The aim of the study was to examine the role of self-esteem in resisting the influence of materialistic goals of four social role models (mother, father, peers, and media) in adolescents (aged 13–16). Previous studies showed a negative correlation between the psychological health of teens and striving for materialistic goals, one of the main sources is the social modeling of materialism. Two studies were carried out. The first, correlational study, was conducted on target teens and their mothers, fathers, and peers of their choice. It examined if self-esteem is a moderator of the relationship between the materialism of social role models (mothers, fathers, peers, and media) and the materialism of teens. The second, experimental study, was conducted on target teens only. It examined how boosting the self-esteem of teens and activating materialism of social role models (mothers, fathers, peers, and media) may affect the materialism of teens. Study 1 showed a significant interaction effect of self-esteem and the materialism of peers on the materialism of teens. The interaction effects of self-esteem and other role models (parents and media) were not significant. Study 2 showed that elevated self-esteem lowered the influence of the materialism of peers on the materialism of teens. The results were not significant when other role models (parents and media) were analyzed. The results obtained in the presented studies indicate that the self-esteem of teens may have an important role in resisting the influence of materialism role models of peers. Practical implications of the studies for the psychological health of teens are also discussed.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between social modeling and children’s involvement in physical activities (CIPA) involvement. Descriptive-correlation analysis was utilized to determine the respondents’ profile and the CIPA. Correlation analyses were used to examine relationships between key variables, modelling, and CIPA among 200 randomly selected Grades 1 to 6 pupils in selected randomly private and public schools in the Division of Iligan City. Likert Scale and Inferential Statistics were used to measure the level of self-reported responses. Results showed that all the models influenced the PA, coach ranked first with 88.5% most influential, while peers ranked second 83.5%, parents ranked third 77%, while the lowest influence were teachers 59% which could mean that coach had the highest influence, while teachers were the least influential models. Furthermore, among all the models, Coach Modelling had the closest relationship with the PA involvement. Surprisingly, parents who were supposed to be the first models at home, were not that influential on CIPA because they were too busy doing other things at home or outside their homes, not sports and physical activities.

Young prisoners’ health needs represent a matter of constant importance for any prison administration. These are addressed through direct medical services, as well as through other activities of health promotion. If the medical services are provided by trained medical staff, health promotion is usually provided by non-medical staff, such as social workers, psychologists, educators etc. Also, because healthy behaviors are best promoted through social modeling, such activities require the involvement of all prison staff, including non-specialists such as guardians. Thus, for health promotion to be effective it needs to be approached by the whole prison staff, meaning that the medical and non-medical specialists, as well as other prison staff need to have a common understanding of young prisoners health needs and to work as a team. This can be done through prison staff training. The article addresses these issues by summarizing the Indonesia country reports of the project “Health Promotion for Young Prisoners” funded in the framework of the Public Health Program.

Vietnamese higher education has been dealing with increasing student enrollment and that will likely continue for some time. Employers are reporting not being satisfied with the quality of workers they are getting from the pool of university graduates and want employees to be more autonomous. Likewise, students also need to learn how to study more independently outside of the classroom. To help students develop the skills they need, higher education institutions should put the burden of learning onto the student rather than on the already overloaded teaching staff. Social modeling, from social cognitive theory, can be combined with technology to change student learning-related behavior as this randomized control trial with 309 undergraduate students shows. The behaviors which were under study included student interactions with the university’s learning management system (LMS). Comparing the interactions with the LMS between the treatment and control groups shows a weekly report can be successful in motivating students to change their behavior. With the recent worldwide requirement of remote learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students will naturally interact with the LMS more than before. This will provide additional data to the system allowing clearer identification of the behaviors that lead to top-performing students.
