A Meta – Analysis of Experimental Research Studies on Mathematics Teaching

Objectives The aim of this integrative review is to accrue a comprehensive understanding of caring behavioral characteristics in the recruitment of older African-American adults into health-related research studies centered on chronic diseases. Methods Combined methodologies, Whittemore & Knafl and Kable, Pich & Maslin-Prothero in accordance with preferred items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis, were used to guide the data collection and to report the findings. The data were analyzed based upon recruitment categorization and Kristen Swanson’s middle-range theory of caring. Results Ten out of 260 publications comprised the final sample. They were analyzed and then aggregated by chronic illnesses, recruitment activities, contact level, and Swanson’s five caring behavioral concepts. Select cancers, diabetes, hypertension, and Alzheimer’s disease were the chronic illness foci of eight publications. Cardiovascular disease and stroke were the focus of two publications. Only three studies utilized all five Swanson’s caring concepts, and the frequently used concept throughout all 10 studies was enabling. Discussion Recruitment approaches employed to accrue older African-American adults into chronic illness-related research studies necessitate proactive recruitment strategies that incorporate caring behaviors. Future researchers ought to develop multi-modality recruitment strategies to improve older African-American adults’ representation.

The increased demand for evidence-based health care practices calls for comparative effectiveness research (CER), namely the generation and synthesis of research evidence to compare the benefits and harms of alternative methods of care. A significant contribution of CER is the systematic identification and synthesis of available research studies on a specific topic. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of methodological issues pertaining to systematic reviews and meta-analyses to be used by investigators with the purpose of conducting CER. A systematic review or meta-analysis is guided by a research protocol, which includes (a) the research question, (b) inclusion and exclusion criteria with respect to the target population and studies, © guidelines for obtaining relevant studies, (d) methods for data extraction and coding, (e) methods for data synthesis, and (f ) guidelines for reporting results and assessing for bias. This article presents an algorithm for generating evidence-based knowledge by systematically identifying, retrieving, and synthesizing large bodies of research studies. Recommendations for evaluating the strength of evidence, interpreting findings, and discussing clinical applicability are offered.

This study made use of Gene Glass Effect Size formula to estimate the mean effect sizes of the eleven (11) reviewed experimental research studies on the effect of experimental and conventional teaching and learning strategies to the academic performance of students in mathematics. A validated Inclusion Criteria was utilized in the selection of studies and a modified Methodology Appraisal Checklist was employed in the analysis of elements of the research problem and research methodology. The mean effect sizes and variances of the reviewed studies vary across the elements of the research problem and methodology, an indication that teaching and learning strategies are dependent on the quality of methodology used by the researcher. This study stressed that there is no enough evidence to prove that experimental teaching and learning strategies are more effective than conventional pedagogies in improving learnings in math, as the analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a p-value of 0.982 (critical value=0.05).

This chapter illustrates meta-analysis, which is a specific type of literature review, and more precisely a type of research synthesis, alongside traditional narrative reviews. Unlike in primary research, the unit of analysis of a meta-analysis is the results of individual studies. And unlike traditional reviews, meta-analysis only applies to: empirical research studies with quantitative findings hat are conceptually comparable and configured in similar statistical forms. What further distinguishes meta-analysis from other research syntheses is the method of synthesizing the results of studies — i.e. the use of statistics and, in particular, of effect sizes. An effect size represents the degree to which the phenomenon under study exists.

This article stresses the importance of controlling extraneous variables when studying educational problems. Various types of research studies are described. The experimental research design, which is ideally suited to detecting causal relationships if proper controls are used, and quasi-experimental procedures, which are employed when true experimental designs cannot be used, are discussed. Threats to internal validity are presented and hypothetical examples are given to illustrate these threats and the means of controlling them. The importance of utilizing control groups is illustrated.

The goals of this case study were to (1) analyze the role of innovative mathematics teaching approaches among middle and high school students regarding their hard and soft mathematical skills; (2) to examine students’ perceptions about the mathematical teaching approaches, used by their teachers during class sessions, (3) to analyze aspects of innovation in them. The descriptive case study approach was used to analyze the role of innovative teaching approaches in helping students to develop various mathematical hard and soft skills. A qualitative meta-analysis methodology was applied to ten student theses about mathematics teaching within the Department of Mathematics in the School of Postgraduate studies of IKIP Siliwangi in Cimahi. This paper presents the results based on ten graduate students’ theses research studies, selected purposively from 68 student theses. The selection of articles aimed to include a variety of theses discussing mathematics skills teaching and learning approaches. The results show that, in general, students who were trained with innovative teaching approaches attained higher grades than students taught by conventional teaching methods. It has been established that students’ grades on mathematical hard skills varied after intervention. On the contrary, regarding students mathematical soft skills, some theses reported no difference between students taught using both approaches, while some reported greater differences. Finally, students had good opinions regarding the innovative teaching-learning approaches, used by their teachers.
