Traditionally, a healthy mouth is a good indicator of good general health. Poor oral hygiene reflects the health of the oral cavity and is a risk factor for overall health. Although oral diseases like dental decay and periodontitis are prevalent, awareness of oral diseases is still limited. Oral disorders include a wide range of diseases that may not be confined to the oral anatomical structures but may be manifestations of systemic diseases. Identification of the risk factors of dental and oral diseases, including socio-economic determinants, plays a major role in the type of oral health care, and in the promotion of dental health awareness. This article reviews oral diseases in the Caribbean and aims to raise awareness of this subject while suggesting a research agenda for the region.

Abstract Background: Educational environments are considered important for strengthening students’ health status and knowledge, which is associated with good educational outcomes. It has been suggested to establish healthy universities based on a salutogenic approach—namely, health promotion. The aim of this study was to describe health-promoting resources and factors among first-semester students in higher education in healthcare and social work. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on a survey provided to all students in seven healthcare and social work programmes from six universities in southern Sweden. The survey was performed in 2018 using a self-reported, web-based questionnaire focussing on general health and well-being, lifestyle factors and three validated instruments measuring health-promoting factors and processes—the Sense of Coherence (SOC) scale, Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS) and Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ).Results: Of 2283 students, 851 completed the survey, where 742 (87.1%) were women; 722 students participated in healthcare programmes, and 129 students participated in social work programmes. Most reported good general health and well-being (88.1% and 83.7%, respectively). The total mean scores for the SOC scale, SHIS and OBQ were 59.09 (SD = 11.78), 44.04 (SD = 9.38) and 26.40 (SD = 7.07), respectively. Well-being and several health-promoting lifestyle factors were related to better general health and higher SOC, SHIS and OBQ scores. Multiple linear and logistic regressions showed that perceived well-being and no sleeping problems significantly predicted higher general health and higher SOC, SHIS and OBQ scores. Being less sedentary and non-smoking habits were significant predictors of higher SOC.Conclusions: Swedish students in higher education within the healthcare and social work sector report good general health and well-being in the first semester, as well as health-promoting resources (i.e. SOC, SHIS and OBQ), and in some aspects, a healthy lifestyle. High-intensity exercise, no sleeping problems and non-smoking seem to be of importance to both general health and health-promotive resources. This study contributes to the health promotive characteristics of students in the healthcare and social work sectors, which is of importance for planning universities with a salutogenic approach.

Introduction/Aim: Pleural effusions are rarely seen on computerized tomography (CT) or radiography (X-ray) images of the chest, in coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). When present, they usually occur late in the course of the disease; they are mostly unilateral but can also be bilateral, and are absorbed after two days. Studies have also shown that pleural effusions occur primarily in the elderly and individuals with underlying respiratory disease. The incidence of respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome, as well as the mortality rates are higher in patients with pleural effusion than in patients without it. Our aim is to report a case that is different from the most commonly described cases in available literature. Patient presentation: We present a 49-year-old, comorbidity-free COVID-19 patient, who developed pleural effusion on the 10th day of hospitalization. The pleural effusion was unilateral and did not appear on a repeat lung radiography after four days. Except an elevated platelet count, the blood count parameters were in the reference ranges, while the value of CRP was slightly elevated. The patient was discharged with a good general health status, after 16 days of hospitalization. Conclusion: This case provides insight into the course and prognosis of the COVID-19 disease that is different from what has been reported in previously published papers and shows that pleural effusions do not occur only in elderly patients with comorbidities and a severe clinical presentation of the COVID-19 infection.

Introduction: Impetiginization is defined as a surinfection of Staphylococcus aureus on a preexistent dermatosis: Observation: A 19-year-old patient in good general health was admitted to general emergency and then hospitalized in internal medicine for an abscess of the labial commissure. The anamnesis revealed a 24 hours old insect bite. An abscess of the labial commissure of 20 mm in diameter with a necrotic surroundings and associated induration was observed. After 3 days of antibiotic i.v (amoxicillin + clavulanic acid), the patient went home. By 14 days, healing was complete. Bacteriological examination detected numerous staphylococcus aureus (SA) that were sensitive to meticillin. Discussion: SA by their pathogenicity are responsible for many infections, potentially serious. For several decades, mainly in hospitals, SA have acquired resistance to penicillins A and G. Infections considered as banal could evolve into very serious necrotic infections. Conclusion: This case is unusual because of its localization and its quick evolution on a young adult. It underlines the importance of early bacteriological sampling before the introduction of probabilistic antibiotherapy in order to anticipate extremely serious necrotic infections that may lead to aesthetic and functional sequelae.

Abstract Health benefits of blue spaces have been less studied compared with other urban natural environments. As a type of blue space, beaches are also affected by this lack of evidence, despite their cultural and economic importance in lots of coastal regions all over the world. Based on secondary health data from 3192 participants of the Health Survey of Barcelona 2016, we conducted a logit regression analysis to explore the relationship between people’s general health and beach proximity from their dwelling place, controlling for several health determinants. Our main results suggested that having good general health was less likely for a 1-km increase in the linear distance to the closest beach from people’s dwelling places (OR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.87, 1.00). Moreover, the probability of having good general health was 45% higher for people living in the first 2 km from the beach (OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.01, 2.09), relative to those living >5–10 km from it. Also, these health effects were stronger for people with a low family income. These findings contribute to grow the currently small body of research related to health benefits of beach spaces. Likewise, they encourage fostering the use of these spaces for health promotion in cities, as well as protecting them and improving their accessibility and safety. Further research should lean towards the underlying causes of these health benefits linked to people’s exposure to beach spaces.

Sexual responses are some of the strongest primary rewards used in research and, arguably, in nature. Sexual response often is considered only in isolation as a reflection of good general health or relevant solely for reproduction. Yet, altered responsiveness to sexual rewards is evident in a number of affective disorders not limited to sexual difficulties. Sexual stimulation has been neglected for its potential to treat a range of general physical and mental health problems. Relative to other emotion sciences, sexual psychophysiology is underdeveloped. The chapter reviews how sexual responses are affected in general emotional disorders, then attempts to distinguish these, often unsuccessfully, from related sexual difficulties.

Introduction: Thirty percent of the muscle mass is lost between the third and eighth decades of life. Vitamin D may have different roles in different aspects of the muscle cell function. Aim: To assess the correlation between vitamin 25(OH)D levels, handgrip strength (HGS), and finger pinch strength (FPS) in elderly. Materials and methods: This was a clinical observational study. It included a total of 92 patients of 65 years and over with good general health status and 66 young healthy volunteers. They all underwent HGS and FPS measurements. Study groups were further stratified into those with a serum 25(OH)D levels higher than 30 ng/dl and those with lower than 30 ng/dl. Results: When geriatric patients were divided into two groups based on 25(OH)D levels, no statistically significant intergroup differences were found in FPS (p>0.05) while statistically significant differences were found in HGS (p<0.05). The analysis of the correlations between HGS and 25(OH)D concentrations revealed a positive, statistically significant correlation between these two parameters at r= 0.330 (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that serum vitamin 25(OH)D levels have an impact on HGS in both geriatric group and control group.

Abstract Residual cyst is consequence of a radicular cyst incomplete removal. This paper presents the case of a patient with residual cyst of unusual size located in the pre-maxilla causing large bone defect rehabilitated by titanium mesh. A 78-year-old male patient with good general health sought treatment reporting maladjustment of the upper dental prosthesis due to a volumetric increase with one year of evolution. Patient history and clinical and complementary exams led to diagnosis of residual cyst. Due to the cyst size and bone resorption, after the lesionremoval, a titanium mesh was fixed and a membrane positioned, in an attempt to reduce bone deformity and induce tissue repair to avoid functional and aesthetic sequelae. The treatment restored maxillary sinus health and provided satisfactory aesthetic contours to the patient’s face, enabling a proper prosthetic rehabilitation and proved to be a viable alternative for the treatment of similar cases. Keywords: Maxillary Sinus. Odontogenic Cysts. Surgical Mesh.

According to the act of the State Fire Service fire-fighters are obligated to perform variety of activities in the field of technical, chemical, ecological or other rescue. All these activities require mental and psychical resistance as well as good general health and physical fitness. The aim of the present study was to identify the key rescue activities. Separation of key rescue activities performed by fire-fighters was made in order to evaluate their sensorimotor abilities and to create an unified plan of practical exercises used in training phase. Method of choosing activities that should be included to the “key activities” for practical exercises at the training stage was based not only by their incidence, but also by difficulty level. On the basis of the fire-fighting operations, 39 key rescue operations were selected.
