The present study focuses on determining the phyto-treatment efficiency for treatment of moderately saline wastewater using organic raw materials, such as rice husk, coconut husk, rice straw, and charcoal. The moderately saline wastewater with total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration up to 6143.33 ± 5.77 mg/L was applied to the lysimeters at the rate of 200 m3 ha–1 day–1 in five different lysimeter treatments planted with Eucalyptus camaldulensis (T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5). T1 was a control without any filter bedding material, whereas rice straw, rice husk, coconut husk, and charcoal were used as filter bedding materials in the T2, T3, T4, and T5 treatment systems, respectively. Each treatment showed significant treatment efficiency wherein T3 had the highest removal efficiency of 76.21% followed by T4 (67.57%), T5 (65.18%), T2 (46.46%), and T1 (45.5%). T3 and T4 also showed higher salt accumulation, such as sodium (Na) and potassium (K). Further, the pollution load in terms of TDS and chemical and biological oxygen demand significantly reduced from leachate in the T3 and T4 treatments in comparison with other treatments. Parameters of the soil, such as electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium percentage, and cation exchange capacity did not show values corresponding to high salinity or sodic soils, and therefore, no adverse impact on soil was observed in the present study. Also, Eucalyptus camaldulensis plant species showed good response to wastewater treatment in terms of growth parameters, such as root/shoot weight and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) uptake, plant height, biomass, and chlorophyll content. Root and shoot dry weight were in the order T3 (51.2 and 44.6 g)>T4 (49.3 and 43.5 g) > T5 (47.6 and 40.5 g) > T2 (46.9 and 38.2 g) > T1 (45.6 and 37.1 g). Likewise, the total chlorophyll content was highest in T3 (12.6 μg/g) followed by T4 (12.3 μg/g), T5 (11.9 μg/g), T2 (11.5 μg/g), and the control, that is, T1 (11.0 μg/g). However, the most promising results were obtained for T3 and T4 treatments in comparison with the control (T1), which implies that, among all organic raw materials, coconut and rice husks showed the highest potential for salt accumulation and thereby wastewater treatment. Conclusively, the findings of the study suggest that organic raw material–based amendments are useful in managing the high salts levels in both plants and leachates.

Abstract: Long-term soil salt accumulation could lead to salinization. Aimed to prevent soil salinization, we investigated soil salt dynamics, its interface with the groundwater table, rainfalls duration and the impact periods when salt is mostly accumulated. Total soil salt accumulation and dynamic distribution were monitored in the 0–80 cm layer in alluvial farmland from 2018 to 2020. We found soil salt contents increased by 0.15 g kg–1 and 0.07 g kg–1 in the 0–40 and 40–80 cm soil layers, respectively, which indicated that soil salinization occurred. We defined the rainstorm impact period (RIP) as period when soil salt dynamic distribution was affected by rainstorm event. The salinity time-trend during RIP was sequentially characterized by a first salt leaching, followed by a rapid and then slow salt accumulation, which took the first 4 days, from day 4 to 10, and then beyond, respectively. In the first leaching stage, salt migration content was determined by rainfall (P < 0.05) which could leach 41.5% of salt on average in the whole soil layer. In the rapid accumulation stage, lots of salt accumulated due to high evapotranspiration and shallow groundwater table. In the slow accumulation stage, salt accumulation rate was inhibited by deeper groundwater table. In addition, the total accumulated soil salt in the whole soil layer increased by 0.14 g kg–1 in the RIPs, which comprised only 14.5% of the overall study period, but the value accounted for 63.6% of the salt accumulation, thereby indicating that RIPs were the main periods when salt accumulated during the soil salinization process. Our results provided insights into soil salt dynamic distribution during RIPs, thereby facilitating the effective prevention and control of soil salinization.

The salt tolerance of glycophytes is thought to be related to their ability to restrict sodium access to their aboveground parts. A previous study on the mulberry (Morus alba L.) revealed a phenomenon of explosive salt accumulation in the leaves after exceeding a certain treatment concentration. Here, we aim to observe the internal state of mulberry seedlings under salt stress by the proteomic method and to identify the possible inducements associated with salt bursts. In this study, the target treatments for TMT-label free quantitative analyses were determined by measuring the sodium content in the roots and leaves. The results showed that the expressions of proteins classified as “plant hormones”, “ion channels”, “REDOX homeostasis”, “cytoskeleton” and “cell wall” changed significantly after salt bursts. This phenotype is associated with the destruction of the apoplast, in which the assembly of the Casparian strip may be affected by the inhibition of some key proteins, indirectly increasing the rate of ion migration through the endodermis into the shoots.

Water scarcity in South Africa, and globally, presents challenges for industries. It is imperative to develop responsible water use, such as recycling and reusing wastewater from food processing industries such as breweries. The Ibhayi Brewery (SAB Ltd) employs a combination of sustainable treatment processes that include anaerobic digestion (AD), primary facultative ponds (PFP), high rate algal ponds (HRAP) and constructed wetlands (CW) to treat brewery effluent on an experimental scale. The constituent concentrations of these experimentally treated effluents are within the ranges prescribed by local regulations to allow for potential downstream use in agriculture and aquaculture. However, the sodium content in this treated effluent, which originates from upstream cleaning agents and pH control at the onsite effluent treatment facility, is a constraint to the downstream use of brewery effluent. This study addresses the salt problem, by investigating the potential of either reducing/eliminating salt addition at source, or developing alternative techniques for downstream agriculture to mitigate the effects of salt accumulation caused by irrigation with brewery effluent. Four salt-tolerant test crops; Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris), saltbush (Atriplex nummularia), Salicornia meyeriana and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), grew efficiently in brewery effluent irrigated soils but did not stop sodium accumulation in the growth medium. Swiss chard had the best growth with a wet biomass accumulation of 8,173 g m-2, due to the plant’s ability to tolerate saline conditions and continuous cropping. Crop rotation, to limit effects of nutrient depletion in soil, had no significant effect on plant growth suggesting soils were adequately able to provide micro-nutrients in the short-term. Prolonged irrigation with brewery effluent can lead to sodium accumulation in the soil, which was successfully controlled through the addition of soil amendments (gypsum and Trichoderma cultures). These reduced soil sodium from a potentially limiting level of 1,398 mg L-1 to the acceptable levels of 240 mg L-1 and 353 mg L-1 respectively, mainly through leaching. However only Trichoderma improved Swiss chard production to 11,238 g m-2. While crop rotation in this work did not contribute to mitigating the problem of salt accumulation, soil amended with Trichoderma appears to be a potential solution when brewery effluent is reused in agriculture. In an alternative to soil cultivation, CWs were trialled with no significant differences in the sodium concentration of brewery effluent treated along a 15 m lateral flow CW, which could be attributed to evapotranspiration. This was notably accompanied by a desirable 95.21% decrease in ammonia from inlet to outlet resulting in significant improvement in water quality for reuse in aquaculture where ammonia levels are important limiting constraints. While CWs remain a suitable brewery effluent treatment solution, this technology requires additional modelling and optimisation in order to mitigate the problem of salt accumulation in the reuse of treated brewery effluent in agriculture and aquaculture. This research demonstrates the baseline information for such modelling and optimisation. African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) grew in CW treated brewery effluent; however, this growth was moderate at 0.92% bw day-1, whereas Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) were shown to be unsuited to growth in this system and lost weight with an average specific growth rate (SGR) of -0.98% bw day-1; and both fish species presenting with health related concerns. Hardy fish species such as African catfish can be cultured in brewery effluent, but with risk involved. This was a preliminary study to develop parameters for future dimensional analysis modelling to allow optimisation of the CW, based on nutrient removal rates obtained which will allow for improved downstream aquaculture by reducing or eliminating risks presented in this study. This work has also contributed to a foundation for the development of guidelines that use a risk-based approach for water use in aquaculture. Alternatives to the current in place cleaning agents were considered to mitigate the effects of salt accumulation. Sodium is introduced into the effluent via the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium chlorite for cleaning and disinfection in the brewery, as well as through effluent pH adjustment in the AD plant. The widespread use of outdated legacy cleaning systems and pH adjustment regimes is entrenched in the brewery standard operating procedures (SOP). A cost-benefit analysis (CBA) demonstrated that a change of cleaning and disinfecting regimes to hydrogen peroxide in the brewery, and magnesium hydroxide pH adjustment in the effluent treatment plant addresses the sodium issue upstream in the brewery practically eliminating sodium from the effluent. In addition, a life cycle analysis (LCA) was carried out to assess the environmental impacts associated with the alternative cleaning and pH adjustment scenarios. The LCA showed that electricity consumption during use phase of the chemicals for respective purposes, as well as their production activities were major contributors to the significant environmental impact categories that were assessed. The cleaning scenario employing the use of hydrogen peroxide for both cleaning and disinfection was found to be the most environmentally sustainable. This was attributed to the reduced number of chemicals used compared to the other cleaning scenarios. Dolomitic lime was the pH adjustment alternative with the lowest average environmental impact; but, however, had a higher impact on freshwater eutrophication which is of major concern if the effluent will be reused for irrigation. Magnesium hydroxide was therefore considered to be the better option as a sodium hydroxide alternative for pH adjustment. This mitigates salt accumulation, making treated brewery effluent suitable for reuse in high value downstream agriculture and aquaculture, while employing more environmentally sustainable technologies. Notably, this converts brewery effluent from a financial liability to Ibhayi Brewery, into a product containing water and nutrients that generate income, improve food security, and can create employment in downstream agriculture and aquaculture in a sustainable manner.

The aim of this study was to find a material suited for the prevention of evaporative water loss and salt accumulation in coastal saline soils. One-dimensional vertical water infiltration and phreatic evaporation experiments were conducted using a silty loam saline soil. A 3-cm-thick layer of corn straw, biochar, and peat was buried at the soil depth of 20 cm, and a 6-cm-thick layer of peat was also buried at the same soil depth for comparison. The presence of the biochar layer increased the upper soil water content, but its ability to inhibit salt accumulation was poor, leading to a high salt concentration in the surface soil. The 3-cm-thick straw and 6-cm-thick peat layers were most effective to inhibit salt accumulation, which reduced the upper soil salt concentration by 96% and 93%, respectively. However, the straw layer strongly inhibited phreatic evaporation and resulted in low water content in the upper soil layer. Compared with the straw layer, the peat layer increased the upper soil water content. Thus, burying a 6-cm-thick peat layer in the coastal saline soil is the optimal strategy to retain water in the upper soil layer and intercept salt in the deeper soil layer.

Salt accumulation in soils poses severe challenges for crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Scarcity of rainfall and a high evaporation rate in these regions are considered major reasons for salt accumulation. It drastically reduces the leaching of excessive salts below the root zone of crops. The toxic effects of salts on plants can be greatly reduced with the use of biological and inorganic amendments. The present study was conducted to investigate the positive influence of gypsum (GP), composted cow dung (CCD) and the combined use of gypsum and composted cow dung (GP+CCD) on the growth, seed yield, and physiological and chemical attributes of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) in salty soil conditions. Saline-sodic soil was prepared using salts that include NaCl, Na2SO4, MgSO4, and CaCl2. It contained three levels of electrical conductivity (EC), i.e., 1.8, 6, and 12 dS m−1, and had a sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) of 15. We noted significant deleterious effects of excessive salt stress on multiple attributes of the growth, produce, physiology, and chemical factors of sunflowers. However, treatment with GP+CCD improved all these attributes in all these conditions over the control treatment. Treatment with GP+CCD also significantly increased N, P and K contents over the control in the absence of salt stress, i.e., normal conditions. Conversely, treatment with GP+CCD caused an extreme decline in antioxidant enzyme activity (APX, GPX, CAT and SOD) and Na+/K+ ratio in seeds of up to 90, 75, and 71% over control at an EC level of 1.8, 6, and 12 dS m−1, respectively. This study suggests the combined application of gypsum and composted cow dung for better production of sunflowers in salt-affected soils, and augmented growth, yield, physiology, biochemistry and nutritional value in the sunflower seeds.
