Motile cilia are hair-like cell extensions present in multiple organs of the body. How cilia coordinate their regular beat in multiciliated epithelia to efficiently displace fluids remains elusive. Here, we propose the zebrafish nose as an accessible model system to study ciliary dynamics, due to its conserved properties with other ciliated tissues and its high availability for non-invasive imaging. We reveal that cilia are locally synchronized, and that the size of local synchronization domains increases with the viscosity of the surrounding medium. Despite this merely local synchronization, we observe global patterns of traveling metachronal waves across the multiciliated epithelium. Intriguingly, these global wave direction patterns are conserved across individual fish, but different for left and right nose, revealing a chiral asymmetry of metachronal coordination. In conclusion, we show that local synchronization together with tissue-scale cilia alignment shape global wave patterns in multiciliated epithelia.

Abstract We show that the rotation of the QCD axion field, aided by B−L violation from supersymmetric R-parity violating couplings, can yield the observed baryon abundance. Strong sphaleron processes transfer the angular momentum of the axion field into a quark chiral asymmetry, which R-parity violating couplings convert to the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We focus on the case of dimensionless R-parity violating couplings with textures motivated by grand unified theories and comment on more general scenarios. The axion decay constant and mass spectrum of supersymmetric particles are constrained by Big Bang nucleosynthesis, proton decay from the R-parity violation, and successful thermalization of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field. Axion dark matter may be produced by the axion rotation via the kinetic misalignment mechanism for axion decay constants below 1010 GeV, or by the conventional misalignment mechanism for 1011-12 GeV. The viable parameter region can be probed by proton decay and axion searches. This scenario may also have connections with collider experiments, including searches for long-lived particles, and observations of gravitational waves.

The origin and potential role of chiral asymmetry remain one of the most exciting issues in biology. In this paper we review the chirality of biological macromolecules, starting at the level of single molecules and continuing to the level of supramolecular assemblies. We discuss the physical and chemical consequences of the presence of chirality and their role in the self-organization and formation of structural hierarchies in cells. Homochirality may serve as an essential factor that invokes mechanisms required to control the formation of discrete structural hierarchies in macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies. Symmetry is of fundamental importance not only for all molecular biology as a systemic factor of its organization but also for pharmacology, as well as a systemic factor of drug stereospecificity.

AbstractOptical spectroscopy can be used to quickly characterise the structural properties of individual molecules. However, it cannot be applied to biological assemblies because light is generally blind to the spatial distribution of the component molecules. This insensitivity arises from the mismatch in length scales between the assemblies (a few tens of nm) and the wavelength of light required to excite chromophores (≥150 nm). Consequently, with conventional spectroscopy, ordered assemblies, such as the icosahedral capsids of viruses, appear to be indistinguishable isotropic spherical objects. This limits potential routes to rapid high-throughput portable detection appropriate for point-of-care diagnostics. Here, we demonstrate that chiral electromagnetic (EM) near fields, which have both enhanced chiral asymmetry (referred to as superchirality) and subwavelength spatial localisation (∼10 nm), can detect the icosahedral structure of virus capsids. Thus, they can detect both the presence and relative orientation of a bound virus capsid. To illustrate the potential uses of the exquisite structural sensitivity of subwavelength superchiral fields, we have used them to successfully detect virus particles in the complex milieu of blood serum.

The origin of chiral asymmetry in biology has attracted the attention of the research community throughout the years. In this paper we discuss the role of chirality and chirality sign alternation (L–D–L–D in proteins and D–L–D–L in DNA) in promoting self-organization in biology, starting at the level of single molecules and continuing to the level of supramolecular assemblies. In addition, we also discuss chiral assemblies in solutions of homochiral organic molecules. Sign-alternating chiral hierarchies created by proteins and nucleic acids are suggested to create the structural basis for the existence of selected mechanical degrees of freedom required for conformational dynamics in enzymes and macromolecular machines.
