The current study was designated to explore the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the methanolic extract of Magnolia champaca stem bark and its different fractions. Antioxidant activity was assessed using total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power, DPPH, hydroxyl and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against five gram positive and five gram negative bacteria using disc diffusion assay method. Among the different fractions, chloroform fraction (CHF) and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) showed the highest antioxidant activity whereas aqueous fraction (AQF) showed lowest activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay with IC50 of 12.12, 22.41 and 55.16 μg/ml, respectively. Both of the extracts CHF and EAF also exhibited highest total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity with concentration dependent manner when compared to standard BHT. Moderate to potent antibacterial activity was observed against all tested organisms compared to standard azithromycin. The results from the present study revealed that the different fractions of stem bark of M. champaca specially CHF and EAF possess antioxidant and antibacterial property which support its use in traditional medicine and suggesting that the plant may be further investigated to discover its pharmacologically active natural products. <p>As a common beverage, green tea is supposed to have beneficial health effect, such as antioxidant. At present, there are many green teas available in the market in Jakarta. Their quality, in their antioxidant activity, should be proved. This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of extracts of green tea products commercially available in Jakarta. Four green tea samples from different factories (coded as A, B, C, and D) were selected and macerated using methanol. DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity were used to measure the antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content (TPC) was also determined. The studied green teas had varied TPC from 23.80  to  84.03 mG GAE/g extract, ranked as B &gt; D &gt; A &gt; C. All samples exhibited various but strong antioxidant activity by DPPH assay, even better than standards ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). However, all extracts showed similar activities in their reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity, with activities less than standards.<strong> </strong>These findings confirm that the quality of the Indonesian commercial green teas were heterogeneous both in TPC or DPPH scavenging capacity. But, there is an indication that they are good as an antioxidant containing beverage. </p>

Avocado peel has been considered as a potential source of natural antioxidants in which phenolics are among the most important compounds. Therefore, this study aims to optimize the extraction process of phenolics using response surface methodology and evaluate the corresponding antioxidant activity. From the quadratic model, the optimal condition was determined including the ethanol concentration 54.55% (v/v), the solvent/solute ratio 71.82/1 (mL/g), temperature 53.03 oC and extraction time 99.09 min. The total phenolic content and the total antioxidant capacity at this condition with minor modifications were 26,74 ± 0,04 (mg GAE/g DW) and 188.06 ± 1.41 (mg AAE/g DW), respectively. The significant correlation between total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity was also confirmed. Antioxidant compounds play a significant role in preventing and scavenging free-radicals by reducing oxidative stress and providing protection to humans against degenerative diseases and infections. Obviously, antioxidant molecules of plant origin are pivotal to combat the oxidative harm in cells. Present work intended to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the fruits of Spondias pinnata. Methanol extracts of the fruits at two stages of maturity were prepared and investigated by various antioxidants analyses such as total antioxidant activity, reducing power and radical scavenging assays (DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide). Its total phenol, flavonoid and tannin contents were also determined. Spondias pinnata fruit extracts exhibited effective antioxidant activity and its IC50 values of the unripe fruits were 65, 66, 72.23, 83.25, 66.75 ?g/ml and ripe fruits were 124.24, 92.50, 97.66, 144.10, 72.25 ?g/ml, for total antioxidant activity, reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays respectively. The extracts, especially unripe fruit extract had good amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid contents which might contribute the antioxidant activities considerably. It is evident from the study that the fruits of S. pinnata possessed potent antioxidant activity and it can be considered as a good dietary choice among the underutilized fruits as well as common fruits. Therefore, wild mango may be a good choice of antioxidants of plant origin for dietary and pharmaceutical uses.

Modern civilization is facing more than hundreds of disorders associated with free radicals and natural antioxidants from non-edible plants are gaining importance to fight these disorders. The intention of this report is to evaluate a well known medicinal weed Ageratum conyzoides stems for its antioxidant and cytotoxic Effects. Antioxidant potentiality of the crude methanolic extract of the Ageratum conyzoides (AC) stems was investigated on DPPH scavenging activity, reducing ability, total antioxidant capacity as well as total phenolic contents. Cytotoxic study was done by brine shrimp lethality bioassay and vincristin sulphate was used as standard. The total phenols and total antioxidant capacity of AC was found to be 38.125 ± 2.01mg/g equivalent of gallic acid and 333.37 ± 4.22mg/gm equivalent of ascorbic acid, respectively. The percentage (%) scavenging of DPPH free radical of the extract was found to be concentration dependent with IC50 value 46.01 ± 2.23µg/ml while IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 29.56 ± 0.11?g/ml. The reducing power of AC was found to be concentration dependent. The cytotoxicity exhibited by AC was found promising with LC50 value 1.32?g/ml, comparing with the LC50 (0.689?g/ml) values of vincristin sulphate. Cedrus atlantica Manetti Tar was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, it was subjected to analyzes to know their total polyphenolic and condensed tannins contents, also their Ferric-reducing antioxidant power and Total antioxidant capacity. Chemical characterization identified 88 constituents where Himachalene and α-atlantone isomers (14.51 % - 4.07 %), Calacorene (3.52 %) and ar-Turmerone 3.35 %, were the major components, the total polyphenolic content and condensed tannins contents were 57.15 ± 0.15 milligrams equivalent of gallic acid /g tar and 4.41 ± 0.05 milligrams equivalent of catechin /g tar respectively .This extract showed remarkable Ferric-reducing antioxidant power with effective concentration equal to 50 ± 0.075 mg /mL ± 0,00028 and total antioxidant capacity equal to 262.75 mg equivalents of ascorbic acid /g tar ± 14,43. The experimental results indicated that our tar has promotive antioxidant activity.

Seven florally diversified Bangladeshi honey samples were assessed for their physicochemical properties as well as their antibiogram profile on different human pathogenic bacterial strains. The average density, total protein content, ascorbic acid content, total phenolics content and the total antioxidant capacity of these honeys were determined as 1.50±0.09 g/ml, 5.63±1.56 mg/g, 91.87±22.16 mg/g, 571.04±289.02 mg gallic acid equivalent/gram, and 320.74±55.06 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/gram of samples, respectively. A significant correlation between the phenolics content and the total antioxidant capacity was observed in commercially available honey samples. However, the natural honey samples showed the best antibacterial activity against different pathogenic multidrug-resistant bacterial strains. Significant antibacterial activities were observed against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas spp. and Enterobacter spp. and moderate antibacterial activities was observed on Shigella boydii, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus megaterium, and Bacillus subtilis. The antibacterial activity was correlated with the total antioxidant capacity. This study suggested that the Bangladeshi multifloral honeys have clinical potential against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains. One of the richest natural sources of resveratrol - the rhizome of Reynoutria japonica in East Asia is a well-known traditional herb (Hu zhang) used in various inflammatory diseases, infections, skin diseases, scald, hyperlipidemia. Although, it has been recently included in the European Pharmacopoeia, still in Europe is an untapped resource. Some of the therapeutic effects are likely to be influenced by its antioxidant properties and this in turn is frequently associated with a high stilbene content. However, some literatures suggested that other compounds than stilbenes may add to the total antioxidant capacity. Hence, the aim of this research was to examine rhizomes of R. japonica and less studied, morphologically similar species, R. sachalinensis and R. x bohemica for their phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity and to clarify the relationship between the antioxidant activity and compounds by statistical methods. HPLC/UV/ESI-MS studies of three Reynoutria species revealed 171 compounds comprising stilbenes, carbohydrates, procyanidins, flavan-3-ols, anthraquinones, phenylpropanoids, lignin oligomers, hydroxycinnamic acids, naphthalenes and their derivatives. Our studies confirmed the presence of procyanidins with high degree of polymerization, up to decamers in the rhizomes of R. japonica and brings new data on the presence of these compounds in other Reynoutria species. A procyanidin trimer digallate was described for the first time in the studied plants. Moreover, we suggested a presence of new for these species, dianthrone glycosides and previously unrecorded phenylpropanoid disaccharide esters and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, mainly in R. sachalinensis. Furthemore, compounds tentatively annotated as lignin oligomers were observed for the first time in studied species. The rhizomes of all Reynoutria species exhibited strong antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis demonstrated that proanthocyanidins should be considered as important contributors to the total antioxidant capacity.

Herbal medicines has been the most cost-effective and valuable medical practice to cure diseases and emphasize modern health care treatment. The present research was conducted to assess the biological activities of 10 fractions obtained from methanolic extract which was derived from dried seeds of Sesamum indicum. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging, total antioxidant capacity and total reducing power assays. Highest free radical scavenging activity (80.3 ± 1.36%), total antioxidant capacity (104.7 ± 4.04 μg AAE/mg) and ferric reducing power activity (238.76 ± 1.23 μg AAE/mg) was shown by fraction SE. Fraction SE showed the highest phenolic contents (63.72 ± 1.5 μg GAE/mg) while fraction SG sample showed highest flavonoid contents (54.62 ± 2.61 μg QE QE/mg). Antibacterial activity was performed against four selected bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogens and Bacillus subtilis. Highest inhibition was shown by fraction SD (11 ± 1.04 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus, fraction SH against Bacillus subtilis (11 ± 1.06 mm) and fraction SB against Escherichia coli. All fractions were found inactive against the selected fungal strains. While performing antileishmanial activity, fraction SC showed highest percent mortality (78%) of Leishmania tropica. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, fraction SG showed significant LD50 value (23.48 μg/mL).

The purpose of this study is to determine the total content of phenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins, as well as on the antioxidant activity of the extract, and their fractions were measured by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), phosphomolybdate reduction (or total antioxidant capacity), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The hydromethanolic extract of Salvia officinalis showed the highest values of total phenolic (176 mgGAE/g of extract) and condensed tannins (162.53 mgEC/g of extract) from the Boulemane and Khenifra regions, respectively. The results showed that the best DPPH assay was found in the ethyl acetate fraction of Salvia officinalis leaves of the Boulemane region (IC50 = 0.002 mg/ml). For the ethyl acetate and butanolic fractions of Salvia officinalis leaves, those collected from different regions have a better reducing capacity (EC50 = 0.021 mg/ml, respectively). For the total antioxidant capacity, the best activity was found in the aqueous fraction of Salvia officinalis leaves of the Boulemane region (108 mgGAE/g of extract). By the cyclic voltammetry method, hydromethanolic extract of Salvia officinalis leaves from the Boulemane region showed an important result (288.8 mgGAE/g). There was a positive correlation between total phenol content (TPC), condensed tannin content (TCT), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (r = 0.932, r = 0.896, respectively). The main compounds that have been identified in the hydromethanolic extract of Salvia officinalis are ascorbic acid, gallic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, tannic acid, and rutin. Due to their antioxidant property, the leaf extracts from Salvia officinalis are used as natural preservative ingredients in food and/or pharmaceutical industries.

Screening ‘new’ medicinal plants of traditional importance for bioactive components is a sure way of discovering novel therapeutic agents to treat diseases. This study, therefore investigated the presence of phytochemical, antioxidant and antibacterial components of the extracts of Lannea egregia. Phytochemical screening was done by standard methods. Antibacterial activity of the extracts of Lannea egregia was determined by agar well diffusion method while the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by agar dilution method. The antioxidant capacity of the crude extracts was determined through the evaluation of total flavonoid content, total phenolic content, ferric reducing power, total antioxidant capacity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl. The phytochemical screening of the different parts of this plant revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, emodins, phlobatannins, anthocyanins, coumarins and phenolics. Phlobatannins was observed to be absent in the stem bark. The crude extracts obtained from the leaves, stem bark and roots of this plant exhibited good antibacterial activity against typed strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The diameter of the zone of inhibition ranged from 9.0 to 26.0 mm at 100 mg/mL for all the plant parts. The ethyl acetate leaf extract of this plant possessed the highest antibacterial activity with MIC and MBC values of the range of (3.125 to ˃50 mg/mL) and (12.5 to ˃50 mg/mL) respectively. The zone inhibition of the chromatographic fractions of both plants ranged 15-23 mm. Antioxidant study of the extracts of the leaf of L. egregia revealed that the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts have good antioxidant potentials comparable to that of ascorbic acid control. This study has revealed that the extracts from different parts of L. egregia possess good antibacterial and antioxidant activities which could be a function of the various phytochemicals detected in the plant.
