This article addresses social legacies or “historically remaining issues”—the impacts of Mao-era policies and practices on life courses, socioeconomic statuses, living conditions, and other aspects of social life in the post-Mao era. These social legacies involve state–society interactions on policy adjustments and symbolic practices and, therefore, are tangled up with other legacies, institutional and cultural, of the Mao years. This point is illustrated in a study of the Shanghai–Xinjiang zhiqing migration program of 1963–1966, in which about 97,000 Shanghai “ zhiqing” (educated youths) were mobilized to settle in the Xinjiang Construction and Production Corps. After petitions and protests in 1979–1980, some returned to Shanghai legally, but others returned to and remained in Shanghai without documents. This article discusses how Shanghai zhiqing returnees have been petitioning and protesting to pressure the state to solve problems relating to their hukou, pensions, and healthcare, and how the state responded with repression and incremental, ad hoc policy changes, which have caused repercussions and provoked grievances. State–society interactions over the social legacies of the Shanghai–Xinjiang migration program have been constrained by related institutional and cultural legacies, including the hukou system, the status of the Xinjiang Construction and Production Corps, the state’s positive historical assessment of the Shanghai–Xinjiang program, and the zhiqing’s pride in and confusion over their identities.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, Romanian migrants have become one of the most significant national groups doing agricultural work in Spain, initially coming via a temporary migration program and later under several different modalities. However, despite their critical importance for the functioning of Europe’s largest agro-industry, the study of this long-term circular mobility is still underdeveloped in migration and agriculture literature. Thanks to extensive fieldwork carried out in the provinces of Huelva and Lleida in Spain and in the counties of Teleorman and Buzău in Romania, this paper has two main objectives: first, to identify some of the most common forms of mobility of these migrants; and second, to discuss whether this industrial agriculture, hugely dependent on migrant work, is socially sustainable. The case of Romanian migrants in Spanish agriculture will serve to show how a critical sector for the EU and for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, operates on an unsustainable model based on precariousness and exploitation.

This article analyzes the most important strategic planning documents in the field of migration policy of the Russian Federation — the Federal Migration Program (1994), the Concept for the Regulation of Migration Processes (2003), the Concept of Migration Policy for the period 2012–2025 (2012), Concept of Migration Policy for 2019–2025 (2019). Normative legal documents in the field of migration were selected as the object of research, and the principles of migration policy proclaimed by them were selected as the object of research. The aim of the study is to classify these principles and establish continuity between strategic planning documents in the field of migration. Research objectives: consider strategic planning documents; analyze the principles of migration policy proclaimed by them; classify the selected principles of migration policy into groups. As a result of the work carried out, universal principles (contained in all analyzed strategic planning documents) and particular principles (contained in only one or several strategic planning documents) were determined. Based on the analysis of these principles, both universal and particular, it is concluded that the proclaimed priorities of the policy in the field of migration ensure the competitiveness of Russia as a recipient country of migration in the world arena.

Josef Lainck, a German national emigrated to Canada in July 1927. He arrived in Quebec City and travelled west to Edmonton, Alberta where he became a burglar and shot a police officer. Lainck was arrested in November 1927 and deported to Germany in 1938, upon arrival he was arrested and interned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp until April 1945. This article will examine Lainck’s emigration to Canada, arrest and deportation to Nazi Germany. Lainck’s case is illuminating as it reveals information on deportations from Canada and the Third Reich’s return migration program and how undesirables were treated within Germany. The Third Reich’s return migration plan encouraged returnees to seek their deportations as a method of return. Canadian extradition procedures cared little for the fate of foreign nationals expatriated to the country of their birth regardless of the form of government or the turmoil that plagued the nation. This work will compare Canadian to American deportation rates as an illustration of Canada’s harsh deportation criterion. In this article, the policies and practices of immigration and deportation are discussed within a framework of insecurity as a key driver for human mobility in the first half of the 20th century.

Abstract Individual cells detach from cohesive ensembles during development and can inappropriately separate in disease. Although much is known about how cells separate from epithelia, it remains unclear how cells disperse from clusters lacking apical–basal polarity, a hallmark of advanced epithelial cancers. Here, using live imaging of the developmental migration program of Drosophila primordial germ cells (PGCs), we show that cluster dispersal is accomplished by stabilizing and orienting migratory forces. PGCs utilize a G protein coupled receptor (GPCR), Tre1, to guide front-back migratory polarity radially from the cluster toward the endoderm. Posteriorly positioned myosin-dependent contractile forces pull on cell–cell contacts until cells release. Tre1 mutant cells migrate randomly with transient enrichment of the force machinery but fail to separate, indicating a temporal contractile force threshold for detachment. E-cadherin is retained on the cell surface during cell separation and augmenting cell–cell adhesion does not impede detachment. Notably, coordinated migration improves cluster dispersal efficiency by stabilizing cell–cell interfaces and facilitating symmetric pulling. We demonstrate that guidance of inherent migratory forces is sufficient to disperse cell clusters under physiological settings and present a paradigm for how such events could occur across development and disease.

This study aims to explain the concept of policy that needs to be implemented by the government in counteracting of religious intolerance. Based on the factors of population equality and economic prosperity, the government must be regarding the socio-religious aspect of the migration program in the interior of Duri Bengkalis, Riau. In order to realize the ideals of national social development, the portrait of the process of migrating Christian Bataks’ to the interior of Duri must be an outlook for the social conflicts that occur. Highlighting the case of intolerance between Christian Bataks’ and Malay Muslim tribes Duri is important to be contextually examined through a research approach. As a literacy for developing unlimited tolerance in the frame of pluralism, it is very appropriate if this study is analyzed using the perspective of the sociology of development. The process of developing nation-building through a migration program, I take field data through qualitative research. The data source was taken directly to the informant with the snowball sampling technique. After the data were analyzed by the process of data reduction, data display, and conclusion, I found that government policy was not optimal in accommodating the migration program. There are still occur caused by the inferior of people for the meaning of pluralism. Although in general, the community has lived up to the philosophy of Pancasila, these implications are lowly in everyday life. Efforts to reduce conflicts that occur in Bengkalis, the government needs to develop a roadmap for policies on religious dialogue. Religious harmony is very important. It is impossible to realize tolerance without limits if the supporting instruments are not a priority agenda. Especially in areas prone to an inter-religious conflict which are actually caused by economic disparity and political oligarchy.Studi ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tentang konsep kebijakan yang perlu diterapkan oleh pemerintah dalam menangkal intoleransi beragama. Selain faktor pemerataan penduduk dan kesejahteraan ekonomi, penting kiranya pemerintah memperhatikan aspek sosial-keagamaan atas kasus migrasi yang terjadi di pedalaman Duri Bengkalis, Riau. Agar cita-cita pembangunan sosial secara nasional dapat terwujud, potret proses migrasi suku Batak Kristen ke pedalaman Duri harus menjadi outlook atas konflik sosial yang terjadi. Menyoroti kasus intoleransi antara suku Batak Kristen dan Muslim Melayu Duri menjadi penting untuk ditelaah secara kontekstual melalui pendekatan riset. Sebagai acuan mengembangkan toleransi tanpa batas dalam bingkai pluralisme, sangat pantas jika kajian ini, dianalisis menggunakan perspektif sosiologi pembangunan. Proses mengembangkan pembangunan bangsa melalui program migrasi, penulis mengambil data lapangan melalui penelitian kualitatif. Sumber data diambil langsung kepada informan dengan teknik snowball sampling. Setelah data dianalisis dengan proses reduksi data, display data, dan penarikan kesimpulan, penulis menemukan optimalnya kebijakan pemerintah dalam mengakomodir program migrasi. Hal utama yang menjadi pemicunya adalah masih rendahnya masyarakat memahami makna pluralisme. Walaupun secara umum masyarakat sudah menghayati falsafah Pancasila, tetapi masih rendahnya implikasi tersebut dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Upaya meredam konflik yang terjadi di Bengkalis, pemerintah perlu menyusun roadmap kebijakan tentang dialog agama. Kerukunan agama sangat penting ditegakkan. Mustahil dapat mewujudkan sikap toleransi tanpa batas jika instrumen pendukungnya bukan menjadi agenda prioritas. Terutama di daerah-daerah yang rawan konflik antar umat beragama yang sejatinya disebabkan oleh faktor kesenjangan ekonomi dan oligarki politik.
