Did the COVID-19 pandemic promote character growth? Studies using sequential samples suggest that collective life events can result in character growth, but their conclusions have been questioned. This study used three approaches to examine character growth during the first wave of the pandemic: perceived changes in oneself and in a close other, and a longitudinal analysis of changes. In addition, we tested whether character strengths assessed before the pandemic predicted specific instances of growth, that is, engagement in volunteering and compliance with regulations during the pandemic. German-speaking participants ( N = 366, 76.5% female, mean age: 45.33 years) who had completed an assessment of character strengths before the pandemic reported on perceived changes in character strengths, engagement in volunteering, and compliance with regulations. A subsample also completed a second assessment of character strengths. The results showed that (a) participants reported perceived changes for most character strengths in both themselves and close others, while (b) longitudinal increases were only observed for humility and prudence. Pre-pandemic character strengths predicted (c) engagement in volunteering and (d) compliance with regulations. We conclude that actual character growth was smaller than the perceived changes but that the character strengths did predict relevant behaviors related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This prospective longitudinal study examined whether repeated written narration of relational transgressions was associated with increases in empathy, humility, and compassion over 1 year. Although engagement in reflective and meaning-making processing styles has been theorized to facilitate adversarial growth existing research has been limited by methodological issues and has yet to examine whether this mechanism is associated with character trait changes over time. Participants provided ratings of trait empathy, humility, and compassion in 5 waves at 3-month intervals. In Wave 2, participants provided a written narrative describing a recent relational transgression against their romantic partner. Participants then engaged in repeated narration of recent romantic transgressions in Waves 3 through 5. The narratives were coded for redemption, positive self-event connections, and degree of personal responsibility taken. Linear growth curve models were used to examine the extent to which these narrative themes were associated with character growth. Overall, there was little consistent and robust evidence across models that narration was associated with changes in empathy, humility, and compassion. The implications for research into adversarial growth are discussed in reference to the appropriateness of operationalizing adversarial growth as character growth and the extent to which relational transgressions can facilitate adversarial growth.

Patients and their caregivers commonly report positive psychological change following the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, a phenomenon referred to as perceived growth. However, most studies have examined patient and caregiver growth as separate, parallel processes, without considering their dynamic interplay or the shared interpersonal context. Furthermore, previous research is limited by cross-sectional designs that use retrospective self-report measures to capture perceived change following cancer, rather than prospective designs to capture actual, measured changes in positive traits such as character strengths (i.e., character growth). This chapter discusses the challenges involved in examining post-traumatic growth in cancer patient populations and the advantages of incorporating a dyadic process approach as opposed to solely focusing on individual-level change. A dyadic process approach will permit examination of whether disclosure, support, empathy, and cognitive processing operate as mechanisms of character growth and will discuss the need for longitudinal data to fully examine post-traumatic growth as a dyadic outcome. To further elaborate on this dyadic approach, the authors propose an expanded theoretical model to delineate the intrapersonal and shared dyadic processes that underlie character and couple growth among cancer patients and caregivers.

Positive reappraisal is a key method for managing distressing emotions and reframing troubling circumstances into a challenge that is more easily handled or resolved. One of the main ways that people positively reframe their stressful experiences is by perceiving that they have grown or benefitted from them. This chapter provides a historical perspective on the study of perceived growth. Topics that are covered include nuances in the terminology ranging from character growth, stress-related growth, hardiness, and post-traumatic growth. In sum, the various concepts that have been used in this literature will be discussed and distinguished, as opposed to being used interchangeably. The authors also provide a discussion of directions for future research.

Why do some events lead to growth in character strengths and others do not? Past research has addressed this question using a typological approach where adversities are grouped into different types or categories (e.g., daily stressor vs. clinical trauma). This approach has practical and theoretical limitations. In this chapter, the authors propose a conceptual model that incorporates a dimensional approach to examining how and why adverse events differ in their impact on character strengths. This conceptual model identifies 10 dimensions of event characteristics (e.g., external control, negative valence). They also explore the association among these event characteristics and character growth with a focus on five central research questions: (1) Which characteristics of adverse events are generally associated with character growth? (2) Which characteristics of adverse events are generally associated with declines in character strengths? (3) Are specific characteristics of adverse events associated with growth in specific character strengths? (4) Does the perception of event characteristics change over time? (5) Is the association between adversity and character strengths bidirectional?

The year 2019 marks the heyday of superhero films in Malaysia. BoBoiboy Movie 2 was produced by Animonsta studio, and Agent Ali The Movie was produced by WAU Animation studio, with each producing their own unique superhero characters and powers. Nonetheless, the animated film industry in the superhero genre remains uncompetitive. As shown by the 17 animated films made between 1998 and 2019, only four superhero films captured the public imagination. Although animation is an emotional medium, focusing solely on the visuals in character design and storytelling narrative is insufficient. Instead, a narrative invites the audience to put themselves in the place of superheroes and experience their world through the audience’s eyes. As a result, the main objective of this article is to examine the arc of the superhero character Boboiboy in the animated film BoBoiBoiBoy Movie 2 (2019). This study’s design is qualitative in the form of descriptive analysis, and it employs the model of The Character Arc introduced by Christopher Vogler (2007) in his book The Writer’s Journey. This research shows that the character of the superhero Boboiboy’s phase of change can be seen through his actions and appearance. These transitions are shaped by two distinct worlds, the ordinary and the extraordinary. Boboiboy goes through 12 stages of internal conflict before achieving success and gaining extraordinary powers to share as a collective privilege. It is hoped that the results of this study will be used as a benchmark for character growth and characterization while also stimulating the audience’s interest.

Few studies to date have examined Indigenous characters in children’s media. Stereotyping or omission of underrepresented groups contributes to symbolic annihilation of underrepresented groups, such as Indigenous persons. Through a qualitative textual design, the researcher explored how Western-Hemisphere Indigenous masculinity was framed in five Disney animated films. While Indigenous characters were positively portrayed, the researcher found displays of stereotypes, and an absence of character growth.
