AbstractThe wealth of properties in functional materials at the nanoscale has attracted tremendous interest over the last decades, spurring the development of ever more precise and ingenious characterization techniques. In ferroelectrics, for instance, scanning probe microscopy based techniques have been used in conjunction with advanced optical methods to probe the structure and properties of nanoscale domain walls, revealing complex behaviours such as chirality, electronic conduction or localised modulation of mechanical response. However, due to the different nature of the characterization methods, only limited and indirect correlation has been achieved between them, even when the same spatial areas were probed. Here, we propose a fast and unbiased analysis method for heterogeneous spatial data sets, enabling quantitative correlative multi-technique studies of functional materials. The method, based on a combination of data stacking, distortion correction, and machine learning, enables a precise mesoscale analysis. When applied to a data set containing scanning probe microscopy piezoresponse and second harmonic generation polarimetry measurements, our workflow reveals behaviours that could not be seen by usual manual analysis, and the origin of which is only explainable by using the quantitative correlation between the two data sets.

Topological superconductivity emerging in one- or two-dimensional hybrid materials is predicted as a key ingredient for quantum computing. However, not only the design of complex heterostructures is primordial for future applications but also the characterization of their electronic and structural properties at the atomic scale using the most advanced scanning probe microscopy techniques with functionalized tips. We report on the topographic signatures observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules, iron (Fe) atoms and sodium chloride (NaCl) islands deposited on superconducting Pb(111). For the CO adsorption a comparison with the Pb(110) substrate is demonstrated. We show a general propensity of these adsorbates to diffuse at low temperature under gentle scanning conditions. Our findings provide new insights into high-resolution probe microscopy imaging with terminated tips, decoupling atoms and molecules by NaCl islands or tip-induced lateral manipulation of iron atoms on top of the prototypical Pb(111) superconducting surface.

The worldwide increase in bacterial resistance and healthcare-associated bacterial infections pose a serious threat to human health. The antimicrobial photodynamic method reveals the opportunity for a new therapeutic approach that is based on the limited delivery of photosensitizer from the material surface. Nanoporous inorganic–organic composites were obtained by entrapment of photosensitizer Photolon in polysiloxanes that was prepared by the sol–gel method. The material was characterized by its porosity, optical properties (fluorescence and absorbance), and laser-induced antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. The permanent encapsulation of Photolon in the silica coating and the antimicrobial efficiency was confirmed by confocal microscope and digital holotomography. The generation of free radicals from nanoporous surfaces was proved by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. For the first time, it was confirmed that Kelvin probe microscopy can be a label-free, noncontact alternative to other conventional methods based on fluorescence or chemiluminescence probes, etc. It was confirmed that the proposed photoactive coating enables the antibacterial photodynamic effect based on free radicals released from the surface of the coating. The highest bactericidal efficiency of the proposed coating was 87.16%. This coating can selectively limit the multiplication of bacterial cells, while protecting the environment and reducing the risk of surface contamination.
