Abstract We investigate and compare the effects of two different constraints on the geometrical properties and linking of pairs of polygons on the simple cubic lattice, using Monte Carlo methods. One constraint is to insist that the centres of mass of the two polygons are less than distance $d$ apart, and the other is to insist that the radius of gyration of the \emph{pair} of polygons is less than $R$. The second constraint results in links that are quite spherically symmetric, especially at small values of $R$, while the first constraint gives much less spherically symmetric pairs, prolate at large $d$ and becoming more oblate at smaller $d$. These effects have an influence on the observed values of the linking probability and link spectrum.

Abstract Several studies related to simplifying the modeling of pebble bed High-Temperature Reactor core (HTR) has been developed before. From some calculation on several MCNP models with a fueled pebble to dummy ratio 57:43, using a combination of several types of TRISO (TRi-structural ISOtropic particle fuel) unit and Pebble unit is modeled to achieve its first criticality. In this paper, some MCNP model that uses 27000 pebbles with a 57:43 ratio and 100% fueled pebble is created to be used on burnup calculation and to compare its k-eff and nuclide inventory. From this burnup calculation, it could be seen that SC (Simple Cubic) TRISO unit has faster calculation time followed by the HCP (Hexagonal Close Packed) TRISO unit and then the FCC (Face-Centered Cubic) TRISO unit. The BCC (Body-Centered Cubic) pebble unit had some consistent deviation from another pebble unit, and it still needs more study to know more about the reason behind it. It could be seen that if there are some dummy pebbles inside the reactor, then the deviation would be higher than if there is just fueled pebble inside the reactor. On the 57:43 ratio, the absolute average deviation of k-eff on burnup calculation is lower than 2% and 10% for nuclide inventory (mass). On 100% fueled pebble, it’s below 0.15% on k-eff absolute deviation and below 8% on nuclide inventory deviation.

The present work studied the microstructures of Cr19Fe22Co21Ni25Mo13 alloy, and tested the polarization properties in deaerated 1M nitric acid and 1M hydrochloric solutions at different temperatures. The alloy was processed by an argon atmosphere arc-melting. Results indicated that the microstructure of Cr19Fe22Co21Ni25Mo13 alloy was a dendritic one. The dendrites of Cr19Fe22Co21Ni25Mo13 alloy were an FCC structure, and the interdendrites of Cr19Fe22Co21Ni25Mo13 alloy were a eutectic structure with two phases of FCC and simple cubic (SC). The Cr19Fe22Co21Ni25Mo13 alloy had better corrosion resistance compared with commercial 304 stainless steel in both deaerated 1M HNO3 and 1M HCl solutions. The corrosion types of Cr19Fe22Co21Ni25Mo13 alloy in both of 1M HNO3 and 1M HCl solutions were uniform corrosion.

A structure that possesses a continuous pore space packed with a granular material exhibits acoustic characteristics based on the principle similar to that of a porous material. Such a structure is used in low-noise pavement and ballast track. Therefore, predicting the sound absorption characteristics of a clearance generated in a granular material from the particle diameter and the physical property of gas is useful for engineering. This article deals with two packing models, namely, the simple cubic lattice model and the hexagonal lattice model, to measure the sound absorption coefficient of the structure packed with a granular material whose particle diameter is a few mm. Furthermore, a simple and accurate theoretical analysis that uses a one-dimensional transfer matrix method, which does not require numerous parameters, was performed. Comparing experimental values, when the particle diameter of the granular material was 4 mm, the percentage of the boundary layer in the clearance was moderately larger than when the diameter was 8 mm; therefore, the effect of viscosity on it was larger, and its sound absorption coefficient peak was higher. Moreover, compared with the simple cubic lattice, the hexagonal lattice had a higher percentage of boundary layer in the clearance because of its smaller volume of pore space. Then, the influence of friction due to the viscosity on it was higher, and its sound absorption coefficient peak was higher. In addition, the theoretical values obtained by the proposed analysis method typically matched the experiment values.

AbstractIn a narrow temperature window in going from the isotropic to highly chiral orders, cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit so-called blue phases, consisting of different morphologies of long, space-filling double twisted cylinders. Those of cubic spatial symmetry have attracted considerable attention in recent years as templates for soft photonic materials. The latter often requires the creation of monodomains of predefined orientation and size, but their engineering is complicated by a lack of comprehensive understanding of how blue phases nucleate and transform into each other at a submicrometer length scale. In this work, we accomplish this by intercepting nucleation processes at intermediate stages with fast cross-linking of a stabilizing polymer matrix. We reveal using transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron small-angle X-ray diffraction, and angle-resolved microspectroscopy that the grid of double-twisted cylinders undergoes highly coordinated, diffusionless transformations. In light of our findings, the implementation of several applications is discussed, such as temperature-switchable QR codes, micro-area lasing, and fabrication of blue phase liquid crystals with large domain sizes.
