BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted school operations. To better understand the role of schools in COVID-19 transmission, we evaluated infections at two independent schools in Nashville, TN during the 2020-2021 school year. METHODS: The cumulative incidence of COVID-19 within each school, age group, and exposure setting were estimated and compared to local incidence. Primary attack rates were estimated among students quarantined for in-school close contact. RESULTS: Among 1401 students who attended school during the study period, 98 cases of COVID-19 were reported, corresponding to cumulative incidence of 7.0% (95% confidence interval (CI): 5.7-8.5). Most cases were linked to household (58%) or community (31%) transmission, with few linked to in-school transmission (11%). Overall, 619 students were quarantined, corresponding to >5000 person-days of missed school, among whom only 5 tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during quarantine (primary attack rate: 0.8%, 95% CI: 0.3, 1.9). Weekly case rates at school were not correlated with community transmission. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that transmission of COVID-19 in schools is minimal when strict mitigation measures are used, even during periods of extensive community transmission. Strict quarantine of contacts may lead to unnecessary missed school days with minimal benefit to in-school transmission.

This study was a reflection on the implementation of a transformative communication model at a school in Central Jamaica to address interruptions in communication and school operations among key stakeholders brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers sought to establish what kind of support the leaders and teacher leaders needed to improve communication among staff members and pupils in order to restore stability to the school environment. The project employed the Kurt Lewin’s change model: Unfreeze, Change, re-freeze. The study involved seven participants: the leader of the institution and six teachers who operated as teacher leaders with varying leadership portfolios. The researchers found that crisis leadership was necessary to mitigate against the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the institution which existed in the deep rural community. The researchers also found that improving leader’ and teacher leaders’ communication competencies boosted morale and encouraged normalcy in school operations. In applying the transformative communication model, the institution was entirely transferred to the TEAMS platform. A team of international experts in education and communication, that became a sustained extension of the institution, trained the leader and teacher leaders to manage the crisis and increased their communication competencies, while normal school operations continued on the platform. This project demonstrated that in times of crisis, if all stakeholders collaborate, organizational goals can be attained.

During the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19, coinciding with school year 2019-2020, house confinement measures were taken throughout Greece. Conventional face-to-face schooling presented a threat to public health. As a result the Greek Ministry of Education proceeded to suspend school operations for a while and sponsor online lessons of various shapes and forms as a temporary measure soon after. The lessons, hastily designed to address extraordinary conditions and delivered in an ad hoc manner utilizing teachers’ personal experiences and preferences to fill a gap created by house confinement, created pressures on existing infrastructures on one hand, and a corpus of diverse experiences, contradicting evidence and on occasion reports on the other. A discussion on that corpus was inevitable and took part originally among teachers of the same school either unofficially or during sessions of the teachers associations of each school. The discussion should and will expand beyond that especially in reference to cases that constitute good practices or where data were collected. To this purpose, this paper presents the case of two theoretical lessons taught at senior high-school students of the Information Applications’ Technician specialty in a Vocational Lyceum. The lessons operated surprisingly well, in comparison to similar lessons, concerning student attendance, student engagement level and continuance. Some data were collected with a questionnaire and their processing later informed discussions during reflection plenary sessions of the online class. An attempt is made to explain the divergence from the general case and reflection on results is used to draw conclusions that may benefit further attempts.

This study examines issues encountered during a school’s first year implementing science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) curriculum. The school year began with multiple changes in leadership, including the appointment of a School Operations Manager and Teacher on Special Assignment, who took on respective roles of principal and assistant principal. Tension between school and district leadership, a teacher’s arrest, and lack of adequate training for the school’s teachers contributed to the failure of the eighth-grade level’s first-quarter STEAM unit. This study delves into events leading up to—and tensions surrounding—the team’s decision to begin a new unit in the second quarter.
