This study assessed the bacterial quality of fresh fruit juices sold in some restaurants in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A total of twenty (20) fruit juice samples were collected from four (4) different types of fruit juices sold at four (4) different restaurants. The fruits that were used for this study are: Orange, Watermelon, Pineapple and Tiger nuts. Samples of the fruit juices were collected for bacteriological assessment using heterotrophic plate count and most probable number techniques, while CHRO Magar for E. coli and other coliforms was used for the detection of E. coli. The results showed that E. coli, Bacillus spp, Klebsiella spp, Streptococcus spp and Staphylococcus spp were present in the fruit juices. The results of the heterotrophic plate count showed that the bacterial count ranged from 2.7 x 102 (Orange) to 7.1 x 103 (Tiger nuts), while the results of the total coliform count ranged from 11 MPN/100 ml to 28 MPN/100 ml. However, the study revealed that the total E. coli count ranged from 0 to 7. The number of E. coli in each of the fruit juices and restaurants ranged from 6 to 13, Bacillus spp 12 to 19, Klebsiella spp 4 to 10, Streptococcus spp 6 to 11 and Staphylococcus spp 4 to 13. Bacillus spp had the highest percentage (31.4%), followed by Staphylococcus spp (20.1%). The highest percentage of bacteria was recovered from Tiger nuts (29.4%), followed by Watermelon (28.4%). Regular monitoring of the quality of fresh fruit juices sold in restaurants in Port Harcourt and other parts of Nigeria should therefore be enforced.

Due to delicious taste and readily availability, desserts are one of the most popular foods in Dhaka city. High amount of carbohydrate and protein in dessert items make them more susceptible to proliferation of microbial growth. Present study depicted a complete microbiological profile of some popular desserts such as, sweet, pastry, ice cream, pudding, falooda, yogurt and custard available in different food shop at Dhaka city, Bangladesh. All the samples were found to be contaminated with heterotrophic bacteria as well as fungi within the range of 103 to 106 cfu/g. In case of specific microflora, the growth of Staphylococcus spp., Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were observed in most of the samples indicates the poor quality of these products. Bioburdens of E. coli in sweet, pudding and yogurt were found in the range of 1.2×102 to 2.7×103 cfu/g. Salmonella spp., Shigella spp. and Vibrio spp. could not be isolated from any of the samples. Current study indicates that hygienic conditions should be maintained during preparation, packaging and retailing of dessert items in order to reduce the load of contamination in ready to eat foods which will ensure good health of consumers. Aim: This study seeks to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacteria isolated from surfaces of fitness machines at fitness center located at Elizade University and Akure town. Methods: Samples were collected from the different site of gym equipment including thread mill (handle, floor), bicep bench (handle), bike (handle, paddle), cruncher (handle, elbow) using sterile swab stick moistened with sterile buffered physiological solution. The swab sticks were immediately transferred to the laboratory for analysis. Standard microbiological techniques were used to identify the bacterial isolates. The antibiotic susceptibility profile of the isolates was determined by using standard antibiotics discs.  Results: Out of the 31 isolates identified, Staphylococcus aureus 12(38.7%) was the predominant bacteria followed by Bacillus spp. 11(35.5%), Klebsiella spp. 4(12.9%), E. coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus 2(6.45%) and Enterococcus spp. 1(3.23%). The susceptibility profile showed that all isolates were resistant to Amoxicillin (AM) and Augmentin (AU), Staphylococcus spp. isolated from different surfaces shows different susceptibility pattern to the used antibiotics, while Bacillus spp. Klebsiella spp. and E. coli also confer resistance to more than one commonly used antibiotic. Conclusion: The results showed the occurrence of potential pathogenic bacteria in which their presence on the equipment surfaces could easily be transmitted between users and to the environment generally. The spread of these potential pathogenic microorganisms in the fitness centre can be prevented through frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer as well as daily cleaning of equipment surfaces before and after activities with disinfectants.

Present study portrayed a complete microbiological profile of commonly available flowers including Rosa kordesii, Gladiolus hybrid, Acmella oleracea, Nyctanthes arbortristis and Pseudomussaenda flava which were randomly collected from Dhaka city, Bangladesh. The microbial contamination was quantified up to 108 cfu/g. Exploration of specific pathogenic bacteria was estimated within the range of 103 to 108 cfu/g of which Pseudomonas spp. was found in G. hybrid, A. oleracea and P. flava (~106 cfu/g), whereas Escherichia coli and Staphylococcal contamination was evident in almost all samples up to 108 cfu/g. The in vitro antimicrobial activities of the flower extracts were notable against most of the test bacteria. The ethanolic extracts of R. kordesii showed anti-bacterial activity against most of the bacteria except E. coli and Salmonella spp. G. hybrid extracts showed activity against Klebsiella spp. and Bacillus spp., A. oleracea against E. coli, Pseudomonas spp., Bacillus spp., Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Salmonella spp., P. flava against Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus spp., and N. arbortristis against Bacillus spp. The methanol extracts of G. hybrid possessed activity against E. coli, Listeria spp. and Pseudomonas spp., N. arbortristis extracts against E. coli, Vibrio spp., Bacillus spp., Klebsiella spp. and Staphylococcus spp., P. flava extracts against E. coli. The study was carried out on 50 vaginal secretions/aspirates/discharge samples collected aseptically using syringe and pipette method from infertile (anestrus; endometritic, n = 6 each) buffaloes of villages nearby Anand and healthy cyclic (n = 5; proestus, estrus, metestrus, diestrus) as well as 3, 6 and 9 month pregnant (n = 6 each) buffaloes of University farm to identify the vaginal microorganisms based on routine cultural examination. In all 117 bacterial isolates were recovered from all 50 vaginal samples (100 %) of 35 buffaloes during different physio-pathological status. The bacteria isolated from vaginal mucus/aspirates of buffaloes during the follicular phase comprised Corynebacterium spp. as the most predominant isolate (28.57%) followed by E. coli, Bacillus Spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Salmonella spp., Proteus spp., and vaginal yeast, whereas during the luteal phase, the most predominant bacteria were E. coli (23.33%) followed by Corynebacterium spp., Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Klebsiella spp. In acyclic buffaloes, the most predominant bacteria isolated were Corynebacterium spp. (21.43%) Bacillus spp., Micrococcus spp., Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., E. coli and Salmonella spp., whereas the endometritic buffaloes evinced the most predominant bacterial isolates as Corynebacterium spp. and E. coli (20.00% each) followed by Bacillus spp., Salmonella, Proteus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Klebsiella spp. The major bacteria isolated during the entire period of pregnancy were E. coli, Micrococcus, Corynbacterium Spp., Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Proteus. This study concludes rich bacterial diversity in the vagina of buffaloes during different physio-pathological status.


Domiati cheese is the most popular brand of cheese ripened in brine in the Middle East in terms of consumed quantities. This study was performed to investigate the impact of the microbiological quality of the used raw materials, the applied traditional processing techniques and ripening period on the quality and safety of the produced cheese. Three hundred random composite samples were collected from three factories at Fayoum Governorate, Egypt. Collected samples represent twenty-five each of: raw milk, table salt, calf rennet, microbial rennet, water, environmental air, whey, fresh cheese, ripened cheese & swabs from: worker hands; cheese molds and utensils; tanks. All samples were examined microbiologically for Standard Plate Count (SPC), coliforms count, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) count, total yeast & mould count, presence of E. coli, Salmonellae and Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). The mean value of SPC, coliforms, S. aureus and total yeast & mould counts ranged from (79×102 CFU/m3 for air to 13×108 CFU/g for fresh cheese), (7×102 MPN/ cm2 for tank swabs to 80×106 MPN/ml for raw milk), (9×102 CFU/g for salt to 69×106 CFU/g for fresh cheese) and (2×102 CFU/cm2 for hand swabs to 60×104 CFU/g for fresh cheese), respectively. Whereas, E. coli, Salmonella and L. monocytogenes failed to be detected in all examined samples. There were significant differences in all determined microbiological parameters (p ≤0.05) between fresh and ripened cheese which may be attributed to different adverse conditions such as water activity, pH, salt content and temperature carried out to improve the quality of the product.

Medicinal plants may be exposed to a wide range of microbial contamination during pre- and post- harvest stages and they can present high microbial counts. In this study, the microbial quality of 44 samples of dry herbs namely: mint (Menthaspp.), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), summer savory (Satureja hortensis), zataria (Zataria multiflora), Indian valerian (Valeriana wallichii), their brewing and extracts were analyzed. Total count using plate count agar medium (PCA), coliform count by Violet Red Bile Agar (VRBL), Enterobacteriacea by Violet Red Bile Glucose (VRBG) were evaluated. Medium Baird-Parker agar (BP) medium and Tryptone Bile X-Gluc (TBX) medium were used for the isolation and enumeration of Staphylococcus aurous and E. coli spp. respectively. Furthermore, Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate agar medium (XLD) and Bismuth Sulfite Agar medium(BSA) were used for detection of Salmonella spp. Fungal and mold contamination was assessed using yeast extract glucose chloramphenicol agar. The results showed that the contamination of the samples with total count (100%) and Enterobacteriaceae (85%), total coliform (83%), mold and yeast (98%) and E. coli ssp. (2.27) were detected, including in the study samples the absence of pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcus aurous, Salmonella spp. Moreover, the extract had a lower microbial load in comparison to dry herb samples. Also, the lowest and the highest of contamination rates were observed for Indian valerian and zataria, respectively. According to the results, there is a need to control the environmental conditions and improve hygiene in the production process; even more, it is recommended to choose a suitable decontamination method for disinfection during packing medicinal plants and during post-packing manipulation and transport.

Food hygiene is an important factor to protect ourselves from the contamination of germs and bacteria that enter through these food intermediaries. Food contaminated by bacteria will cause disease and can cause death if not treated immediately. Common bacteria that contaminate food are Salmonella thypii and Eschericia coli. Both types of bacteria are a group of gram-negative bacteria in the form of bacilli. This study aims to analyze and identify the bacteria S. thypii and E. coli found in corn ice samples. The study was conducted with a descriptive method by conducting a bacteriological examination to determine the quality of sample cleanliness. There are 3 stages in this study, the first stage is calculation of amount of total bacteria (total plate count), analysis of S. thypii and E. coli bacteria and identification with Gram staining. The results showed 40% of samples tested is positive for S. thypii and 60% for E. coli. The largest amount of total bacteria was shown by samples 1 and 3, which were 78 cfu and 52 cfu, respectively. The presence of S. thypii and E. coli bacteria in the sample is thought to be due to poor hygiene factors in the processing of the drink

Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are a significant concern for healthcare setups, as it increases the overall cost of treatment, patients stay in hospitals, making them susceptible to secondary and tertiary infections and, sometimes, mortality1. To prevent or control HAIs, evaluating the organisms isolated from the critically maintained areas is considered of epitome importance and everlasting practice in the healthcare industry. Identifying such organisms and screening them for antibiotic resistance is mandatory, but it also helps professionals understand colonization trends. Sensitive areas of healthcare setups were screened monthly from years 2017 to 2020. A total of 4400 samples of hospital hygiene, e.g., intravenous drip stands, ventilator surface, anesthetist’s trolley, patient’s bed, instrument trolley, etcetera, were collected. Isolated organisms were cultured and screened using the CLSI technique. E. coli, Pseudomonas spp., and Klebsiella spp. were found in both previous to COVID current samples. Multidrug-resistant organisms were subjected to molecular characterization to detect the presence of carbapenem genes. Evaluation data of both pre-and during Coronavirus Disease or COVID-19 were compared. The prevalence of pathogenic (Klebsiella spp., E. coli, and Pseudomonas spp.) and non-pathogenic (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus spp.) strains in healthcare setups decreased drastically (Klebsiella spp. from 80% to 20%, E.coli from 90% to 10% and Pseudomonas spp. from 80% to 20%). It is possible only because of the awareness in non-specialists and healthcare workers due to the unforeseen critical situation proving to be a blessing for the future generation.

Summary. Purpose of the reserche. To study changes in microflora and sensitivity of isolated strains to antibiotics using bacteriological research methods for intra-abdominal infections and peritonitis to determine their resistance when planning antibiotic therapy. Results and discussion. The paper presents data from a retrospective analysis of the results of studies of microflora and its resistance in intra-abdominal infections (IAI) and peritonitis for 2 periods: I period — from january 2007 to december 2008, II period — from january 2018 to december 2019. The difference between period II and I was in the increase in the number of individual pathogenic strains of microorganisms. Thus, the number of Klebsiella spp. increased from 13.8 % to 23.8 %, which in absolute number of their total number amounted to a 73.5 %, ranking second in the overall structure among pathogens sown in IAI and peritonitis. The number of strains of Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., Acinetobacter spp. has also increased by 2.4–5.8 % respectively. Among the strains Klebsiella spp., E. coli and Staphylococcus spp. the number of poly- and multi-polyresistant forms has increased. Thus, the number of such forms among Klebsiella spp. increased from 19.2 to 44.5 %, Staphylococcus spp. — from 43.8 to 67.1 % and E. coli from 18.2 to 23.5 %, respectively. Conclusions. Over the past 10 years, with IAI and peritonitis, the most significant changes were revealed on the part of pathogenic strains of Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Acinetobacter spp. Multidrug resistant strains were predominantly susceptible to carbapenems, semisynthetic ureidopenicillins, aminoglycosides, glycopeptides, oxazalidinones, phosphonoic acid derivatives. In the context of changes in the microbial landscape observed over the past decade, an increase in the number of poly- and multi-resistant forms of pathogenic microorganisms in IAI and peritonitis, the choice of antibiotics for rational therapy should be based solely on bacterioscopy and antibiograms.

Objectives: To determine the level of bacterial contamination in food (Panipuri) available in market of Janakpur, Dhanusha, Nepal. Methods: Total 120 samples of Panipuri (60 solid matters and 60 masalaa Pani) collected aseptically from the market were transported to the microbiology laboratory and processed for microbial count by serial dilution technique. Microbial load and presence of pathogen were detected in each sample. Results: Analysis of the food samples revealed that 70% of Panipuri samples had high loads of bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella spp, Pseudomonas spp, Bacillus spp.  Conclusion: This study depicted that the street vended food Panipuri of Janakpur are highly contaminated with pathogenic bacteria which can cause health risk to consumers. Thus, it is suggested that regular monitoring of the quality of street foods must be practiced to avoid any food bone illness in future.
