A laser heating system for samples confined in diamond anvil cells paired with in situ X-ray diffraction measurements at the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III is presented. The system features two independent laser configurations (on-axis and off-axis of the X-ray path) allowing for a broad range of experiments using different designs of diamond anvil cells. The power of the continuous laser source can be modulated for use in various pulsed laser heating or flash heating applications. An example of such an application is illustrated here on the melting curve of iron at megabar pressures. The optical path of the spectroradiometry measurements is simulated with ray-tracing methods in order to assess the level of present aberrations in the system and the results are compared with other systems, that are using simpler lens optics. Based on the ray-tracing the choice of the first achromatic lens and other aspects for accurate temperature measurements are evaluated.

Abstract The present article proposed the closed-form solution of the generalized non-Fourier model-based bio-heat transfer equation (BHTE) in Cylindrical coordinates to understand the thermal behavior of living tissue heated by a pulsed laser. The axisymmetric living tissue exposed to the non-Gaussian temporal profile of laser heating has been considered to investigate the non-Fourier bio-heat transfer phenomena. The closed-form solution of the generalized non-Fourier model-based BHTE with time-dependent thermal energy generation has been obtained through the finite integral transform technique. The analytical solution was juxtaposed to the corresponding numerical solution in order to determine its reliability. The numerical solution of the aforementioned governing equation has been obtained by the finite volume method. The results of both analytical and numerical solutions have been verified using results given in published literature. Subsequently, the dual-phase-lag model's findings were juxtaposed to those obtained using the hyperbolic and traditional Fourier models. The effect of different parameters like relaxation times corresponding to the temperature gradient and heat flux, metabolic energy generation, and blood perfusion on the resultant temperature distribution inside the axisymmetric living tissue exposed to pulsed laser heating has been discussed. The importance of the present study might be found in various applications such as laser-based-photo-thermal therapy, melting of the surface of metal and alloys by laser heating, etc.

It is widely accepted that the lower mantle consists of mainly three major minerals—ferropericlase, bridgmanite and calcium silicate perovskite. Ferropericlase ((Mg,Fe)O) is the second most abundant of the three, comprising approximately 16–20 wt% of the lower mantle. The stability of ferropericlase at conditions of the lowermost mantle has been highly investigated, with controversial results. Amongst other reasons, the experimental conditions during laser heating (such as duration and achieved temperature) have been suggested as a possible explanation for the discrepancy. In this study, we investigate the effect of pulsed laser heating on the stability of ferropericlase, with a geochemically relevant composition of Mg0.76Fe0.24O (Fp24) at pressure conditions corresponding to the upper part of the lower mantle and at a wide temperature range. We report on the decomposition of Fp24 with the formation of a high-pressure (Mg,Fe)3O4 phase with CaTi2O4-type structure, as well as the dissociation of Fp24 into Fe-rich and Mg-rich phases induced by pulsed laser heating. Our results provide further arguments that the chemical composition of the lower mantle is more complex than initially thought, and that the compositional inhomogeneity is not only a characteristic of the lowermost part, but includes depths as shallow as below the transition zone.

Abstract The present investigation is concerned with vibration phenomenon of a homogeneous, isotropic thermoelastic microbeam with double porosity (TDP) structure induced by pulsed laser heating, in the context of Lord– Shulman theory of thermoelasticity with one relaxation time. Laplace transform technique has been applied to obtain the expressions for lateral deflection, axial stress, axial displacement, volume fraction field, and temperature distribution. The resulting quantities are recovered in the physical domain by a numerical inversion technique. Variations of axial displacement, axial stress, lateral deflection, volume fraction field, and temperature distribution with axial distance are depicted graphically to show the effect of porosity and laser intensity parameter. Some particular cases are also deduced.
