The practice of abdominal massage dates to years ago and associated with foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality when undertaken by untrained traditional birth attendants in our setting. We present a 30-year old G3P2+0 with uterine rupture and intra-uterine foetal death following abdominal massage. She was resuscitated and had emergency exploratory laparotomy and repair of uterine rupture.

To compare the effects of pelvic floor muscle exercise and abdominal muscle training, breathing exercises and abdominal massage in children with functional constipation. Functional constipation is one the most common gastrointestinal condition in pediatrics practice with an estimation prevalence ranging from 0.7% to 29.6%. It has a multifactorial pathophysiology mainly consisting of stool with holding and delayed colonic transit.30 subjects who met theRome-III criteriafor pediatric functional constipationwere randomly divided into 2 groups. Group-A was trained with pelvic floor muscle exercise along with squat walking for 5 min under supervision of parents. Exercise duration was increased 5 min per week, for two consecutive weeks and remained the same for the next six weeks and Kegels was performed for 10 seconds. Group-B was given isometric training of the abdominal muscle which was carried out in two ways. The patient was either lying down in a left lateral decubitus position with the hip and knee flexed at 90° with two series of eight contractions and relaxations until the third week and was then increased to two series of 12 contractions and relaxations for 6 weeks. In the sitting or lying down method, training began with one series of three contractions and relaxations lasting 10 s which was increased to five repetitions in the third week until the sixth week along with abdomen tuck-in exercise. Diaphragmatic breathing and abdominal massage was given to both groups in common. The intervention of the study was about 8 weeks. Results of statistical analysis showed that both Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises and Abdominal Muscle Training are effective in treating functional constipation among children. However pelvic floor muscle exercise was better than abdominal muscle training on the basis of Wexner Construction Scoring System

Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of abdominal massage with and without Salvia officinalis on nausea and vomiting in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods. In this randomized clinical trial, 60 patients undergoing chemotherapy were placed in one of two intervention groups or in a control group. Abdominal massage with and without Salvia officinalis was performed for 15 minutes twice a day for 3 consecutive days by the patient’s companion. The rate of nausea and vomiting was measured with a Visual Analog Scale. Results. Findings showed that immediately after the intervention, the mean score of nausea in abdominal massage with Salvia officinalis group was lower than that of the control group. The mean score of nausea was not different between abdominal massage and control groups. One week after the intervention, the mean score of nausea was not different among the three groups. In addition, the frequency of vomiting was not different among the three groups. Conclusion. Abdominal massage with/without Salvia officinalis as a complementary medicine has not considerable effect on reducing nausea and vomiting in patient with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. More studies are needed to achieve better and more accurate results.

This study was a randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the effects of acupressure and abdominal massage on constipation development for patients with TKA. The patients were randomly assigned to each group: control group ( n = 31), acupressure group ( n = 30), and abdominal massage group ( n = 30). The finding showed that the severity of constipation and straining stool consistency of the groups in which acupressure and abdominal massage was applied are significantly better than the control group ( p < .05). When the first defecation times of the groups are analyzed, it is seen that the patients to whom acupressure and abdominal massage are applied defecate significantly earlier than the control group ( p < .05). It has been concluded that safe non-invasive acupressure and abdominal massage that can be easily applied by health professions, healthy individuals, and patients is effective on patients with total knee arthroplasty for the prevention of constipation.

The chondrichthyan fishes, which comprise sharks, rays, and chimaeras, are one of the most threatened groups of vertebrates on the planet. Given this situation, an additional strategy for the protection of these species could be the ex situ conservation projects developed in public aquaria and research centers. Nevertheless, to increase sustainability and to develop properly in situ reintroduction strategies, captive breeding techniques, such as sperm extraction and artificial insemination, should be developed. These techniques are commonly used in other threatened species and could be also used in chondrichthyans. However, the different reproductive morphologies found in this group can complicate both processes. Therefore, a comparison of the reproductive anatomy of eight distinct chondrichthyans, with an emphasis on those important differences when performing sperm extraction or artificial insemination, is carried out herein. Sharks and chimaeras belonging to the Scyliorhinidae, Carcharhinidae, Centrophoridae, Etmopteridae, Hexanchidae, and Chimaeridae families were obtained from commercial fisheries, public aquaria, and stranding events. In addition, the process of obtaining viable sperm samples through cannulation, abdominal massage, and oviducal gland extraction is described in detail for both living and dead animals.

Constipation is a problem that often occurs in critically ill patients admitted to the ICU. The results showed that abdominal massage was used as a complementary therapy to prevent constipation and facilitate and expedite expenditure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of abdominal massage on the pattern of defecation of patients treated in the ICU room at Panti Rapih Hospital, Yogyakarta. This study uses a post-test only non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental research design. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, namely the sample must meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria that have been determined by the researcher. The number of samples was 36 patients, namely in the intervention group (n=18) and the control group (n=18). The results showed that the average score of the pattern of defecation in the intervention group (1.33) was higher than the control group (0.67). The results of statistical tests using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test showed a p-value of 0.025 (p<0.05), so it can be ascertained that there is an effect of abdominal massage on the pattern of defecation in patients treated in the ICU room at Panti Rapih Hospital, Yogyakarta. Complementary therapy with abdominal massage techniques can be a method to overcome the problem of constipation in patients treated in the ICU.
