Introduction. There is an increasing interest in the association between erectile dysfunction (ED) and cardiovascular risk factor. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is associated with insulin resistance, increased cardiometabolic risk, and coronary artery disease. Our aim was to investigate relationships between epicardial fat thickness (EFT) as a cardiometabolic risk factor and erectile dysfunction.Method. We selected 30 erectile dysfunction patients without comorbidities and 30 healthy individuals. IIEF-5 score was applied to all patients, and IIEF-5 score below 22 was considered as erectile dysfunction. EFT was measured by echocardiography.Results. Body mass index (BMI) was higher in ED patients than those without ED (28.19 ± 4.45 kg/m2versus23.84±2.36 kg/m2,P = 0.001, resp.). Waist circumstance (WC) was higher in ED patients than those without ED (106.60±5.90versus87.86 ± 14.51,P = 0.001, resp.). EFT was higher in ED patients compared to non-ED patients (0.49 ± 0.09 cm versus0.45 ± 0.03 cm,P = 0.016, resp.). There was positive correlation among BMI, WC, and EFT. There was negative correlation between EFT and IIEF-5 score (r : -0.632,P = 0.001).Conclusion. EAT, BMI, and WC as cardiometabolic risk factors were higher in erectile dysfunction patients.

Objective Several recent studies have shown that the aldosterone synthase gene ( CYP11B2) −344C/T polymorphism is related to cardiovascular diseases. However, whether the −344C allele influences the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Chinese patients with hypertension is unclear. Methods Chinese patients with essential hypertension were genotyped for the −344C/T polymorphism in CYP11B2 (n = 755; CC, n = 112; CT, n = 361; TT, n = 282) and followed for 11 years for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), including stroke, onset of coronary artery disease (CAD), and CAD-related death. Established cardiovascular risk factors were used to adjust the multivariate Cox analysis. Results After a mean follow-up period of 7.60 ± 1.12 years, a significantly higher incidence of MACEs was seen in patients with the CC genotype than in those with the CT and TT genotypes. The CC variant was significantly and independently predictive of MACEs (hazard ratio = 2.049), CAD (hazard ratio = 1.754), and stroke (hazard ratio = 2.588), but not CAD-related stroke or death. Conclusion The CYP11B2 −344 CC genotype is a risk factor for CAD and stroke, independent of other established cardiovascular risk factors in Chinese patients with hypertension.

Abstract Introduction: As outcomes of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have improved over the past decades, the fraction of patients surviving long-term is increasing. Information on long-term somatic and psycho-social health consequences of AML and its treatment is sparse. Previous studies suggested a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in AML survivors, especially those treated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT). The aim of our study was to perform a multi-dimensional analysis of health outcomes in AML long-term survivors (AML-LTS). This report focuses on somatic, especially cardiovascular, morbidity in AML-LTS. Overall and health-related quality of life are reported separately (Telzerow et al.). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including AML survivors who had been enrolled in clinical trials or the patient registry of the AML-CG study group and were alive ≥5 years after initial diagnosis. Data concerning somatic health status were collected through patient questionnaires, assessment by the patients' physicians, and medical and laboratory reports. An age- and sex-matched control cohort was derived from German population-based health surveys (Robert Koch Institute, DEGS1 survey; n=6013; persons diagnosed with leukemia [n=11] were excluded). Results: 427 AML-LTS, aged 28 to 93 years, participated in this study. Data on somatic health status is available for 355 survivors, 5 to 19 years after their AML diagnosis. Thirty-eight percent of survivors were treated with chemotherapy with or without an autologous transplant (autoHSCT), whereas 62% had undergone alloHSCT. Focusing on cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, we found that that 49% of AML-LTS had hypertension, 33% had hypercholesterolemia, 15% had type 1/2 diabetes, 10% had congestive heart failure (CHF), and 9% had coronary artery disease (Figure A). The mean body-mass index (BMI) of AML-LTS was 26.7, similar to the DEGS1 cohort (mean BMI, 26.8). Next, we compared the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors between AML-LTS and the general German population (represented by the DEGS1 sample), using multivariate models adjusting for age and sex (Table B). Compared to persons not diagnosed with leukemia, AML survivors had similar risks of hypertension, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction. Prevalence of diagnosed hypercholesterolemia was higher in AML-LTS compared to non-AML controls. In addition, AML-LTS had a 2-fold higher risk of having type 1/2 diabetes, and a 3.5-fold increased risk of CHF compared to the general population. To identify factors associated with the increased risks of diabetes and CHF among AML-LTS, we constructed multivariate models incorporating patient- and treatment related covariables (age, sex, BMI, smoking, prior AML relapse, treatment [chemotherapy + autoHSCT vs. alloHSCT], and type of leukemia [de novo versus secondary / therapy-related]). We found an increased risk of CHF for AML-LTS who had had a relapse (OR, 3.16; 95% CI: 1.46 - 6.83; P=0.004) and, in trend, for patients with sAML or tAML (OR 2.19; 95%CI: 0.92 - 5.22, P=0.076). In addition, we found an increased risk of type 1/2 diabetes for AML-LTS who are smokers (OR: 3.43; 95% CI: 1.43 - 8.21; p: 0.006). Disease- or treatment-related factors did not significantly associate with any of the other comorbidities we studied. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest analysis of somatic health outcomes in AML-LTS. Strengths of our study include the relatively large cohort representing a wide age range, the long follow-up period of 5 to nearly 20 years, and the heterogeneity regarding therapy regimens (chemotherapy + autoHSCT vs. alloHSCT). We found that, compared to the general population, AML-LTS have increased risks for CHF and diabetes, but not for hypertension or coronary artery disease. We identified AML relapse as a risk factor for the development of CHF, suggesting that cumulative chemotherapy exposure might be causally involved. On the other hand, we found no treatment- and disease-related risk factors that might explain the higher prevalence of diabetes in AML-LTS. Notably, AML-LTS who had undergone alloHSCT did not have increased risks of CHF, cardiovascular disease, hypertension or diabetes, compared to survivors treated with chemotherapy only. Our results may guide future recommendations for follow-up and inform personalized treatment decisions. Figure 1 Figure 1. This study aims to add to the knowledge about information depicted in television health programs in China. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in the country. The threat it poses is particularly notable among the Hui ethnic minority people, who have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. Little research has been conducted thus far on content concerning CVDs in Chinese television health programs, and this study aims to fill this lacuna. Qualitative content analysis was conducted to analyze The Doctor Is In and Health Body Light. The results revealed that these two programs presented information about what CVDs and CVRFs are, how the former are treated, and what strategies are used to communicate health information. A new topic also stood out: discussions on how traditional Chinese medicine prevents and cures these diseases.

Back ground: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major risk of death worldwide. Level of education about this important health problem is poor in our general population. Aims of this study was to find out simple knowledge about coronary disease, and to find the knowledge about risk factors, symptoms, complications and knowledge about prevention of coronary disease among the hospitalized patient who admitted to SSMS and Mitford Hospital and diagnosed as patients of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).Method: A pre tested questionnaire regarding assessment of level of knowledge about CAD was used to studied of the patients was admitted to SSMC and Mitford Hospital with the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome during the period April 2009 to October 2009.Result: Our study suggests that there is a lack of awareness among a sampled Bangladeshi population regarding CAD and its modifiable risk factors. We found that the low level of knowledge in the majority of patients, the rural and less educated patients had a lower level of knowledge. Conclusion: Our cardiac patients have poor knowledge regarding their disease; improvement of knowledge is needed through much education to prevent CAD.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jom.v14i2.19639 J Medicine 2013, 14(2): 119-122
