Collaboration Between Administrators of National Secondary Schools and the Local Government Units (LGUs): Its Impact on the Schools’ Development

The collaboration between the Local Government Units (LGUs) and thenational secondary schools (NSS) of Misamis Oriental is seen as a need for the schools’ development. This study assessed the level of collaboration between the administrators of the 18 national secondary schools (NSS) and the localgovernment executives (LCE) in the 23 municipalities of Misamis Oriental fromthe calendar years 2007 to 2012. The instruments used were the questionnairesand interview on collaboration involving school administrators and the local chiefexecutives in Misamis Oriental. The questionnaire has a reliability coefficient ofr=.968 using Cronbach’s Alpha. The study adopted the across-stage mixed modelresearch as its statistical tool. The findings of the study showed that both localchief executives and school administrators are mature and responsible leaders intheir respective areas of responsibility. The assistance that the national secondaryschools received from LGUs are funded from the Special Education Fund (SEF)and the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA). The level of assistance in buildingpartnerships for collaboration LGUs provided to schools is high. This is a descriptive study which determined and analyzed the quality management practices of public secondary school heads. The study included the school heads and teachers in all Schools Division in Pangasinan. The identified quality management practicesare based on the parameters of APPES Manual. Kendall’s tau correlation coefficient was utilized to identify the significant relationship in the quality management practices of public secondary school heads to the performance of their respective schools. The researcher used questionnaire, interview and google form to gather the needed data. Same set of questionnaire was utilized for the teachers and school heads as respondents of this study. Findings of the study revealed that stakeholders were truly a great agent in improving the public secondary schools. Therefore, school heads must be eager to do this to have a strong partnership and participation of the stakeholders in the school. They contribute a lot for the direction leading to greater learning outcomes. Also, it was found out that weak correlation was hardly related to the quality management practices of the school heads with regard to the performance of their respective schools. Further, a proposed plan of action with regard to the indicators that were found out moderate would be presented to public secondary schools for them to better identify the risk and opportunities so to attain and maintain quality management practices of school heads and school perfomance in the Department of Education.

This research work investigated the attitude of Secondary School Teachers in the Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria towards Physical fitness for sports. The research design used for the study was the descriptive type of research. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two hundred (200) secondary school teachers selected from all the secondary schools in Secondary Schools in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The instrument for data collection for the study was a self-structured questionnaire. The instrument was subjected to a validity and reliability mechanism and it was found to be appropriate for the study. Four (4) research questions were raised and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The data collected were analysed using Chi-Square (X2) statistical analysis package. The findings of the study revealed that the disposition of secondary school teachers’ influences their attitude towards physical fitness programme and sports activities, the interest of secondary school teachers’ influences their attitude towards physical fitness programme and sports activities, availability of sports facilities influence the attitude of secondary school teachers’ toward physical fitness programme and sports activities and, secondary school teachers’ perception of health benefits of physical fitness influences their attitude towards physical fitness participation and sports activities in secondary schools in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. Based on the findings, appropriate conclusions and recommendations were made.

The study examined the influence of environment and gender on career choice among secondary school students in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna State. A descriptive research design was used and 18 secondary schools were clustered into three chiefdoms to draw a sample of 6 secondary schools using purposive sampling technique. Also, a sample of 422 students from a population of 3558 students from the three Chiefdoms was drawn using cluster sampling technique. The study developed and used a questionnaire tagged 'Environment, Gender and Career Choice Questionnaire (EGCCQ)' with correlation coefficient of 0.78. The students' career choice was based on the adoption of Career Interest Survey (CIS) and Vocational Interest Inventory (VII) developed by Bakare (1977). Descriptive statistics of simple percentage was used for the research question generated, while inferential statistics of multiple regression analysis was employed to analyse the null hypotheses developed for the study and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students had preferences for career choice based on gender and environment. There was a significant composite influence of environment and gender on career choice among secondary school students in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna State, with the influence of environment being relatively than that of gender. It is therefore recommended among others that students should be well counselled in the choice of career process by professional counsellors and they should take into consideration the immediate environment of the students, their gender, interest, ability, skills and personality.

Conflict is a reality in everyone’s life and it must be considered as a natural process that occurs daily. The study perceives that the conflict management styles of secondary school administrators are greatly dependent on the source of conflicts and identities of people in the educational environment. The process of exploring these perspectives will be a review of research and literature related to conflict managementin all facets of life especially in the school setting. The main objective of the study is to determine the conflict management styles of school administrators in the public secondary institutions in the province of Cagayan. The descriptive research design was used in the study. Research from a number of fields emphasized that several factors conspire to create environment where conflict is more likely to occur. However, this study views that if school administrator manifests a positive work value he or she is likely to perform better in the job as least occurrence of problems that could pave the way for collaborative efforts towards the attainment of organizationalgoals. Moreover, the data reveal that solution-oriented style of conflict management is perceived to be employed by more dynamic and democratic school administrators. In this context, future research should consider an investigation on the comparison of conflict management styles between private and public secondaryinstitutions to prove the existence of differences on styles in resolving conflicts when grouped according to school type.Keywords: Education, conflict, conflict management styles, solution-oriented style, descriptivedesign, Philippines

<p>The use of drama rehearsals as a tool for inculcating discipline among students had been investigated by a number of scholars and education practitioners on global, continental and regional levels. However notable that drama rehearsals as a tool for inculcating discipline could be overlooked as a result of its demands, such as time. Therefore, purpose of the study was to determine effectiveness of drama rehearsals as a strategy in the management of discipline in secondary schools in central region, Kenya. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population was 79 deputy principals, 79 drama teachers, and 1888 drama students and non-drama students in secondary school in Central Region, Kenya. Both the census technique and random sampling were used to get a representative sample size of 419 respondents. Data was collected from the respondents using pretested questionnaires and was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) and then interpreted. The study found that the relationship between drama rehearsals and management of discipline among secondary school students was significant. The study therefore recommended that there was need to for school administrators to facilitate more drama rehearsals in order to improve the levels of discipline among students. The study examined the impact of boarding Secondary Schools on students’ achievement in mathematics. The study was conducted in Ogbia Education Zone of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Two research questions and their corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. A post-test only of quasi- experimental research design was adopted. Furthermore, a purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 219 senior secondary school class 1 (SSS 1) mathematics students from a mixed model boarding secondary school. This school consisted of both boarding and day students. A Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was used to collect data from the students after a period of instruction that lasted for one full academic term. All data collected were analysed by the methods of mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The finding indicated that the establishment of the model boarding secondary schools by the Bayelsa State Government had a very significant impact on students’ achievement in mathematics. The study recommended that more model boarding secondary schools should be established by the Bayelsa State Government.

The purpose of the study was to investigate school administrators and teachers identification mechanism of students with behavioral problems in secondary schools. The research method was descriptive survey method and quantitative research design was used. The researcher used both primary and secondary data as a source. The primary data was gathered through questionnaire while the secondary sources were from written documents. Study populations were school administers (school principals, vice school principals and unit leaders) and teachers of secondary school of south west Ethiopia. The sampling technique used to draw sample from study population was multi stage random sampling technique. First stage 5 zones in south western Ethiopia were selected. On the second stage, from each zones 3 woredas/twon and one secondary school in each woredas were selected. The schools administers of selected schools were selected by purposive sampling and teachers were selected by random sampling techniques. All school administers of selected secondary schools 45 schools administers (school principals, vice school principals and unit leaders) selected purposively and 420 teachers selected by simple random sampling techniques. The instruments of data collection were Likert scale closed-ended self- administered questionnaire for teachers and school administers.To check the reliability of instrument pilot testing was conducted on 30 individuals. Cronbach alpha calculated result showed that reliability coefficient was 0.83. Validation of the instruments was done by using experts' review and discussion. Based on experts comments irrelevant items were discarded and some ambiguous items were modified. The current study was used quantitative methods of data analysis. The analysis of data was done using percentage, mean and standard division while analysis of qualitative data was done by thematic analysis methods. The result of the study indicated both teachers and school administers were not used standardized tools to identify student’s behavioral problem. The mean scores of teachers (M= 3.40 with Sd 1.24) and school administers (M= 4.10 with Sd=1.01) agreed that most of the time they identify students behavioral problems by office discipline and/or classroom minor behavioral records and attendance the methods. In addition, both teachers and school administers reported that they identified students behavioral problems based on information get from peers, other staff teachers and parents. Both teachers and school administers perceived that internalized behavioral problems such  initiation of aggressive behaviors, harassments, lack of empathy and externalized behavioral problems external behavioral problems such as frequent absences from school or poor performance in school, exhibits persistent patterns of stealing and lying. From these results, it was recommended that to reduce student’s behavioral problems the researcher recommended that the school principals, teachers and other stakeholders should set some sorts of rules and regulations specific to the school with the active involvement of the students, in addition to the rules and the regulations of the country.

AbstractThis research was commissioned by the (then) Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to provide recommendations on how to best support Western Australian (WA) secondary schools to engage in education for sustainability (EfS). The research aims were to identify barriers and benefits to being involved in EfS, the support systems required for schools to participate in EfS at secondary school level, and the difficulties that secondary schools experience when implementing EfS programs. A variety of research methods were utilised: semi-structured interviews with non-teaching stakeholders; online questionnaires for teachers, school administrators and students; focus groups and semi-structured interviews with teachers and school administrators; and an expert panel workshop to discuss data and recommendations prior to completion of a final report. Data were collected from 29 schools, 45 teachers and school administrators, 186 students, and various EfS external providers and stakeholders across metropolitan and regional WA. This article focuses on three issues identified in the data that we consider important and under-represented in discourses of EfS in Australia: lack of understanding about what EfS means among educators; lack of meaningful student involvement in EfS in secondary schools; and differing quality in EfS programs offered by external providers. We conclude this article by offering ways to improve EfS in WA secondary schools.

This study was on the impact of parents’ socio economic status on academic achievement of secondary schools agricultural students in Konsisha Local Government. Specific objectives for the study were: identify the impact of family structure on academic achievement of secondary school agricultural students in Konshisha Local Government, investigate the impact of parents’ educational background on academic achievement of secondary school agricultural students in Konshisha Local Government and ascertain the impact of parents’ income on academic achievement of secondary school agricultural students in Konshisha Local Government. Three research questions were raised and answered by the study. The design for the study was survey research design. Population for the study was 440 while purposive sampling technique was adopted for this study. A structured questionnaire titled: Parents’ Socio-economic Status Questionnaire (PSESQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts. Cronbach Alpha reliability method was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and a coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. All the administered copies of the questionnaire were retrieved and analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation and t – test. It was found out that academic achievement of students in secondary schools could be impacted by 4 family structures, 6 parents’ educational background and 6 impact of parents’ income on academic achievement of students in secondary schools. It was therefore, recommended that, Students from good socio economic background should use the opportunity to attain good academic heights, parents should provide basic school needs for their children to enable them attain good academic heights and parents should seek varying sources of income so that they can meet up with the school needs of their children.

This study examined organisational culture as a determinant of workers’ job commitment in public secondary schools in Ogun State. The  study adopted an ex-post facto design approach. The population consists of all workers (teaching and non-teaching staff) in secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. A multi-stage random sampling technique was adopted where five (5) public secondary schools (comprising of both junior and senior) were randomly selected from each of the local government area s from twenty (20) local government areas in Ogun State, making a total of ten (10) secondary schools were selected for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting ten (10) workers (teaching and non-teaching) from each junior and secondary  schools respectively, making a total number of twenty (20) workers from each of the selected ten (10) secondary schools. A total number of 200 workers was selected  for the  study. The  instrument  used for this study is a questionnaire which is sub-divided into three sections. Section A was used to collect information on personal characteristics of the respondents while Section B contained Workers Organisational Commitment Scale which was designed to measure workers’ job commitment. Section C contained Organisational Climate Index (OCI) and was used to measure organisational culture.  Data was analyzed using regression and T-test analysis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that organisational culture has significant relationship with public secondary school workers’ job commitment and that there was no significant difference in public secondary school workers’ job commitment between senior and junior school employees. It is concluded that organisational culture determines job commitment of public secondary school employees in Ogun State. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended  that motivation strategies should adopted to improve teachers’ salaries and promotions. Teachers should positively change their attitude s to work and view their job as more of a  call than a profession.
