Abstract Multi-color light curves of CSS J075415.6+191052 and NW Leo are presented and the photometric solutions suggest that CSS J075415.6+191052 is a low mass ratio (q=0.178) and slightly deep contact binary (f=34.9%), while NW Leo with high mass ratio (q=0.707) and shallow degree of contact (f=2.3%). For CSS J075415.6+191052, the RI light curves show weakening around the left shoulder of secondary minimum, which indicates that there may be a dark spot on the secondary component. However, the light curves of BV bands are totally symmetric. It is unreasonable if the dark spot is caused by magnetic activity or mass transfers between two components. Therefore, the weakening of the light curves in this contact binary is caused by something else. A possible explanation is mass transferring from primary component to common convective envelope through the inner Lagrangian point, and this part of the mass, for some reason, weakens RI bands of light from secondary component. O - C analysis of NW Leo reveals a cyclic period change with a modulation period of 4.7 years, which may be caused by the light travel time effect of a third body. The positions of CSS J075415.6+191052 and NW Leo in P - J_{orb}' diagram suggest that the former is more evolved, which is in agreement with their photometric solutions. In the current stage, CSS J075415.6+191052 is dominated by the angular momentum loss theory, but NW Leo mainly follow the thermal relaxation oscillation theory.

AbstractWe review results on the optical injection of dual state InAs quantum dot-based semiconductor lasers. The two states in question are the so-called ground state and first excited state of the laser. This ability to lase from two different energy states is unique amongst semiconductor lasers and in combination with the high, intrinsic relaxation oscillation damping of the material and the novel, inherent cascade like carrier relaxation process, endows optically injected dual state quantum dot lasers with many unique dynamical properties. Particular attention is paid to fast state switching, antiphase excitability, novel information processing techniques and optothermally induced neuronal phenomena. We compare and contrast some of the physical properties of the system with other optically injected two state devices such as vertical cavity surface emitting lasers and ring lasers. Finally, we offer an outlook on the use of quantum dot material in photonic integrated circuits.

This paper proposes a numerical method for solving fractional relaxation-oscillation equations. A relaxation oscillator is a type of oscillator that is based on how a physical system returns to equilibrium after being disrupted. The primary equation of relaxation and oscillation processes is the relaxation-oscillation equation. The fractional derivatives in the relaxation-oscillation equations under consideration are defined in the Φ -Caputo sense. The numerical method relies on a novel type of operational matrix method, namely, the Φ -Haar wavelet operational matrix method. The operational matrix approach has a lower computational complexity. The proposed scheme simplifies the main problem to a set of linear algebraic equations. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed technique.

We propose an equivalent electrical circuit model to evaluate the direct modulation performance of optically injection-locked (OIL) semiconductor lasers. We modeled the equivalent circuit of the OIL laser based on alternating complex envelope representations, simulated it using the Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE), and analyzed the frequency response of the OIL laser. Although the frequency response of the OIL laser is better than that of a free-running laser, its 3-dB modulation performance is degraded by the relaxation oscillation that occurs during direct modulation of the semiconductor laser. To overcome this limitation and maintain the maximum modulation performance within the entire locking range, we also designed an electrical filter to preprocess the electrical modulation signal and compensate for the non-flat modulation output of the OIL laser. The damping ratio of the directly modulated OIL laser increased by 0.101 (280%) and its settling time decreased by >0.037 (44%) when the electrical compensation circuit was added, exhibiting a flat 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 28.79 GHz.

Abstract The asymptotic limit-cycle analysis of mathematical models for oscillating chemical reactions is presented. In this work, after a brief presentation of mathematical preliminaries applied to the biased Van der Pol oscillator, we consider a two-dimensional model of the Chlorine dioxide Iodine Malonic-Acid (CIMA) reactions and the three-dimensional and two-dimensional Oregonator models of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reactions. Explicit analytical expressions are given for the relaxation-oscillation periods of these chemical reactions that are accurate within 5% of their numerical values. In the two-dimensional CIMA and Oregonator models, we also derive critical parameter values leading to canard explosions and implosions in their associated limit cycles.
