The study was underlain by the child's introduction to letters performed by memorization, in which the children find it difficult to know it in sequence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to increase children's ability to know the letters through phonic methods. The study applied the Class Action Research (CAR) Method with a model of Kemmis and Taggart. The data collection technique used is observation and test. The result of the study showed that a child could recognize the vowel and consonants. However, no child can recognize the initial letter sounds of the images of objects contained on the card, and there was no child able to combine letters into syllables and words at the pretest stage. In cycle I, there are 12 children able to recognize the vowel and consonant letters, 13 children can recognize the initial letter sounds of the images of objects contained on the cards, and 12 children can combine letters into syllables and words. In cycle II, there are 17 children able to recognize vowel and consonant letters, 16 children can recognize the initial letter sounds of the images of objects contained on the cards, and 15 children can combine letters into syllables and words. Thus the application of the phonic method can improve child-speaking ability.

Skilled handwriting of single letters is associated not only with a neat final product but also with fluent pen-movement, characterized by a smooth pen-tip velocity profile. Our study explored fluency when writing single letters in children who were just beginning to learn to handwrite, and the extent to which this was predicted by the children’s pen-control ability and by their letter knowledge. 176 Norwegian children formed letters by copying and from dictation (i.e., in response to hearing letter sounds). Performance on these tasks was assessed in terms of the counts of velocity inversions as the children produced sub-letter features that would be produced by competent handwriters as a single, smooth (ballistic) action. We found that there was considerable variation in these measures across writers, even when producing well-formed letters. Children also copied unfamiliar symbols, completed various pen-control tasks (drawing lines, circles, garlands, and figure eights), and tasks that assessed knowledge of letter sounds and shapes. After controlling for pen-control ability, pen-movement fluency was affected by letter knowledge (specifically children’s performance on a task that required selecting graphemes on the basis of their sound). This was the case when children retrieved letter forms from dictated letter sounds, but also when directly copying letters and, unexpectedly, when copying unfamiliar symbols. These findings suggest that familiarity with a letter affects movement fluency during letter production but may also point towards a more general ability to process new letter-like symbols in children with good letter knowledge.

Abstract The Implementation of Jolly Phonics with Islamic Values to Introduce Letters and Pronunciation for Toddler. The success in introducing letters to early childhood cannot be separated from how the stimulus method is used. But many do not yet know how to effectively introduce letters to early childhood. The Jolly Phonics method is a method that teaches reading by means of synthesizing letter sounds to read words and teach sounds of letters in a multisensory manner. Data collection techniques are observation and documentation. The results showed that the Islamic jolly phonics method can increase the enthusiasm of students in the teaching and learning process, improve the ability to recognize letters and the ability to recite phonemes. Key words: jolly phonics, alphabet, phoneme, islamic Abstrak Implementasi Metode Jolly Phonics Bermuatan Nilai Islami untuk Pengenalan Huruf dan Kemampuan Melafalkan Fonem bagi Anak Usia Dini. Kata-kata kunci: jolly phonics, huruf, fonem, islami

AbstractLearning the sounds of letters is important for learning to decode printed words and is a key component of phonics instruction. Some letter sounds are easier for children than others, and studies of these differences can shed light on the factors that influence children’s learning. The present study examined knowledge of the sounds of lowercase letters among children in England, where a government-mandated curriculum specifies the order in which letter sounds should be taught and where letters’ sounds are taught before the names. The participants were 355 children from Nursery (mean age 4 years, 4 months), Reception (mean age 5 years, 4 months), and Year 1 (6 years, 4 months) classes. When order of teaching was statistically controlled, children did better than expected on the initial letter of their first name and worse on visually confusable letters. Unlike the North American children in previous studies, they did not perform better on letters that had their sounds at the beginning of their names than on other types of letters. The sonority and the age of acquisition of the letter’s sound were also not influential. Implications for letter teaching, particularly for children at risk of literacy problems, are discussed.

Having strong foundation in English literacy nowadays is believed to be a very crucial requirement for the children to survive and success both in educational and social lives. One of the most effective strategies for enhancing children’s early reading and literacy skill is through Jolly Phonics. Despite the popularity and its effectiveness, there is still factor to the absence of the strategy, namely lack of teacher knowledge. This paper is intended to share the techniques of how to implement Jolly Phonics strategy for teaching and developing children’s English literacy. This study was conducted in one of innovative bilingual schools in Denpasar, Bali. The study employed descriptive qualitative method as a research design and used observation, documentation and interview to collect the data from the teacher. The findings showed that the teacher had successfully implement the 5 skills in Jolly Phonics, namely (1) learning the letter sounds, (2) learning letter formation, (3) blending-for reading, (4) identifying sounds in words-for writing and (5) tricky words, through variety of enjoyable techniques involving children’s sight, sound and kinesthetic means. Thus, implementing Jolly Phonics through techniques explained will improve children’s overall English literacy skill.
