats mounted in an organ vat and the antioxidant activity of these extracts tested was then determined. Results: The results show that hydro-ethanolic extracts from leaves, stem bark, and roots of D.ramosissimum cause a reduction in the frequency of spontaneous contractions of the uterine muscle. This reduction shows that these extracts have relaxing effects on the contraction of this muscle. The leaves extract showed better antioxidant activity compared to other extracts. Conclusion: This antioxidant activity is probably due to the phenolic constituents and its metabolites would be partly responsible for the pharmacological activities of D.ramosissimum. D.ramosissimum could thus be used to reduce uterine contractions in order to avoid Threats of Premature Labor.

Xylocarpus granatum is mangrove plant that traditionally used as face powder in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia which related to antioxidant, antiglycation and tyrosinase inhibition activities. This study aimed to evaluate the potency of X. granatum as a tyrosinase inhibitor, antiglycation, and antioxidant. The leaves, stem, stem bark, fruit flesh, fruit peel, and kernel of X. granatum were extracted using ethanol then their tyrosinase inhibition, antiglycation, and antioxidant were evaluated. Tyrosinase inhibition activity was evaluated using in vitro assay with L-tyrosine and L-DOPA as the substrate of monophenolase and diphenolase. Antiglycation activity was studied by measuring the excitation and emission fluorescence from glucose and fructose reaction with Bovine Serum Albumin. Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. The result showed that the ethanolic extract of fruit flesh has higher potency as tyrosinase inhibitor (IC50 of 393.8 mg/L and IC50 of 448 mg/L, respectively for monophenolase and diphenolase). Antiglycation assay showed that the ethanolic extract of stem bark provides the strongest antiglycation activity with an IC50 of 118.1 mg/L. Meanwhile, fruit peel provides the strongest antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 5.5 mg/L. Fractionation of ethanolic extracts of each part of X. granatum tree yield fractions with lower bioactivity compared to the crude extract. Moreover, stem extract and fractions from two different locations (Tarakan and Kendari) tend to have different bioactivities strengths.  The stem part of X granatum could be developed as new raw material of cosmetic product in Indonesia, while ethanol as the solvent for extraction, and the different bioactivity of stem extract from different location can be the consideration for the industry to standardize the extract prior to production of final product.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant potential ofLoranthus pulverulentus. Stem bark, leaves, and seeds ofLoranthus pulverulentuswere extracted in methanol:water (90 : 10) and partitioned with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol successively using partition chromatography. Total phenolic contents and antioxidant potential were checked using standard protocols. Total phenolic contents of all extracts were determined, using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, and ranged between 151 ± 2.1 and 396 ± 1.6 for stem bark, 137 ± 0.9 and 430 ± 2.2 for, and 39 ± 0.6 and 231 ± 1.7 for seeds. The antioxidant potential of extracts was evaluated; namely, DPPH, FRAP, and total antioxidant models. The ethyl acetate extract of stem-bark, leaves, and seeds showed the highest activity in DPPH (94.5 ± 2.1%, 96.30 ± 0.9%, and 92.30 ± 1.1%, IC5015.9 ± 0.5 μg, 14.5 ± 0.8, and 102.7 ± 1.3, resp.), FRAP (7.7 ± 0.6, 7.5 ± 0.7 and 6.6 ± 0.7, resp.), and total antioxidant (0.95 ± 0.09, 1.19 ± 0.09, and 0.686 ± 0.08, resp.). Strong correlations were observed between total phenols versus total antioxidant activity, DPPH, and FRAP withR2values ranging from 0.8185 to 0.9951 (stem-bark), 0.6728 to 0.8648 (leaves), and 0.8658 to 0.9910 (seed) which indicated that phenolic contents are the major constituents responsible for antioxidant activity.

The current study was designated to explore the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the methanolic extract of Magnolia champaca stem bark and its different fractions. Antioxidant activity was assessed using total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power, DPPH, hydroxyl and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against five gram positive and five gram negative bacteria using disc diffusion assay method. Among the different fractions, chloroform fraction (CHF) and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) showed the highest antioxidant activity whereas aqueous fraction (AQF) showed lowest activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay with IC50 of 12.12, 22.41 and 55.16 μg/ml, respectively. Both of the extracts CHF and EAF also exhibited highest total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity with concentration dependent manner when compared to standard BHT. Moderate to potent antibacterial activity was observed against all tested organisms compared to standard azithromycin. The results from the present study revealed that the different fractions of stem bark of M. champaca specially CHF and EAF possess antioxidant and antibacterial property which support its use in traditional medicine and suggesting that the plant may be further investigated to discover its pharmacologically active natural products. Gayam (Inocarpus fagiferus Fosb) is a tropical plant whose stem bark has been used as traditional medicine. This research aims to identify the flavonoides isolate from stem bark of gayam and identify the class of flavonoids compound as antioxidant. Extraction of 1000 g stem bark powder with 8500 mL of 96 % ethanol to yield 30 g concentrated ethanol extract. Partition of 15 g extract ethanol-water (7:3) with chloroform and n-buthanol to yield 1,5 g concentrated chloroform extract, 5,87 g concentrated n-buthanol extract and 5,63 g concentrated water extract. The flavonoids test using Wilstatter and Bate-Smith Matcalf reagent showed that n-buthanol and water extract contain flavonoids compounds. Antioxidant activity of flavonoids tested with DPPH method and lipid peroxide ammonium thiocyanate method showed that n-buthanol extract had antioxidant activity with IC50 of 24 ppm and n-buthanol extract has ability to inhibit the formation of lipid peroxide with inhibition value of 63,04 %. Separation of n-buthanol extract using thin layer chromatography preparative with chloroform as mobile phase and silica gel GF254 as stationary phase obtained four fractions. Flavonoids test showed that fraction F3 contained flavonoids compounds. FTIR analysis indicated that isolate had functional groups such as  -OH , C=O, C-O alcohol, C=C aromatic, C-H aromatic and C-H aliphatic. UV-vis spectra showed 2 peaks at ? 310 nm  and  261 nm which indicated flavonoids group of  isolfavone with hydroxyl groups at C-5 and  C-7. Antioxidant activity test with DPPH method showed that the isolate had antioxidant activity with IC50 of 1 ppm.
