The aims of this research are:(1) to find out whether the multiple-choice items of English summative test for the third grade junior high school students in Surakarta have fulfilled the criteria of good test or not; and (2)To describe whether the multiple-choice items of English summative test for the third grade junior high school students in Surakarta have fulfilled the criteria of good test item viewed from difficulty level, discrimination power, and distractor evaluation or not. The data were taken from 100 students‟ answer sheets in five schools in Surakarta. The test item was analyzed by using item analysis technique seen from the score and the language content analysis. The analysis was considered by using three aspects i.e. index of discriminating power, level of difficulty and the distractor evaluation. The research finding shows that (1) the difficulty level shows 13% for very difficult item, 22% for very easy item, and 64% for satisfactory item; (2) only 35% of all test items have appropriate index of discriminating power; and (3) only 49% of the distractors are effective since they were selected by the students. Based on the three criteria of a good test item above, there are only 46% of multiple choice items fulfilling the criteria of a good test items.

The Program of this meeting was composed of three papers on the following subjects: The Slide Rule in the Junior High School, The Slide Rule in the Senior High School, and The Slide Rule in the Junior College. The first paper advocated that the slide rule should be studied in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades. No explanation of the foundation principles of logarithms was mentioned, and only the simplest operations of multiplication, division, proportion, squares and square roots were explained. If the student starts to study an instrument when he is young, even though he doesn't understand all the reasons, he will be ready for the further study of the foundation principles upon which the slide rule is based when be gets to the senior high school and junior college. When the pupil begins the study of logarithms in the third year of high school then he will be ready to understand fully all the reasons for any procedure with the slide rule.

This research adapted the R&D model proposed by Borg and Gall (1983) with some modifications. The data was taken from students and teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Rejang Lebong, SMP Negeri 2 Rejang Lebong and SMP Negeri 5 Rejang Lebong through questionnaire and interview. The first result of this research shows that students like the existing folktales in students’ book but sometimes they found difficulties in comprehending it. The second result identifies three siutable local folktales suitable to be included in the students’ book; Legenda Batu Menangis (62.4%), Lalan Belek (66.7%) and Muning Raib (66.7%). The third result shows that the developed material can be used as supplementary reading material. In conclusion, the existing folktales in the student’s book are good but not contextual, there are highly three suitable local folktales to be included in students’ book (Legenda Batu Menangis, Lalan Belek, and Muning Raib) and the way to include the suitable local folktales in English students’ book is as supplementary reading material. As suggestion, the next researcher can conduct further study on evaluation by using try out of this material development.

Patterns generalization learning at the junior high school is more emphasis on the generalization of linear patterns. One problem in generalizing linear patterns is that students do not know the process of using trial and error strategies to generalize linear patterns. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to analyze the thought processes of 2 junior high school students who succeeded in generalizing linear patterns using trial and error strategies. The results show that there are two trial and error strategies that can be used to generalize linear patterns, namely: (1) Trial and error strategy by looking at the relationship of quantity consists of three steps. The first step is called relating, namely, the subject connects between the first term, the term in question, and difference. The second step is called searching, where the subject finds similarities by using addition and subtraction operations to obtain the nth term formula. The third step is called extending; the subject expands the pattern into more general structures by looking at the relationship between quantities. (2) Trial and error strategy by looking at patterns that consist of three steps. The first step is called relating, namely, the subject connects small positive integers by using arithmetic operations to obtain the first term and the second term. The second step is called searching, where the subject finds similarities by finding the formula for the first, second, and third terms. The third step is called extending, where the subject expands the pattern into more general structures by looking at the pattern that applies to the first, second, and third terms.
