Covalent Triazine Frameworks (CTFs) are a class of Porous Organic Polymers which attracts continuously growing interest because of their outstanding chemical and physical properties. However, the control of extended porous organic frameworks’ structures at the molecular scale for a precise adjustment of their properties has hardly been achieved so far. Here, we present a series of bipyridine-based CTFs synthesized through polycondensation, in which the sequence of specific building blocks is well controlled. The reported synthetic strategy allows to tailor the physicochemical features of the CTF materials, including nitrogen content, apparent specific surface area and opto-electronic properties. Based on a comprehensive analytic investigation, we demonstrate a direct correlation of the CTF bipyridine content with the material features such as specific surface area, bandgap, charge separation and surface wettability with water. The entirety of those parameters dictates the catalytic activity as demonstrated for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The material with the necessary balance between opto-electronic properties and highest hydrophilicity enables HER production rates of up to 7.2 mmol·h-1·g-1 under visible light irradiation and in the presence of a platinum co-catalyst.

Abstract A 1 kN-m deadweight torque standard machine is established in National Institute of Metrology, China. The torque range is 5N·m-1200 N·m. The deadweights utilized in the machine can generate the torque of 1200 N·m, 600N·m, 360N·m, 240N·m, 120N·m and 60 N·m, respectively. The torque can be applied both in clock-wise and counter clock-wise direction in sequencial loading process. The aerostatic bearing is introduced to the torque standard machine in order to eliminate the influence of friction. The symmetric V type rotor and stator are used to provide the reliable support both in axial and radial direction. The material of the lever arm is invar alloy, performing with the minimum deformation with the change of the ambient temperature. The counter torque part will make the precise adjustment to make a horizontal alignment of the lever arm. The relative standard uncertainty of the torque generated by the machine is less than 1e-5.

The co-precipitation thermodynamics of the Li+–Fe2+/Fe3+–Al3+–F−–SO42−–PO43−–H2O system at 298 K is studied, aiming to understand the precipitation characteristics. Based on the principle of simultaneous equilibrium and the mass action law, the missing Ksp values of AlF3 and FeF3 were estimated. The results of thermodynamic calculation demonstrate that Al3+ and F− in the sulfuric acid leachate could be preferentially precipitated in the form of AlPO4 and FeF3 by the precise adjustment of the final pH value. Only a small amount of P and Fe was lost by the precipitation of Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O, FePO4, and Fe(OH)3 during the purification process. Controlling the oxidation of ferrous ions effectively is of critical significance for the loss reduction of P and Fe. Precipitation experiments at different pH value indicated that the concentration of Al3+ and F− in the leachate decreased as the final pH value rose from 3.05 to 3.90. When the final pH value was around 3.75, aluminum and fluoride ion impurities could be deeply purified, and the loss rate of phosphate ions and iron ions could be reduced as much as possible. Relevant research results can provide theoretical guidance for the purification of leachate in the wet recycling process of lithium-ion batteries.

It is very important that the quantification of a forest's stock is determined efficiently and accurately, in such a way that more detailed information is desirable for the knowledge of the different multiproducts originated. However, the use of taper functions, a precise adjustment method for determining the assortments, does not foresee the appearance of defects in the stem that could disqualify the logs during the forest harvest. This study aimed to use the transition matrix method, a model traditionally used for predict the diametric structure of uneven-aged forests, to correct assortment estimates made by tapering functions, such as failures in tree processing, that provide a disqualification of the logs in the market values. Adapting the concept of the Markov Chain, for the correction of the assortment downgrade, the transition of the assortment classes can be obtained by dividing the actual volume obtained after the operation of the harvesting machine by the volume estimated by the tapering function. In this case, applying this alternative to the clear cut of a 16-year-old Pinus taeda plantation, it was possible to verify the existence of changes, mainly in assortment classes with a thin end diameter of 24 and 18 cm and presenting efficient correction in the estimates. In order to make realistic corrections to the assortment transition, probability matrices must be built for each compartment or forest site to be estimated. Divergences between processing machines or forestry operator’s qualifications can be decisive for the calibration of the model.

Conditional expression of genes and observation of phenotype remain central to biological discovery. Current methods enable either on/off or imprecisely controlled graded gene expression. We developed a 'well-tempered' controller, WTC846, for precisely adjustable, graded, growth condition independent expression of genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Controlled genes are expressed from a strong semisynthetic promoter repressed by the prokaryotic TetR, which also represses its own synthesis; with basal expression abolished by a second, 'zeroing' repressor. The autorepression loop lowers cell-to-cell variation while enabling precise adjustment of protein expression by a chemical inducer. WTC846 allelic strains in which the controller replaced the native promoters recapitulated known null phenotypes (CDC42, TPI1), exhibited novel overexpression phenotypes (IPL1), showed protein dosage-dependent growth rates and morphological phenotypes (CDC28, TOR2, PMA1 and the hitherto uncharacterized PBR1), and enabled cell cycle synchronization (CDC20). WTC846 defines an 'expression clamp' allowing protein dosage to be adjusted by the experimenter across the range of cellular protein abundances, with limited variation around the setpoint.

Abstract Leather, which is regularly tanned from whole hides of up to 5 m2, needs a constant thickness over the entire surface in order to be processed into high-quality consumer goods such as shoes, furniture and car interiors. Precise adjustment of the thickness is achieved by shaving. On an industrial scale, rotating knife rollers are used to remove chips from the flesh side of semi-finished leathers whereby adjusting the specified thickness and generating a smooth surface. Care must be taken to prevent the temperature from rising above the denaturation temperature of the leather during shaving in order to avoid any loss of quality. Beside this, temperature rise is always a sign of friction showing avoidable energy expenditure. In order to localize the source of friction during shaving, actual temperature development at the roller knife is studied. Different measuring methods are used to evaluate the temperature increase at the blade roll of the shaving machine. The finite element method is used to thermally simulate the process. Measured temperatures, the geometry of the blade roll and process data are taken into account for modelling the temperature development close to the blade edge. The obtained results enhance the understanding of temperature generating processes during machine operation and allow conclusions about potential improvements in the design of the machine and blades. Memristive devices have led to an increased interest in neuromorphic systems. However, different device requirements are needed for the multitude of computation schemes used there. While linear and time-independent conductance modulation is required for machine learning, non-linear and time-dependent properties are necessary for neurobiologically realistic learning schemes. In this context, an adaptation of the resistance switching characteristic is necessary with regard to the desired application. Recently, bi-layer oxide memristive systems have proven to be a suitable device structure for this purpose, as they combine the possibility of a tailored memristive characteristic with low power consumption and uniformity of the device performance. However, this requires technological solutions that allow for precise adjustment of layer thicknesses, defect densities in the oxide layers, and suitable area sizes of the active part of the devices. For this purpose, we have investigated the bi-layer oxide system TiN/TiOx/HfOx/Au with respect to tailored I-V non-linearity, the number of resistance states, electroforming, and operating voltages. Therefore, a 4-inch full device wafer process was used. This process allows a systematic investigation, i.e., the variation of physical device parameters across the wafer as well as a statistical evaluation of the electrical properties with regard to the variability from device to device and from cycle to cycle. For the investigation, the thickness of the HfOx layer was varied between 2 and 8 nm, and the size of the active area of devices was changed between 100 and 2,500 µm2. Furthermore, the influence of the HfOx deposition condition was investigated, which influences the conduction mechanisms from a volume-based, filamentary to an interface-based resistive switching mechanism. Our experimental results are supported by numerical simulations that show the contribution of the HfOx film in the bi-layer memristive system and guide the development of a targeting device.

Harvesting at high temperatures and bulk transport can negatively influence the quality of olives and lead to undesirable alterations in the extracted oil. Cooling the fruit in the field would be the most logical solution, but it means that the olives arrive too cold at the mill for immediate processing. In this work, the use of warm water in the washing tub to warm up the fruit before grinding instead of flash heat treatment on the paste was assessed in two experiments. In the first one, at the laboratory level, the temperature after milling was determined in three olive cultivars, previously stored at 5 or 10 °C, and then submerged at different water temperatures (25, 30, and 35 °C) for 15, 30, 45, and 60 s. In the second one, two batches of olives were cooled in the field at 5 °C and then conditioned with washing water to obtain a paste at the entrance of the pilot plant malaxer at 27 °C. The temperature of the olives was measured at five points from the discharging up to their entering, as paste, into the malaxer. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the method as the temperature of the ground olives was kept at the desired temperature (28 ± 1 °C). The trials highlight the potential for automating an even more precise adjustment of the temperature of the olives before milling once the washing tub is equipped with a safe heating system.
