Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic affects all populations worldwide, including adolescents. Adolescents can develop a severe form of COVID-19, especially with comorbidity underlying. The prior studies of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine showed excellent effectiveness in adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the BBIBP-CorV vaccine with the immunobridging approach in Thai adolescents. Methods: This single-center, prospective cohort study compared the immunogenicity after 2 doses of the BBIBO-CorV vaccine with 21 days interval of participants aged 12-17 years with 18-30 years at Chulabhorn Hospital, Chulabhorn Royal Academy, Bangkok, Thailand. The key eligible criteria were healthy or had stable pre-existing comorbidity participants, aged 12-17 years. The primary endpoint was the anti-receptor binding domain antibody concentration at 4 weeks after dose 2 of the vaccine. In addition, safety profiles were solicited adverse events within 7 days after each dose of vaccine and any adverse events through 1 month after dose 2 of the vaccine. Results: Four weeks after the second vaccination, the GMC of anti-RBD antibody in the adolescent cohort was 102.9 BAU/mL (95%CI; 91.0-116.4) and 36.9 BAU/mL (95%CI; 30.9-44.0) in the adult cohort. The GMR of the adolescent cohort was 2.79 (95%CI; 2.25-3.46, p-value; <0.0001) compared with the adult cohort which met non-inferiority criteria. The reactogenicity was slightly less reported in the adolescent cohort compared with the adult cohort. No serious adverse events were reported in both cohorts. Conclusion: Vaccination with the BBIBP-CorV vaccine in the adolescent participants was safe and effective.

Abstract Available habitat and hence the global population of the Endangered giant nuthatch Sitta magna, restricted to lower montane habitats of south-western China, eastern Myanmar and northern Thailand, remains poorly quantified. Thailand is the only portion of the species’ range for which there is a population estimate. To obtain a more precise estimate of the Thai population and clarify the extent and characteristics of suitable habitat remaining, we conducted 335 point-count surveys at 67 points across eight localities during November 2019–February 2020. We estimated abundance and identified preferred habitat characteristics using N-mixture models, and created suitable habitat maps based on data from surveys and remote sensing. Our estimate for Thailand was 578 (95% CI 391–854) individuals based on a density of 3.7 (95% CI 2.5–5.5) individuals/km2 in 156 km2 of suitable habitat. The giant nuthatch prefers dry forest with a large amount of mature native or planted pine Pinus kesiya and with a large tree basal area and an open canopy. Our estimate of suitable habitat remaining was less than previously reported and thus the population has probably decreased, although most of this habitat is within protected areas. Habitats for the species in Thailand have a stronger level of protection than in Myanmar and China, although habitat in China remains unquantified. We recommend further research in Myanmar and China, which may hold the majority of available habitat for the giant nuthatch. For long-term management, detailed study of the association of the giant nuthatch with pine plantations is required.

The gold standard for estimating sodium intake is 24h urine sodium excretion. Several equations have been used to estimate 24h urine sodium excretion, however, a validated formula for calculating 24h urine sodium excretion from 12h urine collection has not yet been established. This study aims to develop novel equations for estimating 24h urine sodium excretion from 12h and random spot urine collection and also to validate existing spot urine equations in the Thai population. A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 209 adult hospital personnel. Participants were asked to perform a 12h daytime, 12h nighttime, and a random spot urine collection over a period of 24 hours. The mean 24h urine sodium excretion was 4,055±1,712 mg/day. Estimated urine sodium excretion from 3 different equations using random spot urine collection showed moderate correlation and agreement with actual 24h urine sodium excretion (r = 0.54, P<0.001, ICC = 0.53 for Kawasaki; r = 0.57, P<0.001, ICC = 0.44 for Tanaka; r = 0.60, P<0.001, ICC = 0.45 for INTERSALT). Novel equations for predicting 24h urine sodium excretion were then developed using variables derived from 12h daytime urine collection, 12h nighttime urine collection, random spot urine collection, 12h daytime with random spot urine collection, and 12h nighttime with random spot urine collection which showed strong correlation and agreement with actual measured values (r = 0.88, P<0.001, ICC = 0.87; r = 0.83, P<0.001, ICC = 0.81; r = 0.67, P<0.001, ICC = 0.62; r = 0.90, P<0.001, ICC = 0.90; and r = 0.83, p<0.001, ICC = 0.82 respectively). Bland-Altman plots indicated good agreement between predicted values and actual 24h urine sodium excretion using the new equations. Newly derived equations from 12h daytime and 12h nighttime urine collection with or without casual spot urine collection were able to accurately predict 24h urine sodium excretion.

Abstract Purpose This study evaluates the morphology of the Thai proximal tibia based on three-dimensional (3D) models to design the tibial component. Methods The 3D models of 480 tibias were created using reverse engineering techniques from computed tomography imaging data obtained from 240 volunteers (120 males, 120 females; range 20–50 years). Based on 3D measurements, a digital ruler was used to measure the distance between the triangular points of the models. The morphometric parameters consisted of mediolateral length (ML), anteroposterior width (AP), medial anteroposterior width (MAP), lateral anteroposterior width (LAP), central to a medial length (CM), central to a lateral length (CL), medial anterior radius (MAR), lateral anterior radius (LAR), and tibial aspect ratio (AR). An independent t-test was performed for gender differences, and K-means clustering was used to find the optimum sizes of the tibial component with a correlation between ML length and AP width in Thai people. Results The average morphometric parameters of Thai proximal tibia, namely ML, AP, MAP, LAP, CM, and CL, were as follows: 72.52 ± 5.94 mm, 46.36 ± 3.84 mm, 49.22 ± 3.62 mm, 43.59 ± 4.05 mm, 14.29 ± 2.72 mm, and 15.28 ± 2.99 mm, respectively. The average of MAR, LAR, and AR was 24.43 ± 2.11 mm, 21.52 ± 2.00 mm, and 1.57 ± 0.08, respectively. All morphometric parameters in males were significantly higher than those of females. There was a difference between the Thai proximal tibia and other nationalities and a mismatch between the size of the commercial tibial component and the Thai knee. Using K-means clustering analysis, the recommended number of ML and AP is seven sizes for the practical design of tibial components to cover the Thai anatomy. Conclusion The design of the tibial component should be recommended to cover the anatomy of the Thai population. These data provide essential information for the specific design of Thai knee prostheses.

Abstract Background Lack of knowledge and awareness on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can result in irrational use of antibiotics, which is one of the major drivers of AMR. One goal of the Thailand National Strategic Plan on AMR (2017-2021) is a 20% increase in public knowledge and awareness of antibiotic use and AMR by 2021. This study assesses antibiotic use, level of knowledge and awareness of antibiotic use and AMR and the factors associated with their knowledge and awareness in the Thai population in 2019. It compares findings with a similar national survey in 2017. Methods An AMR module was integrated into the Health and Welfare Survey, a biennial national household survey conducted by the National Statistical Office since 2017. The 2019 survey took place in March, through face-to-face interviews with 27,900 Thai adults aged 15 years or above who participated in the survey and compares 2019 findings with those from 2017. Results One month prior to the survey, 6.3% of population reported use of antibiotics (reduced from 7.9% to 2017), of which 98.1% received antibiotics through healthcare professionals and almost half (43.2%) for flu symptoms. During the last 12 months, 21.5% of Thai adults received information on the appropriate use of antibiotics and AMR (increased from 17.8% to 2017); mostly through health professionals (82.7%). On knowledge, 24.3% of adults gave correct answers to more than three out of six statements (three true and three false statements) (increased from 23.7% to 2017). The overall mean score of awareness of appropriate antibiotic use and AMR is 3.3 out of total score of 5. Conclusions Although progress was made on knowledge and awareness between 2017 and 2019, certain practices, such as use of antibiotics for flu symptoms and receiving information about antibiotic use and AMR, are inappropriate and inadequate. These findings require significant action, notably strengthening health professionals’ ability to prescribe and dispense antibiotics appropriately and effective communication with patients. The government should promote specific information on rational use of antibiotics and AMR to specific target groups.

Forensic facial reconstruction is a useful tool to assist the public in recognizing human remains, leading to positive forensic investigation outcomes. To reproduce a virtual face, facial soft tissue thickness is one of the major guidelines to reach the accuracy and reliability for three-dimensional computerized facial reconstruction, a method that is making a significant contribution to improving forensic investigation and identification. This study aimed to develop a facial soft tissue thickness dataset for a Thai population, and test its reliability in the context of facial reconstruction. Three-dimensional facial reconstruction was conducted on four skulls (2 males and 2 females, with ages ranging between 51 to 60 years). Two main tools of three-dimensional computer animation and modeling software—Blender and Autodesk Maya—were used to rebuild the three-dimensional virtual face. The three-dimensional coordinate ( x, y, z) cutaneous landmarks on the mesh templates were aligned homologous to the facial soft tissue thickness markers on the three-dimensional skull model. The final three-dimensional virtual face was compared to the target frontal photograph using face pool comparison. Four three-dimensional virtual faces were matched at low to moderate levels, ranging from 30% to 70% accuracy. These results demonstrate that the facial soft tissue thickness database of a Thai population applied in this study could be useful for three-dimensional computerized facial reconstruction purposes.
