Abstract We present a new approach to study the one-dimensional Dirac equation in the background of a position-dependent mass m. Taking the Fermi velocity vf to be a local variable, we explore the resulting structure of the coupled equations and arrive at an interesting constraint of m turning out to be the inverse square of vf. We address several solvable systems that include the free particle, shifted harmonic oscillator, Coulomb and nonpolynomial potentials. In particular, in the supersymmetric quantum mechanics context, the upper partner of the effective potential yields a new form for an inverse quadratic functional choice of the Fermi velocity.

Abstract Within the framework of kinetic theory, the nonlinear interaction of electromagnetic waves (EMWs) with a degenerate electron-ion plasma is studied to account for the electron quantum mechanical effects. For this purpose, a specific quantum regime is considered, for which the degenerate electron Fermi velocity is assumed to be taken of the order of group velocity of EMWs. This eventually leads to the existence of nonlinear Landau damping rate for the EMWs in the presence of electron Ponderomotive force. The electrons-ion density oscillations may be arisen from the nonlinear interaction of EMWs, leading to a new type of nonlinear Schrödinger equation in terms of a complex amplitude for electromagnetic pump wave. The profiles of nonlinear damping rate reveal that EMWs become less damped for increasing the quantum tunnelling effects. The electrostatic response for the linear electrostatic waves is also investigated and derived a linear dispersion for the ion-acoustic damping rate. The latter is a direct function of electron Fermi speed and does not rely on the Bohm tunneling effect. The obtained results are numerically analyzed for the two microwaves of different harmonics in the context of nonrelativistic astrophysical dense plasma environments, e.g., white dwarfs, where the electron quantum corrections cannot be ignored.

The quantum effects in plasmas can be described by the hydrodynamics containing the continuity and Euler equations. However, novel quantum phenomena are found via the extended set of hydrodynamic equations, where the pressure evolution equation and the pressure flux third-rank tensor evolution equation are included. These give the quantum corrections to the Coulomb interaction. The spectra of the Langmuir waves and the spin-electron acoustic waves are calculated. The application of the pressure evolution equation ensures that the contribution of pressure in the Langmuir wave spectrum is proportional to $(3/5)v_{\textrm {Fe}}^{2}$ rather than $(1/3)v_{\textrm {Fe}}^{2}$ , where $v_{\textrm {Fe}}$ is the Fermi velocity.

Abstract The relativistic massless charge carriers with a Fermi velocity of about c/300 in graphene enable us to realize two distinct types of resonances (c, the speed of light in vacuum). One is electron whispering-gallery mode in graphene quantum dots arising from the Klein tunneling of the massless Dirac fermions. The other is atomic collapse state, which has never been observed in experiment with real atoms due to the difficulty of producing heavy nuclei with charge Z > 170, however, can be realized near a Coulomb impurity in graphene with a charge Z ≥ 1 because of the “small” velocity of the Dirac excitations. Here, unexpectedly, we demonstrate that both the electron whispering-gallery modes and atomic collapse states coexist in graphene/WSe2 heterostructure quantum dots due to the Coulomb-like potential near their edges. By applying a perpendicular magnetic field, evolution from the atomic collapse states to unusual Landau levels in the collapse regime are explored for the first time.

AbstractA large non-saturating magnetoresistance has been observed in several nonmagnetic topological Weyl semi-metals with high mobility of charge carriers at the Fermi energy. However, ferromagnetic systems rarely display a large magnetoresistance because of localized electrons in heavy d bands with a low Fermi velocity. Here, we report a large linear non-saturating magnetoresistance and high mobility in ferromagnetic MnBi. MnBi, unlike conventional ferromagnets, exhibits a large linear non-saturating magnetoresistance of 5000% under a pulsed field of 70 T. The electrons and holes’ mobilities are both 5000 cm2V−1s−1 at 2 K, which are one of the highest for ferromagnetic materials. These phenomena are due to the spin-polarised Bi 6p band’s sharp dispersion with a small effective mass. Our study provides an approach to achieve high mobility in ferromagnetic systems with a high Curie temperature, which is advantageous for topological spintronics.
