Aims: Previously conventional substrates consisting of topsoil mixtures have produced low yield and low survival rate of the tissue culture plantlets. Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponics (SAH) technique is being compared with Sawdust (SD) and Topsoil (TS) as a suitable method of acclimatization and further rooting of the plantlets. This research is aimed at optimizing the protocol for acclimatization of tissue culture pineapple plantlets. Study Design: Experimental Research Design. Place and Duration of Study: The experiment was conducted at the Biotechnology Research Unit, Tissue Culture Laboratory, National Horticultural Research Institute, Jericho-Idi-Ishin, Ibadan. Feb 2021 – April 2021. Methodology: The technique employed was a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 10 samples per treatment in 6 replicates. 5 treatments were investigated in this research. Data analysis was done with the use of SAS statistical analysis software (p<0.05). Fresh crowns of Ananas comosus (pineapple) were extracted and were cultivated in test tubes containing full MS media. The plantlets were sub-cultured twice, after which they were taken into the hardening chamber. The plantlets were acclimatized in the Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponics substrate and other substrates – Topsoil(TS), Sawdust(SD), Sawdust + Topsoil (3:1), and Sawdust + Topsoil (1:3). Results: The result shows that the mean difference in Plant Height and Root Length for SAH substrate was significant as against other substrates used in this study (p<0.05) with SAH having the highest value of 3.50cm for plant height and 2.53cm for root length. A 100% survival rate was observed for the plantlets grown SAH media as compared to the ones acclimatized on Topsoil and Sawdust combinations which showed a 50% survival rate. There was no significant difference in the number of leaves among all the groups of substrates. Conclusion: In conclusion, SAH media is a very effective media for the hardening and acclimatization of micro-propagated plantlets.

Planting with a lane system in palm sugar and cacao plants is a technique of plantation cultivation that aims at soil conservation and microenvironment. Plant cultivation in the field needs to get a supply of fertilizer to increase crop productivity. This study aims to determine the effect of giving SP-36 and KCl fertilizer to the best growth of sugar palm and cacao plants in the planting of path systems. The research was conducted on land in Badak Mekar Village, Muara Badak District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan. The research method used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) and repeated 4 times. Factorial experiments consisted of 2 factors, as the first factor was SP-36 fertilizer (p) consisting of 3 levels: p0 = 0 kg plant-1 (control); p1 = 0.25 kg of plant-1; p2 = 0.5 kg of plant-1. The second factor was KCl (k) fertilizer consisting of 3 levels: k0 = 0 kg plant-1 (control); k1 = 0.25 kg of plant-1; k2 = 0.5 kg of plant-1. The variables observed included: (1) Arenaceous plants: increase in caudal circumference, increase in the fifth midrib length, increase in the number of midribs, increase in number of leaflets on the fifth midrib and (2) Cocoa plants: increase in plant height, increase in stem circumference, the number of cocoa fruits, the intensity of pest and disease attacks on cocoa fruit. Observations on each variable were carried out at 3 and 6 months after treatment (mat). Data were analyzed by variance and if there were significant differences, it was followed by the Smallest Significant Difference Test (LSD) at the level of 5%. The results of the SP-36 fertilizer treatment showed very significant differences in all observation variables in early maturing palm trees and aged 3 bsp and 6 bsp cacao plants. The treatment of SP-36 fertilizer at a dose of 0.5 kg plant-1 (p2) gave the best growth of early maturing sugar palm plant 6 in the increase of the fifth midrib length, increase in bulb circumference, increase the number of midribs and increase the number of leaflets on the fifth midrib - each 137.17 cm, 25.58 cm, 3.25 strands and 39.08 strands. Likewise in the age of 6 bsp cocoa plants SP-36 fertilizer with a dose of 0.5 kg plant-1 (p2) gave the best growth in plant height increase, increase in stem circumference and number of cocoa fruit, each 18.92 cm, 8.25 cm and 25.25 pieces. The treatment of KCl fertilizer and the interaction between SP-36 and KCl fertilizers showed no significant difference in all observation variables in early maturing and cacao plants. Observations of pest and disease attacks on cocoa fruit with the intensity of pest attacks 0.00-23.47% were included in the category of minor damage and the intensity of disease attacks 0.00-66.30% which fall into the category of moderate damage.

The aim of this study was to determine the concentration and exposure time to NaCl suitable for the micropropagation of banana, through the analysis of growth traits. Banana propagules were inoculated in MS medium with different concentrations of NaCl (0; 50; 75 and 100 mM) for 120 days (multiplication and rooting, 60 days each), with monthly subcultures. These propagules were measured for plant height, number of leaves, sprouting rate, average number of formed propagules, rooting rate, root length and survival rate. After 30 days, NaCl reduced sprouting rate at multiplication; the number of leaves, rooting rate and root length in rooting; and the height and propagules number in both phases. After 60 days, the NaCl affected the sprouting rate and propagules number in the multiplication; length of root in rooting; and the height and number of leaves in both phases. After 120 days, the reduction in the survival rate was proportional to the increase of NaCl in the medium. Thus, it is concluded that NaCl reduces most of the growth traits and the treatments with 75 and 100 mM NaCl affected multiplication and in vitro rooting more intensely.

Hitherto, there is scarcity of information on the usefulness of neglected small corms and cormels of cocoyam in the South West Nigeria. A 9 (nine) months trial was conducted to compare the growth and yield performance of different types of cocoyam planting materials with treatment consisting of T1; sprouted small cocoyam cormels, T2, trimmed out lower parts of harvested cocoyam corm and T3; moderate sized corm of 50-100g (control) arranged in a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Data on the number of leaves and plant height was taking at 4 week interval for 24 weeks while data on number and weight of harvested cormels was taking at 9 months after planting (MAP). The data collected were subjected to a univariate General Linear Model (GLM) two ways Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using IBM SPSS software statistical package 21. Significance mean differences were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that the highest mean number of leaves and plant height was obtained from treatment T1 (10.22) and T2 (92.83) respectively at 24 weeks after planting (WAP). While both treatment T1 and T3 collectively had the highest number of consumable cormels (54.0) in which treatment T3 weighed the highest (3.202 kg). There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in both the number of leaves produced and plant height among the different cocoyam planting materials utilised at 24 (WAP). Similarly, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the number and weight of cormels produced by the different treatments at 9 months after planting (MAP). The study therefore concluded that both sprouted small cocoyam cormels, trimmed out corms during planting compared favourably with moderate sized corm of weight 50-100g commonly used as planting material in term of yield potential and therefore recommended to be schedule for demonstration to cocoyam farmers in the study area for adoption.

Water stress in sweet corn plants due effect of climatic events, such as El Niño, is difficult to monitor, leading to considerable losses. Silicon (Si) as an exogenous resistance elicitor may reduce water stress effects. The relationship between sweet corn plant age and its development, under induced water stress and leaf potassium silicate applications were evaluated. This work was carried out with the hybrid Tropical Plus®, in a randomized factorial block design with 15, 30, 45 and 60 kPa as soil water tensions in plots and potassium silicate doses (0, 6, 12 and 24 L ha-1) in subplots. Stem diameter, plant height and leaf number per plant were evaluated at 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after seeding. Root length was measured on the 90th day after seeding. Sweet corn plants submitted to water stress conditions and Si application showed an age-dependent response. Water stress did not decrease stem diameter, plant height and number of leaves per plant sprayed with Si. Root length was longer with 60 kPa soil water tension. Silicon reduced negative impacts of water stress on sweet corn plants.

There is significant variation in yield of storage roots and vines of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) among farmers due to use of different cutting positions and pruning of vines at different levels. This study was carried out to establish the cutting position and the vine pruning level that give the best yield of both the storage roots and vines. The study was conducted in a 3x3 factorial arrangement in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatments included cutting position at three levels (apical cutting, middle cutting and basal cutting) and pruning at three levels, 0%, 25% and 50% respectively. Pruning was done. 50 days after planting. And storage root harvesting was done 100 days after planting. The two measurements were summed up to give the total vine weight. Storage root length, diameter and weight were measured at 100 DAP. Storage root length indicated significant difference (P<0.05) only among cutting positions with highest mean length (16.20 cm) obtained from apical cutting and the lowest (11.98 cm) from basal cutting. Storage root diameter, storage root weight and vine weight indicated significant interaction (P<0.05) of cutting position and vine pruning level. Highest mean root diameter and root weight were obtained from middle cutting and 25% vine pruning level, with the lowest being obtained from basal cutting and 50% vine pruning level. Highest vine weight was recorded from middle cutting and 50% vine pruning level, with the lowest being recorded from basal cutting and 0% vine pruning level. Both middle and apical stem cuttings can be recommended for higher storage root and vine yield. Vine pruning at 25% can be adopted for higher storage root yield while pruning at 50% can be suggested for higher vine yield.
