The shape and attitude (S&A) of the electrode wire are important characteristics of micro coreless motor winding. The purpose of this paper is to present the design of a robotic micro-manipulation system for micro wire carding with arbitrary S&A, which can be used as the pretreatment system for wire micro-gripper systems. The system is based on the principle of flexible carding, and uses nylon, bristle, nanometer-silk and wool as materials for the brushing micro-manipulator. The trajectory of the brushing micro-manipulator is designed, and the S&A of the electrode wires are straightened through the combined motion mode of horizontal and vertical brushing micro-manipulators. The experimental results show that the material of the brushing micro-manipulator has a great impact on the carding quality. Nanometer-silk material is more suitable for horizontal brushing micro-manipulators, and wool material is more suitable for vertical brushing micro-manipulators. The geometric dimension of the brushing micro-manipulator also affects the carding quality. When the diameter is in the range of 1 mm, the carding effect of the horizontal brushing micro-manipulator with a length of 4.9–8 mm is better. The system can realize the automatic carding of flexible electrode wires with arbitrary S&A, and it will not damage the structure of wires in the process.

Platform motions induced by waves pose a challenge to accurately predict the aerodynamic performance of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). In view of this, the power performance and wake structure of FOWTs under platform pitch, surge, and their combined motions were investigated in this paper, using the computational fluid dynamics software, STAR-CCM+, with overset meshing and rigid body motion techniques. First, the simulation cases in single and same-phase combined motions with different amplitudes and frequencies were performed. Afterward, the approach of calculating the phase difference between pitch and surge motions was proposed to investigate the influence of the combined motion with phase difference on the aerodynamic performance. Results show that the increment of amplitude and frequency augments the mean power output and aggravates the power fluctuation in single and same-phase combined motions. The intensity of power variation under combined motion with a phase difference is weakened at 0.1 Hz compared to the single motion, while enhanced at 0.2 Hz, showing a different influence law on the aerodynamic performance. In addition, this paper established the power fluctuation table based on real sea states of Shidao in China, providing a certain reference for the controller design in this sea area.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is caused by the formation of plaques in the coronary arteries and is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases. NaF-PET can be used to assess plaque composition, which could be important for therapy planning. One of the main challenges of NaF-PET is cardiac and respiratory motion which can strongly impair diagnostic accuracy. In this study, we investigated the use of a synergistic image registration approach which combined motion-resolved MR and PET data to estimate cardiac and respiratory motion. This motion estimation could then be used to improve the NaF-PET image quality. The approach was evaluated with numerical simulations and in vivo scans of patients suffering from CAD. In numerical simulations, it was shown, that combining MR and PET information can improve the accuracy of motion estimation by more than 15%. For the in vivo scans, the synergistic image registration led to an improvement in uptake visualization. This is the first study to assess the benefit of combining MR and NaF-PET for cardiac and respiratory motion estimation. Further patient evaluation is required to fully evaluate the potential of this approach. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Synergistic tomographic image reconstruction: part 1’.

The technique of superposition of motions in the space of Lagrange variables is described, which allows us to obtain the equations of combined motion by replacing the Lagrange variables of superimposed (external) motion with Euler variables of nested (internal) motion. The components of velocity and acceleration in the combined motion obtained as a result of differentiating the equations of motion in time coincide with the results of vector addition of the velocities and accelerations of the particles involved in the superimposed motions at each moment of time. Examples of motion and superposition descriptions for absolutely solid and deformable bodies with equations for the main kinematic characteristics of motion, including for robot manipulators with three independent drives, pressing with torsion, bending with tension, and cross– helical rolling, are given. For example, given the fragment of calculation of forces in the kinematic pairs shown the advantages of the description of motion in Lagrangian form for the dynamic analysis of lever mechanisms, allows to determine the required external exposure when performing the energy conservation law at any time in any part of the mechanism.

AbstractThe electroencephalogram (EEG) induced by steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) will contain background noise. Most existing research on this problem uses signal-processing methods to enhance the EEG. The purpose of this paper is to explore another method that can be used to enhance the EEG. We creatively combined motion stimuli with light-flashing stimuli and designed a paradigm in which motion and light-flashing simultaneously will stimulate with the same frequency; this is called multi-source co-frequency stimulus. To avoid the direct stimulus of light-flashing in the human eye and ensure that the composite paradigm provided adequate comfort, the light-flashing pattern was presented in a ring form and the motion stimulus was presented in the center of that ring. Our hypothesis is that when the motion and the light-flashing are simultaneously stimulated with the same frequency, the EEG they induce will be superimposed in some way, and this will enhance the EEG. The multi-source co-frequency stimulus was found to achieve a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), better accuracy, and a higher information transmission rate (ITR) than single stimulus. The experimental results showed that it is feasible to use the method proposed in this study to enhance the EEG.

Problem about motion of a reservoir with liquid with a free surface is considered based on the compensation of a force response of the liquid on reservoir walls. Such an approach is selected since usual methods of control of mechanical system motion are mostly intended for linear systems of relatively small dimension. However, models of dynamics of the combined motion of reservoirs with liquid are described with relatively high-dimensional nonlinear systems ordinary differential equations. For obtaining the mathematical model of combined motion of a reservoir with liquid with a free surface we use the Hamilton–Ostrogradskiy variational principle, for which it is possible to determine analytically all internal forces of interaction of system component parts. Namely using this algorithm, we determine the main vector of forces of the liquid pressure on reservoir walls (force response of liquid). The algorithm of the motion control of the reservoir with liquid is based on the inclusion of the compensation of the liquid force response to controlling actions, this reduces the motion of the system reservoir–liquid, where the effect of forces from oscillating liquid on the reservoir motion is eliminated. This algorithm was tested for problems of impulse and vibration disturbance of the translational motion of the system in the horizontal plain. We consider the disturbance of the system motion by a force rectangular impulse applied to the reservoir wall, the duration of the impulse is lesser than a quarter of the period of a liquid free oscillations according to the first normal mode. Amplitudes of the impulse were selected with the purpose of analysis of the behavior of the controlled system in different ranges of manifestation of nonlinearities. We state the problem to verify the accuracy of this algorithm for three ranges of manifestation of nonlinear properties in the system, namely, for the linear range (amplitudes of waves on a free surface h do not exceed 0,1 of the radius of a free surface (  <0,1R); for the weakly nonlinear range (  <0,2R) and for the strongly nonlinear range with maximum amplitudes of waves about  =0,32R. Numerical modeling enables the determination of errors of developed algorithm, which does not exceed 0,5 %, although they insignificantly increase with the increase of amplitudes of oscillations on a free surface of liquid. At the same time perturbations on a free surface of liquid for the controlled motion are always greater than for the uncontrolled motion.

The technological scheme for the purification of biogas from carbon dioxide is considered. A mathematical model obtained on the basis of the principle of minimum intensity of energy dissipation is presented, and a graph of the dependence of the ratio of the speeds of the constrained and combined motion of particles on the fraction of the liquid phase is presented. An assessment of the operation of the column in the absorption of carbon dioxide from biogas is given.

The dependence of rolling friction on velocity for various contact conditions is discussed. The principal difference between rolling and other types of relative motion (sliding and spinning) is that the points of the body in contact with the support change over time. Due to deformations, there is a small contact area and, entering into contact, the body points have a normal velocity proportional to the diameter of this area. For describing the dependence of the friction coefficient on the angular velocity in the case of “pure” rolling, a linear dependence is proposed that admits a logical explanation and experimental verification. Under the combined motion, the rolling friction retains its properties, the sliding and spinning friction acquiring the properties of viscous friction.
