Abstract A novel conversion film containing cerium and molybdenum was synthesized on the rebar surface, and then the pitting sensitivity of the rebar was improved in a concrete environment containing chloride. This conversion film presented a two-layer structure, which involved CeMoOx as the outer layer and FeOx as the inner layer. The film with two-layer structure exhibited a strong corrosion resistance after being immersed in an alkaline environment (pH=12.5) added with 0.1 M NaCl, and the charge transfer resistance (Rt) could reach 5.88×106 Ω·cm2 after immersion for 1600 h, which was approximately 2.5 times the initial Rt value. Moreover, it was found that the film has a self-heal property when being damaged beyond the pitting potential. The anticorrosion mechanism of the film and its self-healing mechanism were discussed in depth in this study.

Purpose One of the sources for the increase in the carbon footprint on the earth is the manufacturing of cement, which causes a severer environmental impact. Abundant research is going on to diminish CO2 content in the atmosphere by appropriate utilization of waste by-products of industries. Alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) is an innovative green new concrete made by complete replacement of cement various supplementary cementitious raw materials. Concrete is a versatile material used in different fields of structures, so it is very important to study the durability in different exposures along with the strength. The purpose of this paper is to study the performance of AASC by incorporating quartz sand as fine aggregate under different exposure conditions. Design/methodology/approach The materials for this innovative AASC are selected based on preliminary studies and literature surveys. Based on numerous trials a better performance mix proportion of AASC with quartz sand is developed with 1:2:4 mix proportion, 0.8 alkali Binder ratio, 19 M of NaOH and 50% concentration of Na2SiO3. Subsequently, AASC cubes are prepared and exposed for 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, 90, 112, 180, 252 and 365 days in ambient, acid, alkaline, sulfate, chloride and seawater and tested for compressive strength. In addition, to study the microstructural characteristics, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis was also performed. Findings Long-term performance of AASC developed with quartz sand is very good in the ambient, alkaline environment of 5% NaOH and seawater with the highest compressive strength values of 51.8, 50.83 and 64.46, respectively. A decrease in compressive strengths was observed after the age of 14, 56 and 112 days for acid, chloride and sulfate exposure conditions, respectively. SEM image shows a denser microstructure of AASC matrix for ambient, alkaline of 5% NaOH and seawater. Research limitations/implications The proposed AASC is prepared with a mix proportion of 1:2:4, so the other proportions of AASC need to verify. In general plain, AASC is not used in practice except in few applications, in this work the effect of reinforced AASC is not checked. The real environmental exposure in fields may not create for AASC, as it was tested in different exposure conditions in the laboratory. Practical implications The developed AASC is recommended in practical applications where early strength is required, where the climate is hot, where water is scarce for curing, offshore and onshore constructions exposed to the marine environment and alkaline environment industries like breweries, distilleries and sewage treatment plants. As AASC is recommended for ambient air and in other exposures, its implementation as a construction material will reduce the carbon footprint. Originality/value The developed AASC mix proportion 1:2:4 is an economical mix, because of low binder content, but it exhibits a higher early age compressive strength value of 45.6 MPa at the age of 3 days. The compressive strength increases linearly with age from 3 to 365 days when exposed to seawater and ambient air. The performance of AASC is very good in the ambient, alkaline environment and seawater compared to other exposure conditions.

A novel hemicucurbituril-based macrocycle, alternately consisting of amidobenzene and 2-imidazolidione moieties was designed and synthesized. Based on the fragment coupling strategy, nitrobenzene-containing hemicucurbituril was firstly prepared facilely under alkaline environment, and reduction of the nitro groups produced the desired amidobenzene-containing hemicucurbituril. As an original fluorescent chemosensor, it exhibited strong interactions with Fe3+ over other metal cations. The experimental evidence of fluorescence spectra suggested that a 1:1 complex was formed between this macrocycle and Fe3+ with an association constant up to (2.1 ± 0.3) × 104 M−1. Meanwhile, this macrocycle showed no obvious or only slight enhancement of the fluorescence intensity with selected anions.

In this study, the influence of steel slag (SS) content on the strength of the cementitious materials was investigated. The quaternary active cementitious material (CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-SO3) was prepared using various proportions of steel slag (SS), granulated blast furnace slag (BFS), and desulfurized gypsum (DG). The mechanism of synergistic excitation hydration of the cementitious materials was examined using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The strength of the mortar test block was initially increased and decreased later with the increase of the SS content. Mortar test block with 20% steel slag, 65% granulated blast furnace slag, and 15% desulfurized gypsum with 0.35 water-binder ratio showed the highest compressive strength of 57.3 MPa on 28 days. The free calcium oxide (f-CaO) in the SS reacted with water and produced calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) which created an alkaline environment. Under the alkaline environment, the alkali-activated reaction occurred with BFS. In the early stage of hydration reaction, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel and fibrous hydration product ettringite (AFt) crystals were formed, which provided early strength to the cementitious materials. As the hydration reaction progressed, the interlocked growth of C-S-H gel and AFt crystals continued and promoted the increase of the strength of the cementitious system.

Bacterial infection remains a great risk in medical implantation surgery. In this paper, we found that degradable metals may be a feasible alternative option of antibacterial implantation materials. It is known that the spalling mechanism of magnesium (Mg) during degradation leads to Mg ions-induced alkaline environment, which is harmful to planktonic bacteria. In this study, we showed that alkaline pH environment is almost harmless to those adhesive bacteria protected in well-formed biofilms. Moreover, experimental results demonstrated that the biofilm formed in the place where Mg spalls are destroyed, releasing the covered bacteria to be planktonic in the alkaline environment. As a result, the colonization of biofilms continues to shrink during the degradation of Mg. It implies that if degradable metal is employed as implantation material, even if bacterial infection occurs, it may be possibly cured without second surgery.
