Abstract Jakarta is a city with a wide variety of ethnicities, languages and customs. Likewise with the Betawi culture that grew in the city of Jakarta. Jakarta culture must be distinguished from Betawi culture, Betawi people create Betawi culture, while Betawi culture is an element and supporter of Jakarta culture, conveyed by various other cultural elements found in Jakarta. Some other cultures are the cultures of various ethnic groups residing in Jakarta or national and foreign cultures or international cultures. Traditional Betawi art elements that have been known since ancient times and still live among Betawi people to this day, especially in the outskirts of Jakarta include dance, theater, music, literature and puppetry. Seeing Betawi culture in DKI Jakarta that is increasingly fading, Betawi leaders and elders under an organization called the Betawi Consultative Body (Bamus), urged the DKI Jakarta city government to create a container for the preservation and development of Betawi culture on an ongoing basis. With the application of Modern Tropical Architecture which is expected to make the tourist attractions become more modern but does not eliminate the characteristics of the Betawi culture itself.

Tropicalizing a building might seem like the best option for a young architect who lands in the tropics, but this is an approach contrary to sustainability. Claude Laurens, through one of his first projects in Congo, understood that it was better to deal with the place from the start. His project became one of the best examples of tropical modernism. The article attempts to contrast an import approach with a more sustainable one, to deal with the present and future context. The research method adopted for this study was a mixed method approach where data was sourced from literature as secondary source and compared with direct observation of the selected case study (The Sabena Towers). The results are presented as figures which were used to further illustrate findings. The result showed that the architect, with little information, did his utmost to offer Congo a new architecture that fitted with the objectives of sustainable development. The study concluded that the architect chose not to adopt the foreign architecture as a solution for the sustainability issues he encountered in the design, rather he evolved solutions that were Congolese based and therefore responded adequately to the challenges of sustainability in Congo and created an architecture for Congo.

This can be seen in the mass concept, indoor concept, outdoor concept, structural concept, circulation system, and utility system. Also, this design blends with the local value of the surrounding environment by applying local wisdom.

The article maps multiple planet-oriented movements in the history of modern (predominantly western) architecture. It looks for architectural pronunciation of social movements, political actions and historical moments. In writings of acclaimed architects and authors, it searches for origins of organic, vernacular and tropical architecture and their offspring in the contemporary approaches, views and design. The article documents changes of perception of relation between man, nature and architecture.  It commences with the very first attempts to understand this relationship: idealization and romanticisation of nature, it finishes with the most contemporary analyses based on the holistic approach and computer simulation. The article draws an extensive panorama of authors and publications that researched planted-oriented architecture.

This chapter examines the pleasures and anxieties of American colonials as they negotiated landscapes significant with hazard. It reviews the writings of Charles Ivins and others that contain vivid depictions of how schismatic notions of the tropics and their inhabitants shaped colonial rule. It also describes the social environment of Mindanao-Sulu that laid bare the tension between the integrationist claims of the tutelary colonial state and the continued operation of racially exclusionist structures. The chapter mentions Outlook magazine journalist and playwright Atherton Brownell, who fawned over Zamboanga as a model of cleanliness and tropical picturesqueness. It notes empire builders in Mindanao-Sulu that looked to preestablished discourses on tropical architecture, sanitation, and urban planning for inspiration.
