This article emerges from a collaborative research project between a religious studies professor at DePaul University and the executive director of the Chicago-based non-profit Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants (ICDI). In 2016, we forged a community partnership to explore and enhance the relationship between pedagogy, faith, and social justice. In this article, we share the results of our research on how exposure to and involvement with the work of ICDI impacts students, staff, and volunteers. Our research reveals the powerful effect that a community-engaged partnership can have not only on adult learning but also on spiritual development. Our findings suggest that faith in action may take several forms, including encounter, accompaniment, advocacy, and social justice, and that those who engage the work of ICDI may engage them in different ways. These insights will be useful for institutions, both universities and community organizations alike, in enhancing adult learning and spiritual growth.

Interfaith dialog is commonly carried out to harmonize the relationship and minimize conflicts between religious believers. This study examines how the functional structure of an interfaith community and beliefs can create harmonious interfaith relationship through an interfaith dialog held in Kudus, Central Java. This study is designed with qualitative research model by applying the phenomenological approach. The data were technically collected through interviews, observation, document studies and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Theoretically, this study used Talcott Parsons’ structural functional theory. The results showed that the Interfaith and Interbelief Communities of Pantura (TALI AKRAP) is a system in society where the religious adherents and the flow of beliefs are the integrated elements, each of which should function one another in creating a balance in society. As a system, TALI AKRAP holds four imperative functions which are simultaneously integrated in action systems, namely adaptation, goal attention, integration and learn pattern maintenance or commonly abbreviated AGIL. The existence of adaptation between religious adherents in the community aims to understand, recognize and accept one another as an effort to realize the harmony among religious believers. The goal to be achieved is a community with concern, tolerance, lives side by side and accepts differences as a gift from the God Almighty, all of which are integrated in social dialog activities between religious believers which exist for a long time and are carried out continuously.

Tolerance among religious community is not just an attitude to allow or accept others who differ from our beliefs but also to admit their existence and provide opportunities for other religious community to do everything related to their religious teachings as long as it is in accordance with the limits and does not violate applicable regulations. Tolerance can be strived for both individually and groups through interfaith community such as the Tali Akrap. Tolerance will be maximally carried out if the understanding of the concept of tolerance among religious community is well understood. The influence of religious activists can also influence the attitude of tolerance and acceptance of other different religious. The tolerance among religious community that is implemented well will create a peaceful and harmonious life in the community and maintain the unity and integrity in the national and state environment.

In the social life, the religion have two faces: conflict and peace. Conflict arises in many reasons, one of them is ethnocentric views. Peace condition comes because all of religion advocates to living in harmony.  The two phenomena were studied  in the discussion of the religious leaders in the Organization of the Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) Central Java.  Result of the workshop are: (1) to avoid conflict, do not take ethnocentric views; (2). The truth of religion is absolute in relative term; (3) the religious community must have  a principle that the different is beautiful; (4) the last but not lease, needed to form interfaith community in some areas with different religions.

In 4 case studies, Chapter 6 articulates a range of ways that interfaith families practice both religions: the largely secular home that connects to both Christian and Jewish heritage; a family that sees themselves as having Christian and Jewish heritage in the context of a shared Unitarian Universalist community and faith; a family that belongs to an intentional interfaith community, the Interfaith Family Project; and a family that belongs to both Jewish and Mormon religious communities and is educating their children in both. These case studies represent the 4 main approaches that interfaith families “doing both” have found to navigate those tensions. Each of these families has found a different approach for combining their traditions and a unique language for framing their choices, but they all do so in ways that minimize the cognitive differences between the two traditions, highlights their similarities, and creates a cohesive narrative of family identity.

Weil in the late 1930s confronted rising anti-Semitism in America as well as Europe. An advocate of world peace and disarmament, she saw the war effort as necessary to defeat Hitler. She remained close to her European cousins, who wrote her detailing Nazi persecutions, and worked assiduously to support their attempts to immigrate to America by providing affidavits, money, and sponsorships. She saved perhaps a dozen relatives, who fled Germany, although several were lost. In the camp town of Goldsboro Weil opened her home to Jewish soldiers and worked in the larger interfaith community to provide hospitality to those serving at local military bases.
