Exclusive to the Neotropical region, leaf cutter ants are considered agricultural pests, although they can also have a positive effect on plants. In Mendoza vineyards, vegetal biodiversity is minimal, therefore they cut off this plant as a feeding resource. Acromyrmex lobicornis Emery it is mostly nocturnal and forages according to temperature. Foraging and maintenance activity was measured monthly in 14 colonies, throughout a full day at fourhour intervals, from October 2019 to March 2020. Acromyrmex lobicornis showed different seasonal patterns of foraging activity. Foraging intensity was highest throughout January and February, intermediate during December, and lowest in October and November. A bimodal feeding pattern was observed, foraging both day and night avoiding the hottest hours. The maximum collection of fragments was observed in the range of 10 and 19 °C, less between 20 - 39 °C, minimum between 40 - 49 °C and null between 0 - 9 °C. The nest - maintenance activity was maximum between 20 - 29 °C, less between 30 - 39 ° C, minimum between 40 - 49 °C and null between 0 - 20 °C.

Mandibles of ants can be considered as one of the most vital tools for the survival and success of their colonies since these are extensively utilised for defence, nest maintenance and foraging activities. We hypothesised that mandibular design is strongly dependent on the respective ecological niche and foraging habit of an ant species. In the present study, we compared the external morphology and zinc content in the mandibles of four species of ants by using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The ant mandible morphology varied significantly in accordance with their species-specific foraging and nesting strategies. The sickle-shaped mandibles of the strongly predaceous, Oecophylla smaragdina worker ants were characterised by a large number of pointed teeth which would be of immense utility for subduing the prey, while the shovel-shaped, highly sclerotized mandibles of Cataglyphis longipedem ants appear to be adaptations for the solitary scavenging habit and nest maintenance in arid habitats. The large-sized mandibles of Camponotus compressus ants and the stout mandibles of the predatory, Tetraponera rufonigra forager ants, have apparently evolved for collection of sugary secretions by the former and for the solitary foraging and arboreal nesting habit of the latter. The mandibular zinc content was highest in T. rufonigra ants and the lowest in the mandibles of the sugar-loving Cm. compressus ants. The diversity in the arrangement of bristles and the type of mandibular concavities, have also evolved accordingly. Thus, this study might prove to be instrumental in evaluating the various physical mechanisms involved in the evolution of insect mandibles for their defined function.

AbstractMany vertebrates exhibit a diel activity, steered by light–dark cycle. However, some colonial waterbirds, in that several species of gulls, are active not only in day hours but also at night. In this study, we aimed to investigate 24 h cycle of black-headed gulls (BHG) Chroicocephalus ridibundus activity with focus on sleep behaviour. We expected that 24 h patterns of activity differ between colonies located in various habitats, and within a colony between nests located in the centre vs at the edge. We studied behaviour based on 9600 of 30 s videos from camera-traps taken in six colonies and data from 10 GPS-tracked individuals from one colony recorded during incubation. BHGs stayed active on average during 48.1% of a night, mainly spent on passive and active nest defence, and on nest maintenance. BHGs spent similar time on these activities in day hours. Individuals breeding in the colony centre slept at night longer than those at its edge. BHGs stayed active during on average 76.5% of daytime. In two urban colonies with the highest nest densities and highest level of light pollution birds slept less during the day than in other studied colonies (three rural and one urban) characterized by lower densities and light intensity after sunset near the colony. Knowledge of nocturnal behaviour is crucial to comprehend 24 h activity patterns of an organism, especially to understand flexibility of behaviour crucial for restoration, like sleep.

As a critical stage in the life cycle of ant colonies, nest establishment depends on external and internal factors. This study investigates the effect of the number of queens on queen and worker behavior during nest establishment in invasive Argentine ants (Linepitema humile) and native Mediterranean Tapinoma nigerrimum. We set up experimental colonies with the same number of workers but with one or six queens. At different time points, we recorded the positions of queens and workers inside and outside the nest. Our results highlight the influence of the number of queens on the position of queens and workers with between-species differences. Queens of both species entered the nests more quickly when there were six queens. During nest establishment, more workers were inside nests with six queens for both species, with this effect being greater for T. nigerrimum. Once nests were established, fewer workers of both species were engaged in nest maintenance and feeding in nests with six queens; T. nigerrimum had fewer workers engaged in patrolling. These results suggest that the number of queens is a key factor driving queen and worker behavior during and after nest establishment with different species responses.

This study was undertaken to create an Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus; ABB) ethogram during hibernation and to describe the time budget of hibernating behaviours in ABB. Seven captive adult ABB were included in the study and began hibernation between October and December. Data were collected for three consecutive years (2013–2015) during ABB hibernation (total 169 days) using closed-circuit television. During the study, we observed 21 distinct behaviours in hibernating ABB (4 least active and 17 active behaviours). Five bears started hibernation less than seven days after feeding cessation, and by the end of one week, all bears hibernated. The most commonly observed behaviour was “sleep curling inside nest”, and “nest maintenance” was the second most common behaviour. Among the active behaviours, “sitting in the nest”, “change stance”, “drinking and eating” were mostly shown as documented during the observation times. Our results provide new insights into the hibernating behaviours of ABB.

Algorithms used in networking, operation research and optimization can be created using bio-inspired swarm behaviors, but it is difficult to mimic swarm behaviors that generalize through diverse environments. State-machine-based artificial collective behaviors evolved by standard Grammatical Evolution (GE) provide promise for general swarm behaviors but may not scale to large problems. This paper introduces an algorithm that evolves problem-specific swarm behaviors by combining multi-agent grammatical evolution and Behavior Trees (BTs). We present a BT-based BNF grammar, supported by different fitness function types, which overcomes some of the limitations in using GEs to evolve swarm behavior. Given human-provided, problem-specific fitness-functions, the learned BT programs encode individual agent behaviors that produce desired swarm behaviors. We empirically verify the algorithm's effectiveness on three different problems: single-source foraging, collective transport, and nest maintenance. Agent diversity is key for the evolved behaviors to outperform hand-coded solutions in each task.

Birds have many kinds of internal and external parasites, including viruses, bacteria and fungi, as well as protozoa, helminths and arthropods. Because parasites have negative effects on host fitness, selection favours the evolution of anti-parasite defences, many of which involve behaviour. We provide a brief review of anti-parasite behaviours in birds, divided into five major categories: (i) body maintenance, (ii) nest maintenance, (iii) avoidance of parasitized prey, (iv) migration and (v) tolerance. We evaluate the adaptive significance of the different behaviours and note cases in which additional research is particularly needed. We briefly consider the interaction of different behaviours, such as sunning and preening, and how behavioural defences may interact with other forms of defence, such as immune responses. We conclude by suggesting some general questions that need to be addressed concerning the nature of anti-parasite behaviour in birds. Sociality increases exposure to pathogens. Therefore, social insects have developed a wide range of behavioural defences, known as ‘social immunity’. However, the benefits of these behaviours in terms of colony survival have been scarcely investigated. We tested the survival advantage of prophylaxis, i.e. corpse removal, in ants. Over 50 days, we compared the survival of ants in colonies that were free to remove corpses with those that were restricted in their corpse removal. From Day 8 onwards, the survival of adult workers was significantly higher in colonies that were allowed to remove corpses normally. Overall, larvae survived better than adults, but were slightly affected by the presence of corpses in the nest. When removal was restricted, ants removed as many corpses as they could and moved the remaining corpses away from brood, typically to the nest corners. These results show the importance of nest maintenance and prophylactic behaviour in social insects.
