All professions foster an identity among practitioners. Physical education is no different. How this identify influences and is expressed throughout one’s life and lifestyle is a topic not seen in our literature. In this essay, I provide a perspective for those entering as well as those engaged in the profession to reflect on the scope of being a physical educator. I’ll start with my beginning in the profession.

Actions to combat obesity in childhood and adolescence in the context of supplementary health are necessary and there is a scarcity in the literature of intervention models that address this theme. The aim of this study was to describe the intervention and the model of a program to combat obesity, by a health care operator. Purpose: Marginality and isolation have been found to negatively impact physical educators. Despite a significant body of research, few studies have included important personal attributes like teacher emotions. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships of teacher marginality, isolation, and emotions (enjoyment, anger, and anxiety) with intrapersonal job beliefs (turnover intention, perceived accomplishment, and organizational commitment). Methods: Physical educators (N = 227; 51% female) from the United States participated in the study. Results: Experienced teachers reported higher enjoyment, those with less experience reported more anger, and teachers in urban and secondary schools reported higher turnover intention. Hierarchical regression showed emotions add significant variance in relationships with job beliefs, and the interaction between marginality and emotions may help explain teacher perceptions and agency. Discussion/Conclusion: Marginality and teacher emotions, together, impact teacher well-being and job beliefs. Emotions warrant further investigation and may provide mechanisms to understand reactions to marginality and coping.

Children are living more sedentary lifestyles today than ever before in America. Physical education teachers need to be our leaders for change by promoting the importance of maintaining a healthy body and mind in today’s youth and promoting life-long physically activity. This article helps to shape the mind of a physical educator and gives them a “don’t” list to make sure are not happening in their classes, if they want students to have a positive PE experience and potentially go on to be life-long physically active learners. From not letting the students pick their own teams to not playing games that eliminate them from competition, the role that the PE teacher plays in shaping students life-long beliefs about the joy of exercise is substantial.

Objective: to know the profile of hypertensive and / or diabetic patients treated at a basic health unit in Maranhão. Method: This is a descriptive, retrospective study with a quantitative approach, performed in April 2018, with data from medical records of 137 patients enrolled in the HIPERDIA program. Data were collected through a structured script and tabulated using the SPSS SamplePower Software. Results: in the researched unit there were 195 registered patients, hypertensive and / or diabetic. A higher number of female hypertensive and / or diabetic patients was observed, with a higher prevalence of these pathologies in individuals between 60 and 69 years, followed by those aged between 50 and 59. The predominant weight among participants was between 60 and 69kg. The main blood pressure values found were <120/80 (45.99%) and with 140-159 / 90-99 (22.63%). Conclusion: weight gain is related to older age and it would be interesting to follow a nutritionist and a physical educator within the multiprofessional team in the basic health units, since both pathologies need weight control so that the rates remain stable. When prescribing medications, attention should be paid to protocols regarding the risks of drug interaction that exist among some antihypertensives.

Children with visual impairments often exhibit difficulties with locomotor skills (e.g., the ability to move one’s body from one place to another), warranting the need for ecologically valid interventions with conditions that attempt to match the real world in a variety of settings. Parents and physical education teachers are the ones choosing to provide movement opportunities for children with visual impairments and must be included in any ecologically valid intervention strategy. This was a descriptive-analytic study. To support the greatest diversity in settings, the authors recruited 94 participants (blind = 44 and low vision = 50; Mage = 13.01 years, SD = 3.26) from schools for the deaf and blind in the United States (teacher led, n = 17) or Latvia (teacher led, n = 57), through an online LISTSERV throughout the United States (parent led, n = 10), and a control subgroup (n = 10). At the pretest, no participant’s motor development met age expectations. Children with visual impairments from multiple locations and cultures significantly improved compared with controls who did not. Results were most favorable when the physical educator was the interventionist. However, further research is needed to replicate these findings.
