Non-state actors are increasingly involved in enforcing immigration policies. Of late, there has been growing recognition that greater involvement of non-state actors has contributed to reconfiguring migration governance in a spatial sense. Scalar literature conceptualises the involvement of non-state actors as a move by immigration authorities to use actors beyond the state to enforce immigration policies. Network-inspired analysis, on the other hand, draws attention to attempts by non-state actors to form alliances in order to influence immigration policy. In this paper, we set out to show that other spatial shifts are at play in contemporary migration governance. In order to make sense of these spatial shifts, we advance a reading of migration governance which aims to show how efforts to manage migration are the result of, and result in, strategic attempts by state and non-state actors to enrol others, establish a sense of presence and build relationships of proximity and reach. We provide one example of this, involving an administrative alliance between a Swedish government agency and two intermediary actors in labour migration: employers in the information-technology industry and immigration service providers. By drawing attention to spatial shifts in migration governance such as this, new light can be shed on the ways in which the governance of migration recasts relationships between state and non-state actors.

At the centre of this book is an analysis of what Rabelais called ‘la plus grande villanie du monde’—‘the world’s greatest villainy’ (Pantagruel chs. 21–2). In this episode, Panurge enacts a vengeful trick on a Haughty Lady who spurned his advances. Chapter 8 evaluates divergent allegorical readings of the trick in relation to the episode’s farcical, scatological, and legal overtones. Since there is no judicial redress, Rabelais leaves us with an unfixed vilain et énorme cas of sorts: a situation that is morally, criminally, and aesthetically vilain; and énorme in an ever-expanding, spatial sense. Across the chapter, Panurge’s expansive villainy (panourgia) is explored in relation to his ageist–sexist tendencies, and in relation to his taste for facetious litigation (causes grasses) in the first half of Pantagruel. To these may be added his remonstrating against the scandalous ‘heretic’ Raminograbis and his cowardly, diabolical ravings (Tiers Livre chs. 21–3).

The phenomenon of simultaneous contrast of colors is examined in terms of optical explanation and practical recommendations for artists. But there is a lack of research that explores the results of the application of this contrast to the works of art. This article is dedicated to stylistic analysis of the role of simultaneous contrast in paintings and graphic works. In the first part of the research the reasons and mechanism of mutual influence of adjacent colors are examined on the basis of M. Chevreul’s research “The Law of Simultaneous Contrast of Colors” which explains the optical nature of the contrast by changes in visual perception of the light rays reflected by colored objects. The second part of the article explores the application of this theory to the stylistic analysis of painting and graphic arts. The use of different variations of simultaneous contrast and its consequences for the perception of the images were analyzed on the examples of art works of Titian, artist of J. Tintoretto’s circle, P. P. Rubens, T. Gainsborough, H. Daumier, V. van Gogh, R. Delaunay, M. Vrubel, M. Nesterov, T. Shevchenko, O. Murashko. It allowed to determine the range of artistic problems that simultaneous contrast helps to solve. This artistic device enriches the color scheme, makes it more complex and provokes vibrating, changeful color effect which can have aesthetic and meaningful value. Simultaneous contrast is widely used to balance cold and warm colors and to compensate the missing or poorly manifested component of the color scheme. It is also the instrument for emphasizing the reflexes and shadows on the depicted objects, for creating more convincing and holistic spatial sense in the image. This contrast can play a big role in concretization of the coloristic and material characteristics of different objects. The examples analyzed in this article do not comprise all the variability of simultaneous contrast, they are the basis for further extension of the research.

Abstract Although often considered a nondominant sense for spatial perception, chemosensory perception can be used to localize the source of an event and potentially help us navigate through our environment. Would blind people who lack the dominant spatial sense—vision—develop enhanced spatial chemosensation or suffer from the lack of visual calibration on spatial chemosensory perception? To investigate this question, we tested odorant localization abilities across nostrils in blind people compared to sighted controls and if the time of vision loss onset modulates those abilities. We observed that congenitally blind individuals (10 subjects) outperformed sighted (20 subjects) and late-blind subjects (10 subjects) in a birhinal localization task using mixed olfactory-trigeminal stimuli. This advantage in congenitally blind people was selective to olfactory localization but not observed for odorant detection or identification. We, therefore, showed that congenital blindness but not blindness acquired late in life is linked to enhanced localization of chemosensory stimuli across nostrils, most probably of the trigeminal component. In addition to previous studies highlighting enhanced localization abilities in auditory and tactile modalities, our current results extend such enhanced abilities to chemosensory localization.

Historical spaces have become increasingly important in the lives of some church members and to the institutional church. Yet the ritual of the trek points to something new and indicates that the spatial sense of rootedness, a connection to the LDS chain of memory that feels three-dimensional in that it is rooted not just in time but in place, has taken on a different look in the twenty-first century.

The spatial sense ability of elementary school students is still low. Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach is considered able to improve students' spatial sense abilities. This research aims to find out the increase of spatial sense of elementary school students who learned with CPA approach and conventional learning in terms of overall students as well as categories of high, medium, and low Mathematical Prior Ability (MPA). This research uses a quasi-experimental method with pretest and posttest control design in Mathematics subject with the topic of 3D geometry for 131 fifth grade elementary school students in Kotabaru District, Karawang Regency and Cipeundeuy District, Subang Regency. This research was conducted by dividing the students into two groups, namely students who received learning using CPA approach as the experimental group and students who received conventional learning as the control group. Descriptive analysis and inferential analysis results showed that there was an increase of spatial sense in students who learned with CPA approach, which was better than students who received conventional learning. Thus, learning using the CPA approach can improve and develop spatial sense abilities of elementary school students.

This paper summarizes different approaches to the meaning extension of the English preposition over and proposes a multimodal approach comprising three spatial image theories and one mental space theory in reference to an image-based view. It is concluded that the author’s proposal is a combination of Deane’s 2005 multimodal spatial representations and  2017 Kövecses’s model, in which there is an emphasis that treating the spatial configurations of a spatial marker requires different frames and when the marker denotes a non-spatial sense, there exists an activation of a metaphor layered from its frame in certain context with a specific communicative purpose to the domain of which the frame is a part and finally the activation will reach the image schema that supports the frame.

One of the important branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the engineering troops, the units of which are always present in the organization and conduct of combat operations. The servicemen of these units do a great job of fortifying combat positions, building barriers and obstacles, masking and covering military positions with mine explosive devices, arranging water crossings, helping in organizing shelters for manpower and equipment. The theory and especially the practice of military engineers show the need to improve not only theoretical knowledge, skills and practical skills, but also to have a high level of development of general and special physical qualities. Among the many studies of physical fitness of cadets of different military specialties, there is a lack of studies of engineering cadets. The research carried out earlier concerned mainly the operator specialties of the engineering troops. Military mechanical engineers and command personnel have not been investigated at all. The purpose and objectives of the research are aimed at finding ways to improve the level of physical and psychophysiological readiness of cadets of the Higher Educational Institutions of Higher Education - future specialists of the engineering profile and determining the influence of the author's program of physical training on their professional readiness. The research methods used included theoretical methods (analysis and generalization of literary sources), pedagogical (observation, testing, experiment), methods of mathematical statistics for processing experimental data and assessing reliability. During the academic year, 60 cadets of the National Academy of Ground Forces (mechanical engineers and commander engineers) took part in the study, divided into experimental and control groups by the method of paired comparisons. The experimental group performed a specially developed physical training program with the inclusion of applied exercises. As a result of one-year training following the results of control tests, cadets of the experimental group have significantly better indicators of psychophysiological, physical (especially strength) and professional training than cadets of the control group at the level of p <0.05. Conclusions. It has been determined that for mechanical engineers and commanders for their professional activities, good strength training is important. Sense of temporal, power and spatial parameters in all subjects is approximately at the same level. EG cadets significantly improved the results of physical and psychophysiological fitness. It was found that the existing program of physical training at VVUZ does not sufficiently contribute to the high-quality special training of engineering cadets. The proposed content of exercises and the scheme of distribution of loads for a week and a month can be used to develop programs for special physical training for specific engineering specialties. Key words: military engineers, special physical training, temporary, power, spatial sense.
