AbstractModulation instability is one of the most ubiquitous phenomena in physics. Here we investigate the phase-sensitive properties of modulation instability with harmonic seeding in passive fiber resonators. Theoretical investigations based on the Lugiato−Lefever equation with time dependent pump and a three-wave truncation show that the dynamics of the system is sensitive to the relative phase between input signal, idler, and pump waves. The modulation instability gain can even vanish for a peculiar value of the initial relative phase. An advanced multi-heterodyne measurement technique had been developed to record the real time evolution, round-trip to round-trip, of the power and phase of the output cavity field to confirm these theoretical predictions.

AbstractThe magnetic skyrmion crystal is a periodic array of a swirling topological spin texture. Since it is regarded as an interference pattern by multiple helical spin density waves, the texture changes with the relative phase shifts among the constituent waves. Although such a phase degree of freedom is relevant to not only magnetism but also transport properties, its effect has not been elucidated thus far. We here theoretically show that a phase shift in the skyrmion crystals leads to a tetra-axial vortex crystal and a meron-antimeron crystal, both of which show a staggered pattern of the scalar spin chirality and give rise to nonreciprocal transport phenomena without the spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that such a phase shift can be driven by exchange interactions between the localized spins, thermal fluctuations, and long-range chirality interactions in spin-charge coupled systems. Our results provide a further diversity of topological spin textures and open a new field of emergent electromagnetism by the phase shift engineering.

AbstractThe resolution along the propagation direction of far field imagers can be much smaller than the wavelength by exploiting coherent interference phenomena. We demonstrate a height profile precision as low as 31 nm using wavelengths between 0.375 mm and 0.5 mm (corresponding to 0.6 THz–0.8 THz) by evaluating the Fabry-Pérot oscillations within surface-structured samples. We prove the extreme precision by visualizing structures with a height of only 49 nm, corresponding to 1:7500 to 1:10000 vacuum wavelengths, a height difference usually only accessible to near field measurement techniques at this wavelength range. At the same time, the approach can determine thicknesses in the centimeter range, surpassing the dynamic range of any near field measurement system by orders of magnitude. The measurement technique combined with a Hilbert-transform approach yields the (optical) thickness extracted from the relative phase without any extraordinary wavelength stabilization.

Abstract Entanglement has attracted great attention in the past few decades due to its potential applications in the field of quantum information protocols. From now, achieving excellent phase locking in entanglement generation is significant yet a challenging task in cryogenic quantum technology. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a comprehensive paradigm of phase locking protocol for quadrature entanglement at the microwave wavelengths. We carry out a theoretical derivation of the quadrature entangled microwaves generated based on Josephson Parametric Amplifiers (JPAs), and the phase locking error signal, which is used to lock the relative phase of zero between the two quadrature squeezed microwaves. Simulating data for the phase locking scheme are shown under different parameter settings for comparison. Finally, we use the proposed phase locking scheme to enable a stable output of quadrature entangled microwave.

Abstract The structure of the non-axisymmetric heat load distribution at the divertor plates is determined not only by the toroidal but also from the poloidal spectrum of non-axisymmetric eld perturbations. Whether they are intrinsic, like error fields, or they are applied through 3D coils, the non-axisymmetric fields produce complex 3D edge magnetic topologies (footprints) that alter the properties of the heat and particle flux distributions on the divertor target plates. In this manuscript, a study of the impact of applied 3D eld poloidal spectrum on the footprint size and structure is done for the DIII-D tokamak using the resistive MHD code M3D-C1 coupled with the field line tracing code TRIP3D. To resolve the impact of the poloidal spectrum of the magnetic perturbation, the relative phase of the two rows of in-vessel 3D coils used to produce both a n = 2 and a n = 3 perturbation is varied, where n is the toroidal harmonic of the magnetic perturbation. This shows that the largest footprint is predicted when the relative phase of the two rows is close to zero, which is also where the resonant coupling with the plasma is maximized. These results suggest that it will be challenging to decouple the footprint size from the requisite resonant coupling for RMP-ELM control. The correlation between the measured heat load and particle flux distributions at the outer divertor plates in DIII-D and the magnetic measurements is in good agreement with the predicted dependence of the magnetic footprint size on the amplitude of the resonant component of the plasma response.
